BE A T BENNINGER It was quite amusing to see Kent Morsch gasping for air after my throw of that creamy, greasy pie in his face! Who wouldn't love to present such a sweet trifle to his brother! But this was the result of an even happier event, the raising of money for the ICYE fund. Your generosity has made it possible for another foreigner to experience America. Your friendliness towards me was just incredible. I didn't meet anybody in this school who disliked me; everybody was my friend. You didn't treat me as a normal student; very often you have made me the center of attention. You have almost spoiled me a little bit, and I can't think of re-adapting myself to Swiss life without frowning. I always had one big event to look forward to: football is the most exciting sport for me after soccer and skiing. I won't forget Up the Down Staircase and the track season in spring, and I shall miss Homecoming and Prom much back in Switzerland. Of course for me as a Swiss some things on stage and back stage of this school seem to be rather uncommon. The maturity of the students is every school's concern. I am a little disappointed to find quite a few of you pupils messing around with alcoholic beverages and drugs even though you know it is against the law and especially against your parents' will. I don't want to believe that the school authorities have to require passes for the students who are in the halls during classes. However, there must be reasons for this suspicion. But why don't you students prove that you can be trusted? It needs individual maturity to do it, but it would finally take care of a lot of unnecessary troubles. I hope nobody will mind my little criticism. I only want to tell you about some of my negative observations. I thank the Agrenta-Oreana High School very much for a wonderful extremely interesting year. As the last day approaches, more and more I realize how much I like everything here. I have even become familiar to the countryside, which is probably quite unusual for a Swiss. I had the great opportunities to see many parts of your country. There were uncountable different faces. I was impressed by the silence and beauty of the northern lakes and forests and I was depressed by the dirt and the despair in the ghetto of Chicago. A voyage from Argenta to New Orleans in one day demonstrated to me the size of the United States. To drive in fifteen hours from the ice-cold winter into springtime was hard for me to believe. In Switzerland we either have spring, summer, fall, or winter but not two or three seasons at the same time. It was quite a pleasure to explore the way of American dating and your entire way of American life. I'm certain this year was just a beginning of more American experiences in the future. Ich kann Euch dafur nicht genug danken. 15 DEDICA TION Mrs. Gore — the teacher who started our formal education. Mrs. Gore has taught in this district for the past thirteen years. Through her leadership, guidance, and dedication, the program she was hired to initiate was very successful. This program was the first of its kind in Macon County. With the above facts in mind, we the staff of the 1971 Pilot, on behalf of the graduating class of 1971, do dedicate this yearbook to our Kindergarten teacher MRS. Of one we loved and Will never forget. 36 LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL BY GINGER VARNER The world is a massive place. People live on this earth. Bonds are formed between these people because everyone needs someone. There needs to be abounding love all over the world. Friends, family, love, peace, and God make life beautiful. Each one of these shows, in its special way, how beautiful life really is. Life is God given. No one should take life for granted. There are many beautiful things in the world, but life is the most beautiful. Everyone needs friends. At times, there is a greater need for them. Loneliness is one of these times. Friends can help to bring joy and happiness to the lonely. They will always listen to one's problems and try to suggest solutions. One of the best characteristics of a friend is his loyalty. Friends will never let you down in a time of crisis. They give constructive criticism only aimed at showing how much they care. Friends show how beautiful life is. When these people are unloyal and unkind, they can not be called friends. At this time, life might not be beautiful. But there are many people in this world just waiting to give their friendship to someone reaching out. Friends make life beautiful. What would a person do if he did not have a familyl Children and their parents depend greatly upon each other for love, security, growth, and the knowledge of belonging to one another. The family should not be divided. It should be as one. Children grow and learn with their parents. One would be lonely if he did not belong to a family or for that fact, anyone! Even if a member of a family dies, the structure can withstand this pressure. Sometimes death can bring about stronger persons in a family. Being part of a family shows how much life is really beautiful! The best way I can express my feelings, on how life is beautiful, is by giving an example. About a year ago, I became very ill. I was checked by doctors and specialists very closely. It became evident that I had a tumor in the pelvic area. Surgery was an immediate remedy. The operation was a major one but gave no evidence of complications. I was in the hospital for a few weeks recovering fine. Little did I know that the doctors had not told me my life had been greatly changed. I was informed that I had one of the most terrifying evils in medicine. It was cancer! Many things went through my mind-life, death, family, friends, and God. The doctors hoped that the cancer would not spread to any other parts of the body, after they removed the cancerous tissue. I began to take cobalt treatments. They never seemed to end. But I had to realize that these treatments gave me life. Steadily I gained strength and was able to begin living a little again. After several months I was fine, but the doctors kept a very close check on me. Then the bubble burst. Pow!! I was