The Pilot Just My Size 1985-86 Argenta-Oreana High School Argenta, Illinois Sizing Up the Situation Just my Size? What does “Just My Size have to do with THE PILOT or AOHS? What do you mean 'Just My Size?” Back at the beginning of the school year when we, the yearbook staff, started to plan the book, we looked for a theme that said what Argenta-Oreana is. What we found when we started looking around was that everything about our school IS just our size. We're not too big and not too small. We have lots of the same advantages and opportunities that large schools have, and we have the closeness of a small school. It was really ironic when we found out later in the school year about the proposed consolidation! When Lt. Gov. Ryan came to visit our school, we hope that we convinced him that Argenta-Oreana High School IS 'Just My Size!! TABLE OF CONTENTS Staff .... Opening 3 Dedication Late last summer a man who is loved by everyone at AOHS, Mr. Michael Schmitz, quit working at AOHS to take a job as Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools for Macon County. Throughout his career in our school district Mr. Schmitz has been everything from coach to superintendent! Besides his various other titles, Mr. Schmitz has been (and still is) an AOHS superfan!! He spends many hours cheering on all of our teams, in good times and in bad. He supports all of our students and faculty in everything that they do. For example, for many years he has supported THE PILOT and its staff by buying an ad in the yearbook. He has even subjected himself to many forms of torture to ensure that his ad was unique. (This year is no exception!) Even walking down the halls with Mr. Schmitz around is an experience! Run- ning into him face to knee, you always Find him smiling and kidding. Even now he still hangs around playing basketball with some of the faculty in the wee hours of the morning and STILL Finds time to throw out a Good morning. We have all been really fortunate to have Mr. Schmitz as our friend and wish him great luck in the future. 1. Mr. Schmitz, semi-serious for once! 2. A natural Mr. Schmitz pose. 3. As he himself puts it, You can hardly go anywhere without running into someone you've had. He has been teaching at A-OHS longer than anyone else here. From the beginning of his career in 1954, Mr. Kimler has been at our school. We all know him as the American history teacher, but over the years he has taught several other courses from English and business to world history. Another of Mr. Kimler's outstanding accomplishments is our school's student council. He has served as advisor since 1959. It’s been rumored that Mr. Kimler lives at the high school because of the many long evenings he has spent counting money from the cage profits, helping plan dances, homecoming parades, etc! All of these things that he does, though, have been summed up by yearbook advisor, Mrs. Parks. He does it because he really likes helping kids! Well, Mr. Kimler, thanks for 32 years of dedication so far — we look forward to many more. MR. JIM MOODY Social Science MRS. BERTHA PARKS Business Education MR. MOODY COMMENTS ON OUR SIZE I feel both small schools and large schools have advantages and disadvantages which make both desirable places to teach. I grew up in a large city and at- tended large schools. I like the change of atmosphere. There seems to be more people con- tact at Argenta-Oreana. Our school seems to be just his size! In the past he s been everything from an insurance agent to the chairman of the Macon Coun- ty Board. Not only has he braved this year, Cheery Coke in hand, as current events and social studies teacher, but he also risked his skin and sanity as a chaperone on the senior trip. Nearly everyone participated in spirit week. Monday started the excitement with hat and shades day. The variety of hats worn ranged from a tiny, flowered hat with fruit on it to a hugh orange cowboy hat. Tuesday, 50's day, saw a flurry of ponytails, rolled- up pants, and bobby socks, and ended with some smashing volleyball games won by the juniors. Wednesday was celebrity day and guess who dressed up as Louis and Gilbert from Revenge of the Nerds'? That's right, Mike Parker and Steve Gensler! And who else but Kenny Burns would come as Mary Lou Retton, decked out in leotards and tights? The mighty seniors won the pow- der puff football, and tug-o-war was won by??? (It was a bit confusing!) Thursday was beach bum day, bringing some exotic costumes. Inflatable