FOREWORD There has always been a special spirit at Archibald Rutledge Academy, but last school year and this one have been even more special. 1986- 1987 witnessed a rekindling of spirit, the same spirit the school founders must have had a decade and a half ago. This year is a building year, not only in the physical plant of ARA, but also in the spirit. This is why the theme for FA THOM '88 is “Building the Spirit.” DEDICATION ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are so many people to thank for the success of another school year. There is the Board and Headmaster, of course, and the teachers who give so much of themselves to the business of educating the students of ARA. There are also the many volunteers; substitute teachers, home room hostesses, hot dog sellers, field trip chaperones, PTC officers, the fix the pump (or whatever) when it's broken men, Halloween booth attendants, cake and cookie bakers. Shrimp Festival workers, etc ... Special thanks go to the volunteers who worked untold hours with the basketball and baeball teams, and with the cheerleaders and to those who raised the funds to start the new gym and to the volunteer workers who sanded, nailed, painted, installed wiring, hung lights, and all the many tasks needed to make this dream a reality. The common thread that runs through the fabric of ARA is the attitude of service to the survival of the school, for it wouldn't exist without the help it receives from so many. To those who have given so selflessly and for so long, we say “Thank you.” The tenth edition of Fathom is dedicated to Nancy Morrison, who personifies the spirit of ARA and is a shining example of service to the school. Space does not permit the listing of all her efforts, but all who have come in contact with ARA know that she has been for many years the heart and soul of the school. a

Our Town, Our School McClellanville It's a beautiful town. I've said it a million times to tourists at the Crab Pot. They all check their maps and look at me in amazement. Most are shocked that something as beautiful as I claimed is not on their AAA road map. We may not be known to very many people but we are very proud of ourselves. The village is a town of stubborn people, who like their own way and don't take the easy way. Ever. They save the oak and split the road around it. They put up with hours (and hours) of darkness waiting for the electric company to come. They even refuse to use the public schools so that they can fight endless loans, mortgages and fun raisers. If all the volunteers were paid for their hours (or even half their hours) at just minimum wage, our debt would be greater than Ronnie's. But they don't expect payment (and it's a good thing too).
