After six months at Rutgers University Extension in New Brunswick, he enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1948. He entered the United States Naval Academy in June 1949. Upon graduation from Annapolis Lieu- tenant Commander Cornell was commis- sioned Ensign on June 5, 1953. He served aboard USS NAVARRO QAPA-2155 from July 1953 through July 1955 and USS M. C. FOX QDDR-8291 from July 1955 throughJu1y 1957 in various junior officer billets. After spending six months as a student at the Naval Schools Mine Warfare in Charleston South Carolina, .he served as an instructor there from February 1958 through Novem- ber 1959. From December 1959 through January 1962 Lieutenant Commander Cornell was attached to STAFF COMSERVRON FOUR. After leaving there he attended Navy post- graduate school in Monterey, California where he received two years instruction in Operations Analysis. In July 1963 he re- ported to the United States Naval Academy where he served as an instructor until June 1965. In July 1965 he reported aboard ARCTURUS. A Lieutenant Commander Cornell is mar- ried to the former Miss Catherine J. Salmon of New Brunswick, New Jersey. They have two children, twins, Bryan and Joyce. ,A O ,,,m,-,-,,,,....,,,...,,.x?

.ae-: V COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Walter S. DELANY, Jr., was born in Reading, Pennsylvania June 23, 1922. He attended Annapolis High School and grad- uated from Severn School in Severn Park, Maryland. He attended Dartmouth College from 1939 to 1941 and then graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy. He was commis- sioned Ensign in June 1944. After commissioning Captain DELANY attended the Scout and Raider Course at Fort Pierce until December 1944. He spent the remainder of the war as navigator aboard USS D. W. TAYLOR QDD-5515. After com- pleting submarine school in June 1946 he served aboard USS SENNETT, Staff COM- SUBRON TWO, USS TUSK and USS CORP- ORAL in various billets. From 1951 to 1953 he was stationed in the Athletic De- partment at the U. S. Naval Academy and was Head Coach of the Navy 150 lb. team which won the Eastern Intercollegate Championship. In July 1955 he assumed command of USS CAVALLA QSS-2465 and commanded this submarine until September 1956. After three months on COMSUBLANT Staff .he assumed command of USS CROAKER fSS-2445 from February 1957 to July 1957. He then attended Stanford University for one year receiving his Masters Degree in Edu- cation. Next followed a tour of duty at BUPEPS where Captain DELANY ran the Electronic Data Processing Center from September 1958 through March 1960. From 1960-1963, he was in Hamburg, Germany serving as U. S. Naval Liaison Officer. Returning to the United States, Captain DELANY was operations officer COMSUB- RON 5, and Commander Submarine Division 51. During this tour Captain DELANY was also responsible for the planning and de- velopment of the newly established U. S. Naval Submarine Support Facility, San Diego. In July 1964 he reported to Joint Staff CINCLANT where he served through June 1965. Captain DELANY assumed com- mand of USS ARCTURUS QAF-525 on 20 August 1965. Captain DELANY is married to the former Anne CULP of Gainesville, Texas. They have one daughter, Mary Anne, who is married andlives in Eugene, Oregon.
