11111l111111111111111111111 E D I T O R l A L If democracy rs to stand as the ultrmate of human endeavor educational leaders of this war stricken world must accept more fully than ever before the philosophy which recognizes great differ ences rn rndrvrduals yet the potentralrty of evolving personality ln thrs day when so many people are strangers to others when susprcron places a shell around natural friendliness towards others the cryrng need rs for companionship We need to be happy not alone but all together A program of recreation and lersure education can be planned to meet these desires Recrea tron intellectual interests esthetic Interests and character can all be met by a program that provides for these needs We are rrch rn opportunrtres for developing such a program rn Ardsley High School With the newly organized and thrrvrng clubs the rndrvrdual comes rn contact wrth hrs fellow classmates and learns to cooperate and to express hrs special talents These organrzed groups provide means of drversron different from the ordmary form of recreation and a resprte from the problems of each day But these clubs are not the only way for p eople to seek out pleasure Sports constitute a large part of the recreational program of the normal stud ent Spring autumn and wrnter find the gymnasium filled to the capacrty with children who are indulging rn baseball basketball hockey badminton shuf fleboard et cetera Under the guidance of the physical education teachers thes sports become orva nlZCd and all sorts of tournaments which provrd amusement for all are played off patrng rn the chorus band or orchestra are busy continually with actrvrtres associated with them For example this year the band was made rnto a crack marching outfit which played at all the home basketball games Making the best out of what material was at hand and with the assrstance of a drum majorette and five twrrlers the organrzatron won wrde acclaim throughout the neighboring schools Students rn the orchestra and chorus are grven a chance to vrsrt other schools and to com pete wrth them such competrtron tends to grve each rndrvrdual an rncentrve to do hrs best rn srngrng or rn playing some instrument ln the class rooms such major projects as food sales plays the publrshrng of magazines and papers and selling of magazine subscriptions help to unrfy the student body as well as to rarse money for a trrp to Washington D C durmg the senior year This trrp rs the goal of these projects and towards whrch even the lowly freshmen strrve The Honor Society and Student Councrl are made up of the leaders of the student body Both of them function for the purpose of gurclrng boys and grrls through hrgh school This brief summary of ceaseless actrxrtres rn this school rs to show how a puprl spends some of hrs 3 500 annual leisure hours With these golden opportunrtres of ways to pass leisure time to the best advantage rn and outside of the regular school hours rs rt small wonder that the graduate of Ardsley High School looks back upon hrs school days with happy remrnrscences3 iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii11111111111 , l . . .
