CAPTAIN W. F. CHAIRES Captain W. F. 'Chaires entered the Navy in July 1941 and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1944. He reported to the USS BATAAN soon after graduation where he served during the remainder of the war. After World War II, the then Lieutenant Gunior gradey became a flight student at Pensa- cola. After earning his wings in July 1947, he was assigned to VB-4B. He became a member of VB-42 shortly afterwards. In June 19591, he was trans- ferred to Air Development Squadron Three in Atlantic City, N. J., and soon was promoted to Lieutenant. His next assignment was in Jackson- ville, Fla., where he served as Landing Signal officer in VF-172. As a Lieu- tenant, he received the Navy Unit Com- mendation in 1952 for services aboard the carrier USS ESSEX, during the Korean conflict. In May, 1952, Lieutenant Chaires began a tour in Washington as amember of the staff of the Chief of Naval Opera- tions. He served as Aide to the Deputy CNO for air and later as Aide to the Deputy CNO for Operations and plans. He reported for 27 months duty as Operations Officer and Executive Officer of VF-61 at Oceana, Va., in April 1955 and in July of that year advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He then became a student at the Naval War Col- lege at the Naval Station in Newport, R.I. His next tour of service was with the Commander of Naval Air Forces, U. S. Atlantic Fleet QJuly 19585. In this capacity, he served as Operations Officer for two years and was advanced to the rank of Commander shortly .before departure. After four months as a student replace- ment pilot with VF-101 at Key West, Fla., Commander Chaires served as Com- manding Officer of VF-14 based aboard the carrier FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. In February 1962, C ommander Chaires again reported for duty in Wash- ington serving in the Strategic Plans Division of the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. In August 1963 he became a student in the National War College, Washington, D. C., and graduated inJune 1964. He received his Masters Degree in International Affairs from George Wash- ington University in September 1964. He then reported to USS FORRESTAL and served as Executive Officer until he was promoted to Captain and assumed com- mand of NAS New Orleans on July 24, 1965. After leaving New Orleans Captain Chaires reported aboard ARCTURUS and assumed command on 29 August 1966. Captain Chaires is anative of-Mary- land. He and Mrs. Chaires, the former Jeanine Crocco, have three children,two sons and a daughter.
