EDITORIAL HE PURPOSE of the Amerlcan school system IS to prepare the student as well as possnble for his later life Although stnctly speaking the art of soclal graces ns not included lh the regular curnculum It IS as important to the student as algebra French chemistry etc Once out ln the world we must talk work and play w th others and unless we have mas tered the art of gettxng along wlth people we are serlously handicapped It IS the oplmon of everyone m school that the Soclal Club IS a step ln the achievement of thls arm The Social Club ns not as nts name mlght lmply a club wnth restrlcted membership dues or other encumbrances It IS rather a penod of recreatxon ln whlch any hugh school student be he jew Aryan Catholic or Protestant may partlclpate These students gather to play pxng pong dance llsten to the music or just to Indulge 1n the fine art of conversatlon Thus under the supervlslon of a teacher who has made the guidance of youth ln extra currxcular actlvltxes her llfe s work the prlnclples of cooperatlon and tol rance that IS those of Amen camsm are pamlessly assnmllated For the last five years there has been a Dark Age ln socxal actrvltles that rs there have been few partnes and those that have been held have not been too successful The reason for thls has not been poor supervnslon but that the number of puplls who knew how to dance was comparatxvely small Thxs IS bemg remedied by the Soclal Club so that many students who never danced before the advent of the Social Club glide gracefully over the floor Another serious defect of these partles was that the non dancers drd not know how to play any game well enough to be thoroughly mterested m lt therefore they might easnly get into trouble This ns bemg remedied by the Soclal Club whlch supplies the necessary equip ment and the opportunity for learmng Thus the pupxls have had the actual enjoyment of bemg together and playing games The Social Club remedies the deficiencies ln the student body s social educatlon and lt also gets the pupils together so that they may discuss thexr ndeas about war peace lnfe lub erty and the pursuxt of happiness They learn another s vxewpomt and realize that there are two sldes to every argument They learn that all Germans aren t bad and by the same token that all Englxshmen aren t good They learn that although the Republicans may be strong ln thelr hatred of Democrats they both have the same purpose to make Amenca better ln short the Social Club IS the connectmg lmk between students and provides opportunlty for the students to acquire the socnal graces lt IS everybody s club without partlallty and wlth a hearty welcome for all The student body ns very grateful to Miss Saunders for her efforts nn founding and guxdmg the soclal hour and hopes that next year her efforts will be rewarded by a bugger and better Socxal Club 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ' 1 1 1 ' , .. 1 1 1 1 . . , 1 1 1 1 - ' 1 1 1 - 1 ' - . . . . - . . . . . SENIORS LTHOUGH ANXIOUSLY WAITING to experience what the four long years held ID tore for us elther torturlng moments or joyful unforgettable events we as Freshmen colorfully attlred ln newlv purchased frocks and suxts marched self consclously to our Alma Mater early ln September 1936 We gamed much valuable experlence from our first two projects whlch conslsted of a food sale and a movie but ln our Sophomore year when we realized that our Washmgton trlp was drawing nearer we decided to work dxllgently for a more successful year Chief Sun flower was our first program for the new year and was followed by the Easter Egg and Cake Sale ln addltlon we sold Schrafft s candy at the home basketball games and thxs delighted everyone Wlth fresh splrlts and hxgh ambltlons our class now full fledged Juniors started the ball rolllng by wmnmg first place IH the Senior Magazme Campaign But our progress was not to end there We soon undertook our first project when we sponsored Spawn of the North at the Embassy Theatre followed by an After Easter Cake Sale Our most important enterprise was the l939 Ardsleyan which proved to be a great success and which expanded conslderably our Washington Trip Fund We as dlgnlfied Seniors eagerly looked forward to the numerous actxvltles which con fronted us The followmg class offxcers were elected Ruth Gubler Presldent Howard Con nors Vice Presldent Fannie D Angelo Secretary and jack Krassner Treasurer The Senlor Subscription Campaign was glven vigorous support by the entlre hugh school whose efforts were rewarded by a subscrlptlon party A successful food sale was enthusxashcally supported by the members of the class and the result surpassed our fondest expectatlons The Ghost of Grand Canyon our semor play occupied first place ln our minds The presentation took place on April 5 Realizing that our dream of the Washington Trip would soon become a reallty we looked forward wlth eagerness to April I5 whlch wlll no doubt llnger ln our memories for years to come As the year draws to a close we look forw ard to a promlsmg future of great achlevements and success m our chosen vocations and yet we cannot wrrte 61115 to our hugh school career wlthout ln some way expresslng our deep gratltude to all our teachers who have been pillars of strength and encouragement to us throughout these past four years whlch although fun for all have contamed their share of trials and trlbulatlons It was their lnvaluable aSSlSt ance that alded us ln conquermg these obstacles This year the production of the semor play has meant a great deal more work for all especially for our advlser Mass Buell who dlrected It To her go our sincerest thanks for all the valuable tlme and energy she spent m msurmg nts success Fannie D Angelo B' V I 7 7 1 , - , . , 1 H . -1 . . . .
