It is hard to believe that four short years ago they were a group of thirty-eight confused and be- wildered freshmen. The officers for that year were: President, Sam Miller; Vice-President, Harold Chenoweth; and Secretary-Treasurer, Paul Ooane. The class was prominent in all ac- tivities of the school, seventeen boys having joined the F.F.A. and Harold Chenoweth being elected treasurer. From the twelve freshmen girls in F.H.A., Dorothy Hupp was elected treas- urer. Ten members in band and fifteen girls in chorus constituted the majority of the music positions. Bonnie Schall and Shirley Stout were chosen as queen attendants for the homecom- ing celebration. September, 1947, found that the class was minus four of the original thirty-eight members. This year the following students were the class officers: James McMahon, president; Bonnie Schall, vice-president; and Wanda Kaufman, secretary-treasurer. The sophomores were well represented in F.H.A. , F.F.A., band and chorus. Sophomores who represented the class in ath- letic activities were Sam Miller, Burl Edwards, Don Betzer and Paul Doane. The cheerleaders consisted of three sophomore girls--Jane Boyd, Betty White, and Shirley Stout. The queen’s attendants were Dorothy Hupp and Wanda Kaufman. Peggy Musselman was an Argenois reporter while Shirley Stout was on the Pilot staff. The fall of 1948 found the class of 1950 with thirty-three junior members. The officers for the year were: President, Paul Doane; Vice-President, Norman Kaufman; and Secretary- Treasurer, Shirley Stout. The class was well represented on the Argenois and Pilot staffs and again had a large enrollment in extra-curricular activities. The homecoming was held during the Christmas season and the queen’s attendants for this event were Jane Boyd and Carol Marsh. The class play, The Old Home-Town, was presented in March and was directed by Mrs. Weaver. Under the supervision of our sponsors, Mr. Kramer and Miss Swinford, the jun- ior-senior banquet with '‘April Showers theme was the event of the season, lhe music was pro- vided by Paul Douglas. The senior class started the fall term of 1949 with an enrollment of twenty-eight. Bonnie Schall, Shirley Stout and Sam Miller held the executive positions. The class play, A Letter from Mexico, was given in October. Several members of the class received honors during the year: Bonnie Schall, homecoming queen; Shirley Stout and Dorothy Hupp, queen attendants, Carol Marsh, F.H.A. president; Norman Kaufman, F.F.A. president; and Dorothy Hupp, winner of the D.A.R. award. celebration at argenta high school--all the members of the graduating class of 1950 were there not to mention many graduates of preceding years-- as i was sauntering across the lawn i was accosted by an attractive young lady bernadine ater--why hello i cried--how are you bernadine--my how you have changed--oh yes she said operating a restaurant certainly does things to one--i replied with a chuckle i will cer- tainly agree with you there--oh by the way have you seen jane boyd--of course she said she is over there on the steps--thanks i will see you later--and i made my way to the group chatting in front of the school--hi there i said--we exchanged greetings--then i asked jane how lynn was--oh all right she said he is at home with the children--yes i have six-- of course i think they are tcps--which is very natural was my reply--where is jimny bechtel anyway--i have not seen him anywhere--betty cundiff answered my question with he could not manage to get here for the homecoming--you see he is operating a trading-post in alaska and doing quite well i guess--after expressing surprise at this i said what have you been do- ing with yourself in all these years--i am dean of girls at the girls latin seminary in chicago--i hope to be promoted scon--i am sure you will be was my reply and then i in- quired about Virginia franklin--i believe she is in the building talking with several of our old classmates--a loud stream of laughter led me to her--as i came upon the little group Virginia was teaching don betzer and harold chenoweth a few new tricks in jiu-jit- su--what on earth do we have here i asked--groans and screeches answered me--it is easy to see how you have been occupied all these years--how do you like being a lady-wrestler-- swell she said i have won several trophies just this year--after a weak hello and how are you don and harold commenced to nurse bruises--when asked where margaret was don replied she took don jr and little margaret to see mrs weaver--how nice i said and then i turned to harold--and what have you been doing since way back in 1950--farming mostly he said i am farming about nine hundred acres in Wisconsin--you certainly have progressed in twenty years--may your good fortune continue i called as i turned to leave the group--i had gone only a few feet down the hall when i encountered dorothy hackney and dorothy hupp--after exchanging hellos i asked what they had been doing in the past twenty years--my was i sur- prised when i was informed that dorothy hackney had inherited a million dollars and that she and her husband don had retired to spend the rest of their lives in luxury--and what have you been doing dorothy hupp--oh i have been spending most of my time as girls basket- ball coach at the university of illinois--i was not too surprised at this because dorothy hupp has always been a leader in the p e class back in 19 50 — i took my leave of the two dorothys to search for paul doane and Virginia rainwater--of course it is not rainwater anymore-- lrginia and paul have been baling hay all over the country and are well known for their speed and efficiency--virginia drives the tractor while paul does the baling-- the majority of their time though is devoted to the care of their five children--wanda kaufman with ted and norma le hew with cobb came over to join the group explaining that