YEARBOOK STAFF: Back Row: J. Jensen, J. Cox, C. Wilkey, P. Reed, S. Cook, R. Schulze, S. Hastings. Front Row: B. Hill, J. Taylor, D. Stoddard, L. Rumery, S. Reed. Sponsor: Mrs. Autor rgenta Yearbook Ji taff Presents ttie 1967-68 Pilot “Why did you become a foreign exchange student and leave your family for a whole year?” This is a question a lot of people are asking me. Well ... I had met some exchange students in my school in Ger- many and talked to them. They told me about the experiences they had. So, I thought that it must be very great to meet different people, to live under different customs, to speak a foreign language and to make new friends. There are so many differences between the two countries one would never think of. You get another picture of a country if you sec it, than you have if you only hear or read about it. To many Germans, the United States seems perfect and out of reach. People think that all Americans arc very rich, because their cars are so big and that they are all very smart, because they are the mightiest nation in the world. They have to be very athletic too, because they get all the prizes in the Olympics. On the other hand, they have a dangerous life, because the newspaper says that there are 8 murders in Chicago everyday; and in California so many people never come back from their trips they took with LSD. This is all very impressive, but it is not true. However, the Americans are so much like the Germans. They very often think the same way and have the same ideas. Their life-standards are the same too. Actually different to me is school, and food. To start the last one, “food” ... it is really very good!!! Early in the morning it starts al- ready with bacon and eggs or pancakes that surprized me the first time I had it. We would have this kind of food for supper. We have a hot lunch with cooked potatoes always, which I dislike a lot. Hamburgers, fried chicken, jello, and corn were new to me and 1 like them very much by now, but I still can't decide to eat Pizza or peanut butter. Even the smell of peanut butter drives me crazy. There are six hundred girls in our school and only male beings are some teachers. This is sometimes very boring and 1 think with boys it would be more fun. Teenagers in Germany like to do the same things teenagers over here do. They read books, go swimming, have dances, and listen to Beatle records. It might seem funny, but Germans just love to wander through the country. Sometimes we make long trips even overnight. Bike trips are popular, too. We ride pretty far away and stay overnight in so called youth hotels, which are instituted just for young people doing these kind of things. It’s really lots of fun. Since I am here, I have gone through a lot of things I have never done before. I think it is a great experience to be a foreign exchange student. I will always remember my stay in the United States and all the nice people here, and I hope that I'll get to come back sometime. 4 5 Nolan Manuel, Bobby Bruns, Eugene Hill, Hubert Fombelle, Noel D. Long. % a Mrs. Williams, sponsor. From “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” to “Turn Back O Mar , the chorus sings its way. Mrs. Caroline Williams, director of the chorus for twelve years, provides a variety of music for the singing minded of the school. The chorus, which practices on Tuesday and Thursday of each week, participates in a regular yearly schedule of two festivals, a contest, a Christmas program, and the Baccalaureate Service. A blithe spirit floating into the music room at 1:55 on Tuesdays or Thursdays would perhaps find himself quite amusingly entertained. The sight of supposedly sane high school students trying to match the in of their stomachs with the out of their breath and the out of the stomachs w ith the in of the breath while all the time hissing like irate geese undoubtably looks strange but indubitably this has its purpose. The chorus itself is a rather magnificent group sometimes reducing itself to stunned disbelief at the monumentally wrong notes it manages to pro- duce. More often than not the sopranoes may be found submerged in giggles as high g’s come out as flat squeaks, the like to which no note was ever written. Then one day the notes draw together and though the soporanos are too loud, the altos too soft and the bases simply too few, a song slowly emerges. Each voice is a part of the music which rolls out. Each person gives of himself to that sound. At this piont comes the pleasure of singing. The choruses strange practices are directed towards five objectives during the year: the District All State Chorus Festival in the fall, the Christmas program, the state contest for solos and ensembles held in March, the Macon County Chorus Festival of the spring and the Baccalaureate Service. The District All State Chorus Festival is held at Eastern Illinois University sometime in November. Selected members of the chorus are granted the rather doubtful pleasure of getting up at 5 :30 or 6:00 on a Saturday morning and practicing all day on seemingly impos- sible songs. Surprisingly it all seems worth it at the final concert. Again has come the transformation of raggedy phases and squeaks into a flowing stream of music. The Christmas Program is the most important performance of the chorus as a whole. Practice usually begins in mid-November and frantically preceeds the per- formance held about a week before Christmas. Mrs. Williams is probably the bus- iest teacher in the school system at this time of year for she not only prepares the high school but the junior high and grade school Christmas presentations. About two w'eeks after returning from Christmas vacation the solo and ensem- ble contest begins to loom on the horizon. In short the contest itself is a night- mare of sloppy vowels, improper breathing and monstrous sight reading. Alter the contest, comes the Macon County Chorus Festival. This is similar in practice to the district all state and the whole chorus attends the festival which is held at a different Macon County high school each year. The last performance of the year is given at the Baccalaureate Service. Inten- sive practice is held and it is perhaps the most serious performance given by the chorus all year. Chorus is simply group singing and singing is nothing more than talking drawn out in an extended varied tone. Who knows-lf you’re a blithe spirit you might even get some enjoyment out of it.
