“Building the Fathom 1988 Volume X Archibald Rutledge Academy 10111 Old Cemetery Road McClellanville, South Carolina 29458 (803) 887-3323 Foreword, Acknowledgements, Dedication 2 Our Town, Our School 3 Classes 4 Seniors 20 Faculty 22 The New Gym 24 Basketball 27 Cheerleaders 35 Superlatives 36 Baseball 38 Shrimp Festival 39 Random Shots 41 Fathom Staff 43 To The Memory Of George 44 Patrons, Fleet, Advertisements 45 a FOREWORD There has always been a special spirit at Archibald Rutledge Academy, but last school year and this one have been even more special. 1986- 1987 witnessed a rekindling of spirit, the same spirit the school founders must have had a decade and a half ago. This year is a building year, not only in the physical plant of ARA, but also in the spirit. This is why the theme for FA THOM '88 is “Building the Spirit.” DEDICATION ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are so many people to thank for the success of another school year. There is the Board and Headmaster, of course, and the teachers who give so much of themselves to the business of educating the students of ARA. There are also the many volunteers; substitute teachers, home room hostesses, hot dog sellers, field trip chaperones, PTC officers, the fix the pump (or whatever) when it's broken men, Halloween booth attendants, cake and cookie bakers. Shrimp Festival workers, etc ... Special thanks go to the volunteers who worked untold hours with the basketball and baeball teams, and with the cheerleaders and to those who raised the funds to start the new gym and to the volunteer workers who sanded, nailed, painted, installed wiring, hung lights, and all the many tasks needed to make this dream a reality. The common thread that runs through the fabric of ARA is the attitude of service to the survival of the school, for it wouldn't exist without the help it receives from so many. To those who have given so selflessly and for so long, we say “Thank you.” The tenth edition of Fathom is dedicated to Nancy Morrison, who personifies the spirit of ARA and is a shining example of service to the school. Space does not permit the listing of all her efforts, but all who have come in contact with ARA know that she has been for many years the heart and soul of the school. a Our Town, Our School McClellanville It's a beautiful town. I've said it a million times to tourists at the Crab Pot. They all check their maps and look at me in amazement. Most are shocked that something as beautiful as I claimed is not on their AAA road map. We may not be known to very many people but we are very proud of ourselves. The village is a town of stubborn people, who like their own way and don't take the easy way. Ever. They save the oak and split the road around it. They put up with hours (and hours) of darkness waiting for the electric company to come. They even refuse to use the public schools so that they can fight endless loans, mortgages and fun raisers. If all the volunteers were paid for their hours (or even half their hours) at just minimum wage, our debt would be greater than Ronnie's. But they don't expect payment (and it's a good thing too). Raise high the roof beam. The Gym Why build a gym? Well, if you want to play basketball, you need a gym to play it in, says Tommy Duke, coach of the Pirates. Last year, the first for varsity sports at ARA, the basketball hopefuls practiced on the outdoor concrete court behind the school. This presented obvious problems, especially during rainy spells. As the sun dropped behind the pines earlier and earlier, and the evenings grew chillier and chillier, the motto of the fledgling Pirates became, If we can play them in the cold and rain, we can beat them. Last year's home games were played at Lincoln Gym. This presented scheduling problems, long waits when the gym wasn't opened on time, and since admission fees couldn't be charged, cost problems. Nevertheless, enthusiastic crowds gathered to cheer on the winless team. The idea for building a gym was born in the spring of 1987. The principals involved were Tommy Duke, Ted Dawson, Henrietta McClellan, Sarah Nell Potter and Gene Morrison. They paced oft an area where the possible gym might sit. Remarkably, the now completed gym sits nearly exactly where they conceptualized it to rise. Preliminary estimates on a structure to meet the needs of a sports program and classroom space were gotten. Sara Nell Potter and Patty McClellan sent out a letter asking for donations and pledges into a Loyalty Fund that would finance the proposed gym in early autumn. Early results were a wide range Reaching For The Sky The Gym (Cont’d) Reaching for the sky of gifts, from $10 to rather substantial ones. Rutledge Leland joined the group and a consensus was reached that if a gym was to be built at all, work should begin at once. With ten families pledging $1000 each and co-signing a note for the balance, groundbreaking quickly followed. This fund raising effort, along with the receipt of several generously large gifts has been responsible for assuring the first step in a three phase program of construction. Bee hive of activity Closing in on completion Early preparation work was done by volunteers, including the basketball players. With the help of David Marcinak and his earth moving equipment, the septic system was moved and rough clearing was accomplished. Soon the foundation was dug and the slab was poured. Work stopped for a month while the slab cured. Excitement ran high as the first shipment of steel girders arrived. Too heavy for the little wooden bridge, the delivery trucks off-loaded at the Baptist Church parking lot. The framework sections were then moved piece by piece, as needed, to the job site. The steel skeleton rose quickly, but a period of steady winter rains brought the drying-in to a standstill. At long last, the roof and sides were up. For nearly a month of weekends and afternoons, the Masterpiece By Many Hands The Gym (Cont’d) shell of a building swarmed with volunteers hammering nails, sawing boards for bleachers, assembling light fixtures, installing gas piping and heaters, putting up conduits for electricity, sweeping up the construction