rafts were dragged from class to class, beach balls and frisbies flew through the air during lunch, and a couple of guys surfed down the bleacher steps. In the afternoon we had the obstacle course. Doug Boyd had more than a little trouble getting through that! Follow- ing that was the amoeba race with the juniors losing hands down. Spirits soared Friday as students cheered wildly for the Bombers at a rollicking pep assembly. Each class performed a skit. The best skit by the seniors was We are the World” with each person dressed as a different singer. That evening, after the homecoming parade, the excitement peaked as the Bombers played Tuscola, beating them 14-8. Jeff Watson made the winning touchdown. The coronation and dance Saturday night was a perfect ending to a perfect week. Jason Kary and Mindy Haynes were crowned King and Queen and then everyone danced the night away to the band EFX”! Give up? I’ll tell you: every single one of them! It was hilarious when all the freshmen guys dressed as girls (on freshman initiation day). The real girls dressed as babies and dragged teddy bears, pacifiers, and bottles from class to class. At the end of the day the freshmen were thoroughly humiliated (we hope) as they were made to push matchbox cars across the gym floor with their noses. Then Missy Punches in her frilly pajamas was awarded The Cutest Baby, Doug Conway was crowned Miss Freshman, and Tina Middleton and Brian Steele won the Most Pigtails” award. Each chose a senior and threw a pie in his her face. Doug picked Tina Lewis and went straight for her hair! Missy picked Pat German, Tina picked her sister Christy who usually enjoys being a senior, and Brian picked Terry Neal who was really thrilled about the whole thing! The initiation of the freshmen completed when they raised their right hands and pledged their allegiance to the seniors: We, the Freshmen Frogs, do hereby solomnly swear to love, obey, and respect each and every senior. Our loyalty to the mighty seniors will last all of our days at AOHS. We promise to grant their every wish and to bow to their every command. If I, a Freshman Frog, should in any way break this God-given pledge, I shall live in sorrow and shame the rest of my high school life. I wish I could say the freshmen have been meek and docile ever since, but unfortunately ... 20 Prom and Post Prom P rom . . . The evening of May 2, 1986, couples began showing up at some of the area’s finest restaurants, the girls beautiful in swirls of lace, silk, and flowers, the guy very suave and debonnaire in their tuxes. Around eight, these beautiful people began to appear at Mont Claire in Decatur. There the dance room was decorated in blue and silver with the appropriate theme This could be the night! The dance was great and no one sat for long! People were spotted doing The Bird and The Superbowl Shuffle.” Then at 10:00 the dancing stopped as Duke Shane Cole and Duchess Heather Taylor crowned the prom king and queen — Seniors Jason Kary and Karen Keagle. When the coronation was over, the King and Queen started the dancing again with a slow dance, and everyone joined in. And Rost Prom: After an evening of being beautiful, everyone hurried home to change into something less glam- orous and rushed to be back at Spare Time lanes by midnight. From 12:00 to 4:00 a.m. people really had a good time, bowling, watching videos and cramming in more food! As soon as the doors opened though, the crowd began to head out, ei- ther for some breakfast or much needed sleep be- fore sunrise! It was a great evening! 1. Prom and Post Prom 21 22 Senior Trip Fun! That’s what the Senior Class Trip was all about. We started the good times on Sun- day, April 20. at 10:00 in the morning as all 43 of us seniors and eight chaperones jumped on our unforgettable Trailways Bus with Al, our driver, and embarked on the longest bus ride of our lives. The bus trip took us about 24 hours including pit stops, waits at 2:00 in the morning in bus stations (have you ever seen the weird people in bus stations in Atlanta. Georgia, at 2 in the morning?), and bus breakdowns in the middle of nowhere at 3 in the morning. We ar- rived at Wet N' Wild at 10:00 on the 21st, tired and fuzzy'' but excited. Wet N' Wild was very wet and exceedingly wild. There we splashed in the wave pool, played volleyball, buried Ja- son K. in the sand, lost Julie H. on the Mach 3, and lost our minds, stomachs, and essential parts of our swimming attire, as Robin