We survived our initiation and at our first class meeting we elected Kay Goken as our President, Harold Heinz cur Vice-president, and Eileen McCartney as Secretary-Treasurer. Janet Banning and Mack McConkey were selected to represent our class in Student Council. Miss Carriker and Mr. Goreham were chosen as our sponsors. Many of the Freshman boys participated in sportsâ especially basketball. They defeated the Seniors to win the class basketball tournament. Mack McConkey won the free throw trophy. Kay Goken and Theresa Crowe were elected to be queen attendants for homecoming. We were back in 1953, much braver as Sophomores. To lead cur class was Joe Nixon, President; Kay Boyd, Vice-president; and Gary McConnell, Secretary-Treasurer. Miss Miller and Mr. Crawford were our sponsors. Joe Nixon, Janelle Davis, and Linda Manuel represented the class in Student Council. Again this year we claimed the victory of being the winning class of the basketball tournament, while Mack McConkey preceded to win the free throw trophy. A group of six girls was organized and became known as the Singing Keynotes . Carol Chenoweth and Nancy Florey were our queen attendants. Then in 1954 came our days as Jelly Junicrs. Jean Mackey was President; ,'oe Nixon, Vice-president; and Kay Goken, Secretary-Treasurer. Mrs. Verner and Mr. Heitman, our sponsors, helped us through this important year. We presented the Seniors with a very fine prom using ' Lvening in Paris as our theme. One of the big events of our year was the class play, ' Strictly Formal . Dorothy Jewell and Alice Flaugher were chosen as queen attendants. The Singing Keynotes won an Aâ rating at the state contest. Edwin Wallace won the honors of being basketball captain, he mecc ming king, end the best sports- manship award. This was our third year of being victors in the ciass basket- ball tournament. This was also Mack McConkey's third consecutive year to win the free threw trophy. This last year we came back a little mere dignified because, after all, we did want to leave a good impression. Our officers were Edwin Wallace, President; Carol Chenoweth, Vice-president, and Charlene Schail, Secretary- i reasurer. Miss Carriker and Mr. Wilkey were cur sponsors. Cur class was very well represented in Student Council by Eileen McCartney, Janelle Davis, Kay Boyd, Theresa Crowe, Kay Goken, LeRoy Allen, Edwin Wallace, Rennie Hallendorff, Gary McConnell, Mack McCcnkey, and Jce Nixon. Charlene Schail received the D.A.R. award and was valedictorian. Carol Chenoweth was salutatorian. Alice Flaugher and LeRoy Allen reigned as our '56 home- coming queen and king. The Senior members of their court were Nancy Florey, Kay Goken, John Mackey, and Mack McCcnkey. Edwin Wallace and Mack McConkey were co-captains of our very successful basketball team and they tied for the best sportsmanship award. John Mackey won the free throw trophy. We presented âHillbilly Weddin', which was a big hit. DOROTHY JEWELL Queen Attendant 3; F. H. A. 1, 2, 3; Chorus 1, 2; Dance Re- view 4; Pilot Staff 4. Since Mr. Miller is very interested in things of this sort, he decides to try his luck in steering one to the moon. But as he takes off, he suddenly loses control of the plane and is taken to the heart of the Methow Valley in Washington. As the ship goes over, he makes contact with a forest rangers' tower. Since in all new space ships you can see the person with whom you are talking, he is surprised to see Mack McConkey. Mack tells him that when he arrived, he became interested in this work. He told Mr. Miller that he was watching the 564,000 Question one evening and he saw an old friend, John Justice. John was trying for the top prize, and his subject was Pharmacology. Mack was getting ready to tell Mr. Miller how John came out when the ship suddenly looped and started toward Las Vegas, Nevada. As the plane v as going over the city, Mr. Miller looked down to see the Flamingo Club and the name, Jcmice Dunkel, in flashing lights. She is the singing star of the show. As the plane flys on, he stops to fill the gas tanks in Florida. He hailed a cab and drove to the ocean side to see some deep sea diving. As he pulled up, he saw Gayle Edgecombe, another of the 1956 grads. He is making a living for his family by diving for sponges. As Mr. Miller drove on, he came to the winter home of the Barnum and Bailey Circus. He met Robert Nelson who said he was an animal trainer in the circus and that Robert Bailey, who is a big game hunter in Africa, sends them all their animals. He then joined the driver, Betty Tucker, and they went back to the plane. He asked Betty about some of her high school friends, and she told him that a good friend, Alice Flaugher, was president of the Tab Hunter Fan Club. Another friend, Kay Goken, is selling non-run nylon hose in the John Green Dept. Store. Theresa Crowe is modeling bathing suits for rummage sales in Miami. She said she read in the paper that Phyllis Fyke, now married, is the proud mother of quadrupletsâthree girls and one boy. She named them after her former teachers: Alva, Bertha, Harriet, and Pauline. Phyllis' good friend, Eunice Goodrich, has been hired as the children's nursemaid. Another friend, Janelle Davis, is also merried and has a family of sixâtwo sets of triplets. It seems the class has their families in rather large bunches. Donna Likins is raising and selling registered toy poodles. They arrived back at the airfield and Mr. Miller boarded the ship and tcok off down the field. As he was flying, he looked down to see a flagpole with a small house above it. The sign on the house read: âAncilla GistâFlag- pole Sitter Trying for World's Record. As he was going over Washington, D. C., he decided to stop to see the White