James H. DuPre 1916-1979 One of McClellanville’s finest sons, James DuPre, was born at his family home, Palmetto Plantation. After graduating from the Citadel, he served as engineer with the United States Army and helped to build the Burma Road. Always a friend to McClellanville and education, Jimmy DuPre was among the concerned citizens who established the Archibald Rutledge Academy in 1973. In our first year, elementary school classes were held in the DuPre house in McClellanville. In the words of Governor James Edwards, “Jimmy DuPre’s love of God and country was unsurpassed. He was the most conscientious, honest and ethical man I have ever known.” It is, therefore, with sincere respect and affectionate remembrance that we dedicate this Fathom 1980 to our friend, Jimmy DuPre. 2