litter and feeding the crews working through lunch. All this while the little ones ran through the embryonic gym shooting imaginary basketballs at the hoopless backboards. Anticipation grew as the tile arrived and the floor started taking shape. Students buzzed about the school in a frenzy of cleaning up and tried their hands at laying tile during recess. With crossed fingers, a sigh of relief and a swelling of pride the first game was held January 28th before a large crowd. Work is already underway to complete the kitchen facilities, dressing rooms, coaches room, library, four classrooms and stage. The potential for two additional classrooms is available at the stage end of the gym. Supervising, measuring, hammering, leveling, sanding, sweeping, and sawing. The ARA Pirates routed the Sea Island Academy Sun Devils by an impressive score of 63-36. The newly victorious Pirates were led in scoring by Walter Wrixon with 22 points and by Chris White bucketing 20. A full court press on the part of the Pirate defense was responsible for 15 steals during the game. A spirited crowd travelled with the Pirates to the home standing Sun Devils. A jubilant partisan following cheered the boys to their 31-18 halftime lead. In the locker room at the break there was hysterical screaming and yelling. Good play also in the second half built the lead. This allowed for valuable floor time experience on the part of the subs. One could feel the excitement building as the game wound down to the final minutes. As the seconds ticked down, a count down was started by the ARA fans, ten — nine — eight — seven — six — five — four — three — two — one. Then there was bedlam. Pirate fans rushed onto the floor in celebrafion. The net was cut down by ecstatic players hoisted on shoulders as a token of victory. Later that night on the Channel 5 news the first- ever win for the Pirates was given a spot. Walter Wrixon Hard Work Pays Off Jim and Kelly with a Newberry sandwich I'll never forget the first win. There was such a strong feeling of happiness. We had worked so hard and put in so much effort, a win was long over due. The enthusiasm had never been so strong. Even with all the losses we had still kept on rooting for our Pirates. When the last ten seconds shown on the score board it all became a reality. We were going to win this game! The crowd and all of us cheerleaders counted down those last ten seconds and as the end grew nearer and nearer the pure joy grew. Then the buzzer finally sounded and the whole place exploded. I cried. Others stood stunned, most hugged, the ballplayers were picked up, the net was cut, and everyone was absolutely thrilled. We won 33-30. It was very exciting. The crowd was screaming and beating the bleachers. In the last few seconds the crowd stood up and at the buzzer the whole team, coaches, and our fans ran onto the court. We were so excited. People were crying and laughing. It really felt good knowing we went out there and won. We played a good game and it was excited for the fans to watch. It was the first game won in our new gym. Joli Fort Lady Pirates defend goal Lynn from 16 feet No one stops Sarah Jayvees Make Debut My First Game We played basketball with St. Stephens and it was my first game. I thought we were going to win because they were shrimps, except for two of them. One of the two big ones had a moustache. I was watching from the bench when Mr. JL told me to go in and take the place of Pamma. When I went out, I didn't get the ball. All I could think about was the game and who would win. When we lost, I felt like fainting. But I didn't. Selwyn Dawsey Chad driving hard Kareem Abdul Hugh The Big Break The first time I played I broke my hand. The game was against the alumni team, the Daredevils. I jumped to catch a bad pass from another player and my finger hit it wrong. I heard it snap and I hollered in pain, but I kept going. There were ten seconds left on the clock. We had a foul called on us, so we took the free fhrows, and when the ball came down the second time, everyone jumped. Those Daredevils got it, of course. They came down fhe court at speeds that I didn't think those old men could run and put it right in the basket. The Daredevils won that game, but we will win the next one. Baseball games were long but fun to watch. The first time Pi- rates nine endured cold weather, swarms of gnats and long drives on country roads. They played hard and are looking forward to another season as hardened veterans. The field was made by the team and volunteer adults who scraped, leveled, fenced, and lined the former empty field into a regulation diamond over a weekend. The first game also marked the dedi- cation of the field to Mrs. Henri- etta McClellan, and will be known as Henrietta Field. Highlights of the season include Walter's Home run, hard fought games, running, happy chil- dren with snow-cone smears, and memories of clam chow- der. Ms. Henrietta McClellan cuts tape for first game on field dedicat- ed to her. It’s That Top Pirate Captains Larry and Jimmy land ashore Above Ellis and Rhett, Little Mr and Miss Shrimp Right chopping, peeling, slicing, and dicing for chowder Below End of line for Shrimp Parade Time Of Year Again The Annual Shrimp Festival The town of McClellanville is a small one. People there never pay much attention to the outside world; nor does the outside world give recognition to it, except for a certain day in May. The Shrimp Festival brings crowds of people from all parts to sample the tasty delicasies of shrimp platters and clam chowder, or to watch the Blessing of the Fleet and buy home made cross stitch samplers. This year on my plate I got forty shrimp, while last year I only got ten (even so, I relished each of the ten). Still, people don't just come for the shrimp, as the title might suggest, they come for the fun and good time the Shrimp Festival offers. This year's festival left with me impressions of bare-footed children darting in and out of the crowd, flyaway balloons stuck in trees, laughing people gesturing wildly, hectic, steamy women running the shrimp platter booth, and a general atmosphere of hot, happy people having a wonderful time.