House. Walking up the path he met Kay Boyd, who told him that she was the Presidentâs personal maid. Also she had heard LeRoy Allen was pitch- ing for the Chicago Cubs and that Linda Manuel was his manager. Joe Nixon is drawing plans for doll houses for Macy's Dept. Store. Charlene Schall is designing furniture for these houses in her spare time from raising a family. Kay said that while she was listening to the radio cite heard an announcement about Janet Banning who is playing concerts in Carnegie Hall. In the paper Mr. Miller read that Harold Hiner is playing the part of Paw Kettle in the movies. (Remember the senior play?) On the sports page he read that George Conway would be trying for the Golden Gloves and that Ed Wallace, who is captain of the U. of I. basketball team, is averaging 30 points a game. On the front page he read that Carolyn Seevers, a volunteer fireman, had rescued the noted architect, Dorothy Jewell, from a burning building and had been cited for bravery. Dorothy lost a collection of human teeth valued at $10,000 in the fire. Also he saw an advertisement that read: Bring Your Children To Our Day NurseryâFee Only $10.00 per day. Owners, Ruth and Ruby Stogsdili. Kay told Mr. Miller that the President had told her Beverly Mitchell was a secret service agent for the U. S. Government. Mr. Miller bade Kay good-bye and returned to his plane again. Mr. Miller arrived in New York City in time for the basketball game with Ronnie Yetter's team playing against the All-Stars. The first five on Ronnie's team were: Eileen McCartney (captain) Merita Goken. J an Mackey, Betty Dickerson, and Carol Chenoweth. A cup was given by Ernie Wilks, President of A. E. Staley Corp. to the winning team. After the game, Mr. Miller went to the Old Barn TV show. The M.C. was Phillip Haltom, who is a famous disk jockey. First on the program was Nancy Florey, who has recently replaced Minnie Pearl. Next Mr. Miller recognized Jack Cornell who is the leading sax player in the Red Foley Band. On the program Phillip interviewed one of our good friends, Billy Joe Jordan. He is the head bookkeeper for the J. C. Penney Chain Stores. In a film on the show, Mr. Miller saw Larry Smalley win a race with his stock car. The film was sponsored by Gary McConnell who has the 'argest Antique Car Lot in the U.S.A. The next day after Mr. Miller arrived home from his trip, he had a meeting with the school beard. Among those present were John Mackey, Bill Edge- combe. and Gerald Betzer. John is the local undertaker. He says that business :s dead, but cn the level. Bill is an agriculture agent for the government and Gerald is a lawyer for the Buckley Paint Co. In this meeting they were plan- ning for the future and Mr. Miller thought of what the future had brought to :he class of 1956. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council has just finished its fifith year of representa- tion, and we realize more than ever that the Student Council is one of the most important functions in the school. This year the Student Council was led by president, Mack McConkey; vice-president, Edwin Wallace; secretary-treasurer, Eileen McCartney;; reporter, Kay Goken; historian, Janelle Davis; and their very worthy sponsor, Mr. William Crawford. They have accomplished a number of projects, the most important being the origination of a youth center called the Teen Can . Although the youth center was the biggest and longest project, they had two other important ones. The homecoming was again sponsored by the Council. Full co-operaticn and the went to make it a success were the main factors responsible for the compliments received on the 1956 homecoming. The third important project was the revision of the student handbook. With the help and guidance of the teachers, the project was a success. In order to finance the activities they had, the Council sponsored six school movies, sold bumpier strips and Bomber buttons, and ran the coat check on a percentage basis at the basketball games. A larger money making scheme was that of sponsoring a pancake supper. On the whole the Student Council was kept pretty busy this year. A donut sale was sponsored by the chapter from which $26.60 was earned. The F. H. A. and F. F. A. jointly sponsored a semi-formal dance party for the entire student bcdy and teachers in the early spring. Chaperones were parents of the presidents and vice-presidents of both chapters, also chapter parents. Decorations were very elaborate and refreshments were delicious. It was a very enjoyable evening. Our F. H. A. chapter was chosen to be the hostess for the F. H. A. Spring Rally for Section 13. This was a great honor. Everyone worked hard for its success Approximately thirty-six schools were represented by about four hundred F. H. A. members, chapter parents, and sponsors. The F. H. A. served an oyster supper to the Farm Bureau and co-sponsored with the junior class a supper for the Lions Club. Kay Bailey was selected as delegate to the F. H. A. It was another exciting game as the homecoming always is. Between games a flcat parade was held and many clever floats were displayed. Judging them were the board members wives. They had a difficult task to do but announced their decision thus: First Prize___________Sophomores Second Prize________________Freshman Third Prize________Seventh Grade After the game came the proment everyone was impatiently waiting for. The curtains were opened to show the setting for the crowning of the King and Queen. The theme was Swinging on a Star and was carried out very well by a large double swing for the King and Queen. Pedestals, which gave the effect of flowers, on either side cf the swing were used for the court. In the background were stars and a silver mccn.