F. re- members. on 'Der Stuka. It was like being pushed off a cliff feet First, exclaimed Becky B. It was awful! On the 22nd it was off to Walt Disney World. There we encountered Space Mountain, the roller coaster that rollered and coastered in pitch dark. Cinderella's Castle, Pluto, and all sorts of make-believe wonders. We climbed around the Swiss Family Robin- son's Tree House, shackled each other in the stocks, rode the carousel, and took pictures of guys. The next day we rose and shined, some resembling tomatoes, and went to Epcot Cen- ter. Epcot was very interesting and had a lot of really wow exhibits. We went globe-trotting, visiting countries from Morocco to China to France, made music, danced with Pluto, and saw bllpy” water jump across the walkways. The last two days wc soaked up rays on Day- tona Beach. The brave souls rode waves, while others ate. shopped, or just relaxed. We played frisbee and some hacky-sack and, of course, looked for shells to take home as souvenirs. We forgot about the fact that the tide does come in and found our clothes, purses, radios, and cameras drenched and sandy by a sudden wave. We left the beach for home on April 25 after paying $1.00 for a shower, 50c for a towel, and 10c for soap. On the 26ch wc arrived in the school parking lot. sandy and tired, but not nearly ready to be back. We slowly unloaded our stuff, calling home to surprised parents who expected us much later, and parted never to forget Mr. Bartges and his red flowered shorts. Mr. Sapp and his sunburn. You're never sure whether to cry or to be happy. We re leaving some things behind but taking a lot of memories into the future. But while it lasts — how sweet it is! Webster defines senior as superior, a person of higher rank or standing. As a senior it is your right and duty to live up to this definition. One of the many services performed by seniors is keeping the freshmen in line. They also generously give of their time as teacher’s aides and office helpers. But after a year of being such wonderful people, seniors develop a rare and contagious disease — senioritis. Relief is found temporarily in the form of the senior trip. Unfortunately, the final cure is sad but inevitable — graduation. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Mi- chelle Williams. From here on. it's smooth sailing! (Huh!) Juniors, as befits their new status, have a bigger choice of classes than before. Not only does their selection of classes here at AOHS grow bigger, but they also have the option of attending vocational classes at the Decatur Vocational Center. Although they have greater freedom of choice, every junior has to make it through Mr. Kimler’s constitution test!! As well as dealing with theoir new and improved classes, a lot of juniors spend extra time sweating out the SAT and ACT tests. College decisions and acceptance looms in the not-too-distant future and the SAT and ACT tests are often the hardest part. Being a junior isn't all work and no play. For the first time, they're allowed to go to prom and post prom. (The seniors are generous enough to let them pay for it. of course!) The girls spend hours upon hours searching for just the right dress, while the guys spend their time figuring out how to pay for the evening and finding a tie and cumberbund to match their girlfriend's dress. But the greatest thing about being a junior is knowing that it's only one more year until they're seniors. Travis Elliott. President; Doug Boyd. You wait patiently for your chance to slip behind the wheel of the brand new. silver Buick Skylark, buckle up. and cruise around the countryside. Unfortunately, you can’t fool many people into thinking that you're a suave, sophisticated, experienced driver when your car is plastered with neon yellow Student driver stickers, and Mr. Roberts or Mr. Cook is sitting in the front seat with you, a foot poised over the extra set of brakes. As sophomore Steve Kuhn says. I was kind of nervous at first. but after a while it becomes old hat. After you’ve earned your white and blue cards, it's time to head over to the driver's license examina- tion station for the real test. This ordeal has often come close to causing nervous breakdowns, for both the examiner and the student. Tin team was nothing short of spectacular. They started out their 1985 season with a stunning, long-awaited victor) over rival Maroa-Forsyth. Beating Maroa was the highlight of the season for senior defensive end David Spent as