7 ' f J ,N LOCAI SPI: AKIING CONTEST The hrst local speakmg contest the wxnners of whlch were to represent our school ln the Crreenburgh League lnterscholastlc Speaklng Contest was held nn the Ardsley Hrgh School audxtorlum Wednesday ey emng March I3 at elght o clock A small tax of ten cents was asked from each per on to buy prlzes for the wmners of the contest The people were greatly ama7ed at the ablllty of the speakers and they were proud of the students for therr ambxtlon and work ln preparlng thexr se lectxons Ex en the Judges were overcome wlth surprlse so that they dld not know who should get the first prlze Howeyer Mary Moccla and lsldore Verch won first prlzes five dollar gold pieces The second prlze went t ames Trans and Ruth Mathews whnle Wesley Brown and Louxse SlCllldI'lO were awarded thrrd Everyone enjoy ed the speaking contest and thought that Ardsley Hlgh School has somethm to be proud of for they are workmg up a reputatlon IH publlc speaking Thrs year s lnterscholastrc PYIZE Speaklng Contest was held ln the audl torlum ofthe lrvmgton Hlgh School on Friday April 76 1929 Each contestant gave his or her recltatlon wlthout any announcement They were for the most part prose Mary Moccla our representative for the glrls was third to speak She had the entlre attentxon of her audlence dur mg her excellent rendltron of The Whnte Hands of Telham Thus mter estlng and excxtxng selectxon was one of the best on the program and Mary deserves much prarse for her hard work ln preparmg xt so well lsldore Verch was slxth on the program He used Patrlck Henry s Address before the VlYglDla Convention and hrs dellvery of lt mnght have equalled even that of Patrlck Henry himself The audience enyoyed xt yery greatly as was showr by thelr generous applause The repertoire of the orchestra was not greatly taxed at the end of the contest because the Judges arrlyed at a speedy declsxon Their yote was unammous for ooth Arndrew Verdln of Dobbs Ferry who had given Eulogy of Lmcoln a md Ruth Kllne of Creenburgh who had recnted The Famme an extract from Hlawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The Judges gaxe SPCCIBI commendatlon and honorable mentlon to lsldore Verch 'Vlary and lsldore deserves much praxse for the splendid preparation of thelr selections We must not forget Mlss Buell elther for she gave many hours of her time to coach them I2 1 9 .. .I A I I I I, If Y --I X T . . 3.