the maiden names of both wanda and norma had been changed--this was not too surprising after i recalled that the girls had both gone steady in high school--of course that was a long time ago--after some gay conversation i decided to go in search of terry dungey--this was astonishingly easy all i had to do was follow the crooning notes of a dreamy song that was floating along on the crisp morning air--i soon came upon terry and a group of swaying bobby-soxers--hello terry i said after the song was over and the girls stood in a stupor-- how have you been doing with your singing--oh wonderful he said i have my own radio sta- tion now--it is station wsap 1,000,001 on your telecast dial--perhaps you would like to listen in some time--i replied in the affirmative and after bidding him adieu i made my way through the crowd but i was soon stopped by pat lindsley--after we exchanged hearty greetings i asked her what she had been doing the past twenty years--oh she said i have been leading a very exciting life--i am a floorwalker in the macy department store in new york--some people call my job being a detective--it is really some occupation--so far i have caught aoout seventeen shoplifters--well that is what i would call really exciting-- as i went in search of some of my other old classmates i called to say i will see you la- ter--! had not gone far when i heard my name called — as i turned i found myself faced by a lovely young lady carol marsh--carol what have you been doing with yourself all this time--oh she answered i have a movie contract with metro-goldwyn-mayer in hollywood and have made seven pictures--now isn’t that swell i agreed i’m sure that you’ll make many more and probably better ones too--good luck to you on them--on my way i went--deciding to go back out on the lawn where i had seen burl edwards and glenda--of course we were very happy to see one another and we enjoyed an interesting chat--it seems that burl and glenda still have the same huge mansion in 1970 that they had in 1954--i wandered over to another group where peggy musselman and dick jones were having a heated discussion on model air- planes--why here is peggy more beautiful than ever i cried overjoyed to see her again-- what have you been doing with yourself in all this time--oh dick and i are partners in a hobby shop in decatur--we have model racers airplanes and coin and stamp collections fig- urines and everything like that--anytime you think you’d like to see or purchase a model airplane or racer just drop in and see us--saying that i would do just that i left her to join joyce oldweiler and gloria roderick--hello girls i said--my questioning glance brought an answer to my unasked question because joyce informed me that she was still engaged--it seemed that her fiance believed in long engagements--gloria informed me that she had be- come a home economics teacher in 1956 and was still teaching in argenta--i asked if she had married yet and she hastened to explain that she was keeping her eyes open--i gave her a knowing wink and passed on to the next group--shirley stout said that she had become a lady boxer after graduating in 1950 but was now retired as bud wouldn’t allow his wife to work--he explained though that shirley often practiced at home when he was sluggish about drying the dishes--this retort merited a loud guffaw from kenneth mullins and bob marsh--i asked how they had spent the last twenty years and they replied that they had gone into a partnership in farming the north eighty near mullins’ farm (the north eighty inches in the back yard that is)--then i turned to norman kaufman and betty white (not white anymore) who said that they were just as happy and content as any couple would be on their fif- teenth wedding anniversary--after congratulating them i asked where bonnie schall and sam miller were--betty explained that bonnie was to play in a concert in carnegie hall the following afternoon and that she and sam could not attend the homecoming—i expressed my disappointment at this as i had wished to see their children--perhaps i can see them some other time i said going in search of my jacket--it was nearly noon--i had intended to stay only until lunch time--i bade my old classmates good-bye and made my way to the car--good- bye--good luck to you during the next twenty years JUNIOR CLASS Front row, left to right: Mrs. Verner, P. The play was built around an episode in the life of Henry Stengle (Dick Jones) who favors the easy way of life but his boarding house doesn’t provide for the luxuries his family de- mands. His wife, Clara (Dorothy Hackeny), his older daughter, Grace (bonnie Schall), and his spinster sister, Aunt Flora (Bernadine Ater) clamor continually for a new automobile, new furniture, redecorating, and new clothes. Henry receives a letter from Mexico in which he is offered a huge fortune for giving fi- nancial assistance to a man in jail in Mexico. Not having enough money, he borrows it from Aunt Flora, the colored maid, Posie, (Peggy Musselman) and a boarder, Steve Burns (lerry Dungey). They tried to keep the bank dealings from the younger daughter Ellen (Jane Boyd), but she found out the information. With the aid of two boarders, Oscar Sutter (Kenneth Mullins), a swaggering fellow who worked for a steamship company, and Hazel Waring (Dorothy Hupp), a newspaper reporter, the mystery was soon solved and everyone was happy again. ATHLETICS BASKETBALL At the end of the 1949-1950 season Argenta’s records stood at thirteen wins and twelve losses. It was an average season with the teams playing strong in some games and weak in others. In the Macon County Tournament the bombers played a good game but were beaten by an improved Blue Mound team in an overtime. Argenta’s outstanding game of the season was with strong Monticello. The Bombers were within one point of the Sages with 9 minutes to go, but were beaten 43-35.
