George Grubbs Roger Foulks John Cooper Gene Howe Senior Lettermen” i Scott Smith Mike Schlattweiler Randy Suzewitz Bombers Have A 4 5 Season Irony would be the word to describe the 1972 football season. The local newspapers described the Bombers as conference contenders. H e had many returning lettermen. There was much talent. The team was “up” for Fairbury, our first opponent. Then it started happening. Injuries struck down many of our prominent players. Bruce Stoddard and Bon Tredennick began the trend of injuries by being injured in the first game. They were followed by Barry Thorpe, John Hardin, Jeff Heimer, Dan Cooper, and Dick Logue. Our quarterback, Larry Hupp, was injured the last game of the season. Although the Bombers had a 4-5 record, the season did have its bright spots. During the first three games, the opponents were scoreless. The Bombers were also successful in winning the Football Jamboree at .Mantic. One of the most triumphant moments during the season was being named “Team of the Week” by the DECATUR HERALD. The Bombers had little trouble with the Homecoming game, as they trampled Detand-Weldon, 61-6. Again, many lettermen will return in the fall of 1973. Again, there will be an abundance of talent available. With sclf-discii)linc, team unity, and a winning attitude, a great season could result. The Frosh-Soph team ended with a 6-1 record, averaging 26 points a game. The Freshmen ended their season with a 3-2 record with an average of 21 points per game. The experience gained by these junior varsity players will help them for their varsity years ahead. As one event ended and led to another, October 14 showed the promise of being one of the best homecomings in history. With the sun shining brightly and people lining the streets, the parade tvas enjoyed by alL “Where Eagles Do Not Dare” presented by the class of ‘73 captured the eyes of the judges as the best float in the [ arade. Second place was won by the Juniors for their original and colorful version of a hungry football entitled “Eat ‘Em Up”. The Erench Club was awarded third place for their float depicting “L’arc de triomphe” and “The Tomb of the Unknown Eagle”. An added feature of this year’s fiarade was the marching band from Deland-Weldon. The football game was even a better success. The Bombers were victorious as they tromped Deland 61-6. Following the banquet, Bruce Stoddard and Sheri Black were crowned king and queen to the music of “Summer of ‘42”. The Power Company provided music for the homecoming dance which followed the coronation. So, the promise of a beautiful homecoming was kept. Jenny Hornback, Dan Cooper, Julie Higgins, Bruce Bovett.