well as the rest of the seniors. The Bombers followed their triumph over Maroa with defeats of Warrensburgh-Latham. Monticello, and Tuscola. At Casey, the Bombers held the Warriors to their lowest scoring this year. Losing to Casey was the worst part for senior fullback Jeff Evans. The Bombers went on to defeat Milford and Leroy, finishing the regula season with a 6-3 record. As for practices, well, practices are practices, and practice the Bombers did. The worst part of practice was running dummy O’. said senior halfback and linebacker Jason Kary. All of those grueling practices paid off for the Bombers, making them well worth the effort. This team had to overcome a lot of adversity. said Coach Saunches. There were only five seniors, the team had won only two games in the past three years, and they had to play their first game against a team that w ranked in the state. But this team had something special, something that wouldn’t let them give in to the past. T1 had the right combinatoion of inexperience and junior senior leadership. This combination worked and earn the Bombers all the way to the state play-offs. For Coach Saunches. and perhaps the other members of the ' Bomber football team. The worst part of the season was that it had to end. VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM Front Row: Greg Skelton, Dusty Kippenhan. Brian Thompson. Brad Spent. St. Teresa later became a contender for this year’s State Champion- ship. The team also beat Maroa-Forsyth to place 3rd in the Macon County Tournament. The Bombers had their share of hard times this year, as several team members dropped out and various other things, but those who stayed on worked hard and did their best to play as a team instead as individuals. After earlier controversies, coming together as a team” was the most memorable part of the season for Jr. Doug Boyd. Karin Nichoils and Jodi Schoen show their pearly whites. The Lady Bombers' volleyball team had a pretty steady season this year, ending with a record of JO- 15. They finished fourth in both the Macon County Tourney and the Niantic Invitational. The team had several outstanding members this year. Seniors Karin Nichoils and Renee Budde fin- ished out their last year of high school volleyball with the honor of being co-captains and co-most valuable players. Both Karin and Renee broke school records, and Karin made the Macon County Volleyball Team. Jodi Schoen. another senior, was awarded Most Hustle, although she was surprised because, as she said. 1 didn't know such an award existed! Some juniors on the team were also honored. Stacey Bevins won the Serving Percentage award by serving 92 percent, and Suzette Shafer won the Most Improved Player award. One reason Suzette deserved her award at the end of the year was that she finally learned to stay away from the ropes. She says that the most memorable part of her season was when 1 hung myself from the volleyball net ropes. Mrs. Fitz. never let me forget that incident. The players weren't the only ones who accom- plished something this season. Volleyball coach Mrs. Fitzgerald and the team succeeded in beating Maroa twice. Mrs. Fitzgerald especially enjoyed those victo- ries because her sister coaches the Maroa team! Over- all, the Lady Bombers had a season to remember. 74 Volleyball 1. The team played well, worked hard, and had a good time in both practice and during games, and they received a lot of support from the students and the community. Several new records were set this year by varsity player Karin Nicholls. Karin set all-time Girl’s A-O career scoring marks of 2,200 points and 1,113 rebounds. She also led the team in field goal and free throw percentages steals, and rebounds (this season). Half of the girls on the team are graduating at the end of this year, but the team has several talented underclassmen who helped the team to its 16 and 10 record, and who are waiting patiently for their chance to shine. The 1985 Bomber wrestling season was a very productive year. The Bombers finished the season with a 22-6-1 dual meet record and placed 4th in the IBSA state meet. Also the wrestlers won regional and sectional titles for the first time in the school's history. There were nine wrestlers who won 20 or more matches. They were seniors: Mike Metzger, Tony Thomas. Jeff Evans, and Bryan Smith; juniors: Terry Hart and Marty Watrous; sophomores: Darin Carroll, Brad Spent, and Herb Porter. Wrestling in the Assembly Hall and placing 