Text from Pages 1 - 48 of the 1980 volume:

FATHOM 1980 Volume Two Archibald Rutledge Academy McClellan ville, S.C. A sunrise A beginning A rainbow A promise A blue sky A dream James H. DuPre 1916-1979 One of McClellanville’s finest sons, James DuPre, was born at his family home, Palmetto Plantation. After graduating from the Citadel, he served as engineer with the United States Army and helped to build the Burma Road. Always a friend to McClellanville and education, Jimmy DuPre was among the concerned citizens who established the Archibald Rutledge Academy in 1973. In our first year, elementary school classes were held in the DuPre house in McClellanville. In the words of Governor James Edwards, “Jimmy DuPre’s love of God and country was unsurpassed. He was the most conscientious, honest and ethical man I have ever known.” It is, therefore, with sincere respect and affectionate remembrance that we dedicate this Fathom 1980 to our friend, Jimmy DuPre. 2 f ■ w Headmaster — Thomas J. Fleming A. B. (Greek) College of Charleston; Ph. D. (Classics) University of North Carolina. Dr. Fleming, “Cap’n” of our crew, in addition to serving as Headmaster, teaches Latin and history courses. Dr. Fleming, editor of the “Southern Parti- san,” writes essays and book re- views and contributes to jour- nals around the world. Kindergarten: Sue Shaw Bagley rides herd on the smallest of shrimp in the school. She is frequently seen rescuing children from the water fountain and lead- ing them back and forth with a tow rope. First Grade: Olive B. Man- cil is one of our new crew members but a seaworthy veteran. She keeps the first grade in ship-shape condi- tion. t Second and Third Grade: Elizabeth Doss, another new crew member, sails along with her classes in tow. The second grade is especially famous for its stories and po- ems. Fourth and Sixth Grades: J. Heath Blake plots the course for the young sailors in his class and keeps the small fry in top notch condi- tion with on board calisthen- ics. Ellen Young charts our course in geography and tries to teach the rest of us com- munication via the English language. At 1400 hours she takes over as 1st officer of the Annual Staff. Patti L. McClellan steers her classes through compli- cated higher math courses. She also helps out with the Student Council. Third and Fifth Grade: Carolyn Dawsey dove into the year with the fifth grade and lately has netted the third grade in addition. Her class is studying navigation through star gazing and made models of the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria for Columbus Day. Donna Scott, known by all as “Miss Eel”, is our local in- structor in mathematics and science. In addition, she is Student Council advisor and “Mess Monitor.” Dolly W. Altman, other- wise known as “Miss Mad”, keeps the ship’s log while trying to improve communi- cations through typing. She is also technical supervisor for the Annual Staff. Nancy M. Morrison is chief supply and communi- cations officer. As secretary, she does a whale of a job or- ganizing and managing the wheelhouse. Elementary Poems Submitted For Fathom These are the three best poems we received from grades 1-6 during Spirit Week. Come And Go When we go to school, We have math. When we go home, We take a bath. When we go to school, We have reading. When we go home, We are singing. When we go to school, We have spelling. When we go home, We are yelling. When we go to school, We have history. When we go home, We read a mystery. £. - -o +Ke. )Wo.4- e. r Voun-hq y a t Julie Young A Day at A.R.A. I go to A.R.A., I get up early every day. I brush my teeth, And comb my hair, Mom picks my clothes to wear. I walk to school if there’s time. We stay outside until Mrs. Nancy Rings the chime. First reading and spelling, Then we take a break. When it rains the yard looks like a lake. After math and English, We have lunch. Everybody runs outside in a big bunch. Then science and history, What happens tomorrow, Will remain a mystery. Malcolm Baldwin A.R.A. Archibald Rutledge Academy, Is a good old school. We like to sing, We like to swing, And it is cool. Dr. Fleming is my favorite headmaster, How can I work faster? I hate to study. I like to talk to my buddy. Our school, small school, Great school.