deathly sick again. Like before, cobalt treatments were given to help me. They seemed to help once again. Then after school started, I became ill once more. Cobalt treatments seemed to remedy the cancer for the time being. It seemed to be an endless cycle-in the hospital and then out again. Even now, I take treatments off and on. It seems like I will never really be well again! It is hard to believe that I had never really been sick in my life until last year. Now my life is touch and go. Many times the doctors do not know exactly what is wrong with me. So one can realize my feelings about life. One thing that always seems to be on my mind is death. In ways this is bad, and in others it is good. I have come to face death since it is so prevalent in my life. Everyone must realize the presence of death sometime. I have come very close to it even now, its presence could be near. I am not afraid, though. Realizing death has given me a new outlook on life. Even more now, I want to do everything and go everywhere. Life means so much to me. I do not want to miss out on anything. Life seems so beautiful. Facing death has also helped to strengthen my belief in God. I realize that he is really the only one who can help me. God is always there. I love him, and he loves me. All I have to do is reach out to God. He will give me strength and courage for now and forever. Friends, family, love, peace, and believing in God have all helped me realize how wonderful life is. I want to live! Never so much have I wanted to as right now. No one really understands how I feel, unless they have been through the same thing. People should never give up. I will always fight for my life. I will not give up. Truly, life is beautiful! November 4, 1970 GINGER'S ANAL YSIS A TRIUMPH MAY BE OF SEVERAL KINDS BY EMILY DICKINSON This poem is talking about the several kinds of triumph. When death is overcome-this is one kind of triumph. God decides when our life begins and when it ends. But if one is battling for his life, he should look to God for guidance and help. God will give you strength, if he sees fit, to make you well. But if God decides that your place is in Heaven, he will guide you to that wonderful place with him. God will give you strength. You need strength to get well and to get to heaven. Death can only be overcome by faith. God can and will help you to overcome death. You can't do it alone. God will give strength and guidance. Another triumph is when truth is upheld. God sees truth, even if no one else does. Everyone wants the truth, but many times the truth is not given. Even if you tell the truth, sometimes people don't believe you. But God will be your witness to the truth. He will stand up for you when necessary. Another triumph is when temptation is overcome. Many times a day, we, as humans, are tempted. But if we reject this bribe, the heavens will open unto us. It is hard to refuse something like a bribe. But we must be strong and hand it back. The last stanza is speaking of a triumph that is the greatest. This triumph being when a person reaches heaven to be with Our Lord. When you finally reach out and grasp this triumph the beginning of life anew is seen and felt. This is the triumph that all mankind should seek and find. I know that I want to go to heaven because a whole new world awaits me there. One big difference in that world, as compared to the world now, is that Jesus Christ will be there showing the way to all his followers. 37 Mariana Querrey, Richard Urbanowicz BEST FIGURE AND PHYSIQUE MOST TALENTED AND VERSATILE Chris Wilkey, Andy Taylor Dana Wallace, Sheila Kaufman MOST SHY MOST ATHLETIC Richard Urbanowicz, Chris Wilkey Beat Benninger, Ginger Varner BEST PERSONALITY BIGGEST FLIRT Barbara Fairweather, Ken Morsch MOST MUSICAL MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Juanita Kruse, Kent Morsch J L____I I—I BEST LOOKING Steve Ruch, Mariana Querrey Dave Brown, Ginger Varner BEST DKE CLASS CLOWNS Suzie Moreland, Dana Hullinger SAL UTA TORI AN Oh my foot!! That morning found an outstanding, paddle-wheel steamboat, sponsored by the Argenta-Oreana Civic Club. In spite of Cotton Kaufman's expert piloting, by way of a two-way radio to driver Bob Ferrill, the craft hit a tree on North Broadway, and briefly went aground on the railroad tracks by the bank. As far as school sponsored floats, the Senior Class won first place with their float entitled Take Apart the Green Machine . The Sophomore's captured second place with Cream 'Em and the Junior's third with Send Them Back in Pieces . That afternoon our Bombers were defeated by the Lakeview Spartans. The final score was 26-14. At 6:00 our Alumni enjoyed their annual banquet in the junior high gym. Following the banquet they recalled old memories in the high school gym. Homecoming ended that night with our coronation and dance. At precisely 8:25, Andy Taylor and Chris Wilkey walked to the throne to be crowned King and Queen of the 1970 Homecoming by last year's King and Queen, Denny Hill and Nancy Marlowe. After the coronation, students and Alumni enjoyed the music of The Light Brigade. All in all, it was a very memorable day for everyone. 77 Grand Duchess Vicki Frye, Grand Duke Beat Benninger Last Year's Queen Nancy Marlowe, Last Year's King Denny Hill First Row: Andy Hullinger, Shelley Wallace. FROM THE EDITORS As the school year 1971 draws to a close, our thoughts turn to the summer and fall ahead. Seniors look toward graduation and the rough world beyond. Underclassmen are relieved to have seen the passing of another year. But all remember the many happy memories, and the sad ones, at AOHS. Every day we wished to pass quickly or slowly, depending on the circumstances. Each moment of each day is the only one of its kind and should be treasured. These are motives we considered in making this yearbook the best ever. So, as you walk the halls of good old AOHS, in reality or in mind, we hope you remember the year 1971 as one of the four best years in your life. We, the editors, have presented to you the 1971 Pilot. 104 Advertising Tops in Roofing Since 1940 KAUFMAN EASTERN PACKING CO. GATES and JOHNSON ROOFING AND SHEET METAL, INC.