4th was the highest point of any wrestling season. The Bombers took the eighteen-man roster to the Hall. All were awarded me- dallions for the 4th place effort to upset Lawrenceville 29-26 and Litchfield 24-19. The two dual meets were the most exciting in recent Argenta history. The many fans that trav- eled to Hillsboro can attest to that! The moment of the final heavyweight bout and the celebration after will stay in the memories of all for a long time. Several team members set new school records, others set new personal bests, two qualified for the state meet, and the season seemed to fly by at times. David Spent and Pat German will remember this year for a long time. David placed second in the long jump at the sectional meet qualifying him for state, and he set a new school record of 11.4 seconds in the 100m dash. Pat placed third in tht 800m dash at the sectional meet qualifying for state with his time. There,he finished fifth and set a new school record of 1:57.64 minutes. Overall, Pat placed first twenty-two times this year, won the 800m, 1600m, and 3200 runs (all THREE) at four different meets, and was voted most valuable member. The season wasn't all excitement, though. The practices had their gruesome pans. For most of the team, running hills (ugh!) was definitely the worst. Jason Emmert added practicing high hurdles to his .list, and Jason Kary added running 440’s. For these two, their practicing paid off as Jason Kary went on to win the 400 in the Macon-Piatt County Meet (the highlight of his season) and Jason Emmert won the high hurdles in a triangular meet (the highlight of his season). The track tea worked hard this year and had dedicated members. The seniors will definitely be missed next year, but there ai quite a few underclassmen who are ready to shine. 2. 1986 TRACK TEAM: Front Row: Pat German, Travis El- liott, Jeff Osborne. They were worked hard by Coach Fitzgerald. Every day after school the girls hit the track. Some of the girls ever practiced in the morning before school. But it was well worth it in the long run (and run and run . .. ). They were 11-1 in the dual triangular meets and were the Macon County Champions. Senior Jodi Schoen and Juniors Stacey Bevins and Lisa Fyke qualified for Area Best. Jodi threw the discus, Stacey Bevins ran the 100 hurdles, and Lisa ran the mile. Stacey and Lisa also qualified for the State Meet. The track season wasn't all work. The girls had a lot of fun, too. On the bus, Suzette Shafer would lead everyone in a rousing rendition of Bingo. After the meet in Shelbyville, the team stopped at a Hardee's with a playground where hey held the Bomber Olympics. They made an obstacle course and timed themselves as they ran through it. It was utter chaos, and no one was ever, quite sure who won. After the season was over. It seemed to be a year of good seasons at AOHS, and the 1985-86 baseball season was indeed good as the team finished with a 17-7 record. When the team beat Mt. Zion, it was a memorable time for everyone; but then, the team had a lot of moments that will be remembered: Coach Saunches' jokes ... all the games that were rained out ... all the running in practice. There were excellent individual accomplishments as well as excellent team work this year. Seniors Tony Thomas and Bryan Smith were voted by the team to be honorary captains, and junior Doug Boyd and senior Tony Thomas were awarded most valuable players. Junior Doug Boyd also had the highest batting average, batting .442. Juniors Brian Ennis and Mike Eller tied for the most home runs with five, and juniors Brian Ennis and Doug Boyd tied for most RBIs with 26. Juniors Mike Eller and Doug Boyd led the doubles with nine, senior Tony Thomas, junior Brian Ennis, and freshman Jarrod Dyke tied for the most triples with two. and junior Mike Eller led the pitching staff with a 5-1 record. But. like all seasons, it had to end. This was a sad moment for all. especially the seniors. As senior Tony Thomas said. Like most students, I never really thought or cared about how the yearbook was made or how money was raised to finance it. I learned a lot this year, says staff member Diana Brisch. The yearbook staff meets every day during homeroom and many days after school. The meeting place is the room of advisor, Mrs. Parks, and this year there are 17 members on the staff. About a month after school begins, ad sales start and yearbooks are sold at school. One of the most fun parts about the yearbook is taking