Pirates Make News Tim scores 2 even though closely guarded January 16, 1988 will be remembered forever in the sports annals of the Archibald Rutledge Academy, for it was the night of the first varsity victory in the school's two year old basketball program. The ARA Pirates routed the Sea Island Academy Sun Devils by an impressive score of 63-36. The newly victorious Pirates were led in scoring by Walter Wrixon with 22 points and by Chris White bucketing 20. A full court press on the part of the Pirate defense was responsible for 15 steals during the game. A spirited crowd travelled with the Pirates to the home standing Sun Devils. A jubilant partisan following cheered the boys to their 31-18 halftime lead. In the locker room at the break there was hysterical screaming and yelling. Good play also in the second half built the lead. This allowed for valuable floor time experience on the part of the subs. One could feel the excitement building as the game wound down to the final minutes. As the seconds ticked down, a count down was started by the ARA fans, ten — nine — eight — seven — six — five — four — three — two — one. Then there was bedlam. Pirate fans rushed onto the floor in celebrafion. The net was cut down by ecstatic players hoisted on shoulders as a token of victory. Later that night on the Channel 5 news the first- ever win for the Pirates was given a spot. Walter Wrixon
