f atar Gardner Billing tori Dac. 7. I V70-S . 13, We dedicate this annual, Fathom ’87, to the memory of our friend, Peter Billington. These times cannot be the same without him, but we will never forget the times we had with him. He touched each of our lives in a different and special way. “Nothing said or done can bring him back to life And it hurts not to have known him more Friends come and friends go, but ... Best friends are a once in a lifetime thing — And it’s a risk everyone must take To make a best friend.” from a poem by MFS Archibald Rutledge Academy 4 1 McClollanvilU , South Carolina f Volume IX MORNINGS Summer Ends, School Starts, 4 year old Kindergarten, 5 year old K, First through Sixth Grade, Lunch and Breaks, 7th Grade, The Village, Eighth Grade, Faculty, High School, Superlatives and Seniors AFTERNOONS Final Bell, School's Out, Work and Play EVENINGS Basketball, Cheerleading WEEKENDS Spending the Night, Oyster Roasts, Parties, Cuttin’ the Vill, Shrimp Festival and Parade, School Ends, Summer Starts Summer Ends, School Starts Goodbye Hallo Jams Tee Shirts suntan surfboards bathing suits bare feet summer love ice cream fun beach trips jeans sweaters chapped lips skateboards long johns Reeboks true blue hot chocolate work field trips Summer Ends, School Starts . . . We have named ourselves the “Pirates'’. Nearly everybody comes to the home games and very often we have more fans in the stands than the “Home” team at away games. The Pirates made their hard court debut against the old Daredevils”. Youth and enthusiasm were not quite enough to overcome the years of experi- ence. In the rubber match the next week, the Pirates wore down the veterans and chalked up their first victory. As this publication goes to press the season is still underway so a season win-loss column is not available, but will probably reflect an ambitious start against well established teams who have been playing together for years. In a class essay, this third grader had this to say .. Basketball Games I like the basketball games because they are not related to work. I like to go to them because I would have and otherwise boring evening watch- ing Star Trek. Sometimes we get creamed but we’ll get better. yours truly Dorothy Baldwin Two's Comparo From Bad To Door The alarm brings the reality of another school day morn- ing. There is no choice but to rise and shine or the loud and too clear knock on the door will return and shake all sleep from your eyes. Mornings in my house are a stampede. Who will get the reward of the one hot show- er? Where is my left shoe? Is there any toothpaste left? What’s for breakfast? Gulp! Slurp! Choke! We eat to stop the annoying growl in our stomachs. When the last bites of breakfast are being eaten and the finishing touches put on one’s hair, Daddy gripes about the weather and Mom argues with your little sister about when she will ever put on her socks and shoes. Finally we all pile in the car, but before we begin on our way someone yells, “Wait! I forgot to brush my teeth!” Fourth Grada Six Is A Crowd Will Friday ever come? The recess lunch bells ring; teachers with the choice classrooms are literally run out of their rooms as students look for a suitable congregating place, with plenty of room for roughhousing or just sitting •around. The library is the favored place of the high school students and junior high has claimed the science room. On special occassions, the T.V. is secretly turned on for a quick five minutes of Young and the Rest- less , which goes unobserved by the teachers as they are always busy” in the teachers’ lounge, gossip as usual. Students are urged to go outside for fresh air or, on cold days, simply to have quiet. As the bell rings, to end either recess or lunch, there is a slow hesitation to go back to class. Then, all of a sudden, the halls come alive with pushing, shoving, crashing skateboards. D« Village Eighth Gradta Faculty Mors Than Teachers Teacher Say that on an average night the average amount of time that should be spent on the homework assigned is about one hour. Someone To Ctes r Ch« 5 rl od5 r3 T.G.I.F. Everyone loves the weekends. Plans must be made ahead to have just the right friend to spend the night. It’s fun to stay up late and to sleep late — but not so late you miss all the good cartoons. Karate lessons and horseback riding are other ways to spend a weekend. For teenagers weekends are the time for going out to a movie in town, cooking pizza at some- body's house, having a party — an oyster roast with lots of music and talking. Weekends A RECIPE FOR “CUTTING THE VILL” Editor’s Note: This recipe comes from one of our more notorious cutting the Vill” chefs but is based on a traditional one. Cruise slowly down your street until you turn the corner onto Kit Hall Road then cut in afterburner to see if trees on Skippers Point can stand the after- shock. Go in direction of “Government Dock” paying no heed to posted speed limits. If approached in the opposite direction by a friend pull this maneuver: flash brake lights, stop, back up and yell go to the government dock.” Once at the government dock area paying careful attention to irritating those nearby, stop, ask What’s going on tonight?” Answer is usually, I don't know. Guess I’ll see you around the village.” Then leave, slow down by Miz Mary’s until Mister Bob’s and then accelerate. Repeat above until out of gas. Cuffin' Tha Vill Pirates Parade Kick.
