ORCHESTRA AND BAND The first Orchestra which Mr. Silliman remembers at Ardsley was made up of a piano, violin and drum. Soon an itinerant leader came to the school for a couple of days a week. At first his salary was paid by the students and the proceeds from entertainments. Then the board decided to employ a part-time teacher at a small salary. From l930 to l937, Mr. Nicholas Koenig came to the school twice a week for orchestra, and, by putting in more time than he was actually paid for, trained many students in the playing of instruments. During the four and one-half years from l937 to 1942 in which Mr. Mitchell C. Vincent was in charge of music, great advancement was achieved. With his up-to-the-minute training and enthusiasm he developed really first-class organi- Zations. Miss Dorothy Notary came to the school on a cadet basis and proved so valuable, both for her class work in the grades and her special ability in flute, oboe, and cello, that she has been retained as a full time instructor. The high point of the Orchestra's experience was the trip to Atlantic City in l94l, where they won an honor rating in their division. Upon Mr. Vincent's enlistment in the Army Air Corps, Mr. Harry F. Taylor was employed. With about one- third of the student body playing some instrument, Ardsley can well be proud of its fine organizations. They are partici- pating in the district festival, and perhaps in the National at Syracuse this spring.