snapshots around school. And, of course, there are group pictures. When the pictures begin coming in, the staff starts laying out pages. This is organizing pictures and copy (a write-up like you are reading now) as they will be seen in the yearbook. Sometimes it's hard to cram all the pictures onto the page, and many long hours are spent arranging pages just right and meeting deadlines. Being on the staff is a real chal- lenge, but the experienced members swear that it's worth it to see their efforts in print. Student Council What does the average AOHS student on the street think the Student Council does? According to sophomore Jason Emmert, They get lazy people out of homeroom. But the Student Council really has many jobs unknown to most of us. Think about where the candy bars come from, who raises and lowers the flag, and who plans homecoming week? The Student Council also p lanned our first video dance (even though it was a little late), and thanks to them the yearbook staff has a new camera!! The Student Council isn't all work, though. When we asked sophomore member Lance Broeking about his favorite experience, he said, It was in Chicago on the way to the state convention when we tried to get Mr. Kimler to eat escargot at Berghoffs. If you know the answer to this question, give yourself ten points and come to a Scholastic Bowl practice. The Scholastic Bowl Team is made up of five students who sit behind a table and press a buzzer when they know the answer to a question. If their answer is correct, the team gets 10 points and a bonus question worth 20 points. A game consists of 25 toss-up questions and five bonus questions. Well, now that you have some background on Scholastic Bowl, let s take a look at their season. This year the Central Illinois Scholastic League was organized with nine schools in the League which includes A-O, Clinton, Mt. Zion, and St. Ieresa. Our record this year was 26 wins and 6 losses. We won first place in the League with a 7-1 record, placed second in the League tournament, and won first place in the Mt. Pulaski Scholastic Bowl with a 5-0 record. We completed our season by winning the Richland Community College Scholastic Bowl for the third consecutive year with a 4-0 record. Our team brought home a trophy from every tournament and event in which they participated this year. We arc losing seven valuable team members this year: Tom Jones. Mark Snoke, Maria Oldweiler, Kipp Ankrom. Kent Wolf, Shawn Decker, and John Jontry. Shawn was the team captain and was second on the team by winning 740 points. He also gave the team s answers to the bonus questions. John Jontry was selected the MVP and answered 153 toss-up questions for 1530 points. He achieved a first this year for A-O by being named to the Wenona Scholastic Bowl All-Tournament Team. There were 80 teams in the tournament with hundreds of individuals and John placed fourth with 330 points. Although the junior varsity team did not fare so well as the varsity, there is obviously a lot of talent, and we look forward to an outstanding team in a few years. HVGCMTn '«CRN °ERNP 1. Tom Jones — Presidential Academic Fitness Just My Size This year sped by so quickly. Looking back it's hard to see where all the time went. So many things happened. Remember winning homecoming, beating Maroa, and going all the way to the state playoffs in football? Throughout the fall and winter we saw Dick Durbin's visit, the mock-wedding, a good scholastic bowl season, and a superb fourth in state for our wrestlers. In the warmer months we sent both girls and guys to the state track meets, had our first video dance, conducted an egg I-Search for Julie Ander- son when she lost her family-living project, and welcomed Lt. Gov. Ryan when he flew in via helicopter to speak to us about school consolidation. We played frisbee on the front lawn, sent the seniors to Florida and back, and sat through a stifling, reward- ing, bittersweet graduation. It was a great year full of fun and events to be proud of, which just goes to prove Argenta-Oreana High School IS Just My Size! A note to the Seniors: We've been together for so many years, and time has flown by too quickly. Now it is time to say Goody- by, to wish you luck in all you do, and to thank you for the memorable times we've spent together. May you always be happy, and may you find the niche in life that you can say is 'Just My Size.'' 102 Closing 1. Sophomore Jodi Uhler in your average student s pose — asleep! 2.
