Barcelona, Valencia, and Alicante, Spain, Naples, Italyg and Villefranche. ARCTURUS returned to Norfolk on 5 August 1965. On 20 August 1965 Captain Walter S. Delany, Jr., USN, relieved Captain Fair as Commanding Officer. In October ARCTURUS was recalled from type training operations and ordered on an emergency deployment to the Mediter- ranean to replace her sister ship, ALDE- BARAN which had suffered an engineering casualty. The ship was loaded in four days and was off to the Med on 23 October. On 9 November Commander Service Force Atlantic Fleet, RADM Henry A. Renken visited the ship. During the deployment, 22 ships were replenished. The crew enjoyed liberty in Naples, Italy, Barcelona and Rota, Spain, Villefranche and Toulon, France. On February 11, 1966 ARCTURUS left Norfolk to participate in Operation Spring- board in the Caribbean. Four ships, USS GUAM, USS SUFFOLK COUNTY, USS RAN- KIN, and USS YANCEY were replenished. Ports visited were St. Thomas, V. I. and San Juan, Puerto Rico. ARC TURUS returned to Norfolk on 2 March 1966. After a five week stay in Norfolk, ARCTURUS departed once again for the Mediterranean on 11 April. This was an especially successful cruise and the ship was so noted by the Commanding Officer of the USS SEVERN QAO-611 who said Thank you for an outstanding LOGREP. Your packaging and handling stores was the best we have seen. After leaving the Mediterranean ARC- TURUS headed North and visited Rotterdam, Hollandg Hamburg, Germany, and Copen- hagen, Denmark. During the Northern leg of the journey over 5000 people visited the ship and gained a first hand view of the U.S. Navy and an insight into the part it plays in defending the free world. ARC- TURUS returned to Norfolk on 27 June 1966. With her crew of 17 officers and 203 enlisted men ARCTURUS is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia as a part of Service Squadron FOUR. 34,,.',- 2.5 .1 -V','71f..l1'.'
