No- cona scored twice in the first half and defeated the Wildcats 14-0 in a non-conference contest. Electra was the next opponent. The Wildcats, remembering the '63 game, took the Tigers apart, scoring a decisive 19-0 victory over the AA club. Olney came to Wildcat Stadium on September 18 and played a tremendous ball game, downing the Wildcats 41-0. The Cubs amassed only 285 yards total offense, but took advantage of all Wildcat miscues to win. On October 2 the Wildcats opened the District 11 A race at Henrietta. Henrietta was picked to win the district, and the Wildcats had lost three straight years to them, including a loss for the District Championship in 1963. Archer City completely dom- inated the game and won 19-12. Arch-rival Holliday was the next opponent. The Wildcats trounced the Eagles 35-6 with reserves playing much of the contest. The Wildcats traveled to Paducah for the next district contest and defeated the Dragons 27-6 to remain undefeated in district play. Crowell, who had failed to score against the Wildcats in '62 and '63, came to Archer City on October 23rd. They were undefeated in district play, but the Wildcats continued their winning ways, defeating the Crowell eleven 21-6 in a fine hard-fought game. The Wildcats played Throckmorton next in a non-conference game and blasted the Greyhounds 27-14 at Throckmorton. On Nevember 6 the Wildcats played host to Knox City in an important District 11 A contest. Archer City, improving with each game, eliminated Knox City from the race 14-0. On Friday, November 13, before 2, 500 fans, the Wildcats (5-0) in District play tangled with the Munday Moguls (5-0) in District. Munday played inspired football, but the Wildcats, scoring 14 points in the second quarter, eliminated the Moguls 20-7 and won their first district championship in Texas Interscholastic League history. The District title, which they just missed in 63 was now theirs, won with great team effort in each district contest. On Friday, November 20, Archer City met Keller of District 12 A at Decatur for the Bi-District Championship. After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats came back strong, dominating the last half completely, and won 7-0. Abilene was the site of the Region II Championship game. The Goldthwaite Eagles, victorious over Baird in Bi-District, were the opponent. Trailing 6-0 at half- time, the Wildcats came back strong with 13 points, and defeated Goldthwaite 13-6 to advance to the Quarter-Finals. Clifton (12-0), a team that had allowed their opponents only 31 points, was the Wildcats Quarter-Final opponent. Arlington was chosen as the site of the contest. The underdog Wildcats scored on the second series of downs and took a 12-0 lead into the dressing room at halftime. Clifton came back strong, but the Wildcats, showing more poise with each game, repulsed the Cubs by a 26-14 score. It was the biggest offensive show for Archer City, who ground out 321 yards against one of the best defensive clubs in Texas. On Saturday afternoon, December 12, the Wildcats played the huge Big Lake Owls at Snyder. The Owls had won 12 games and lost only 1, that being to an AA club, Alpine. The experts were again giving the tiny Wildcats no chance to survive this Semi-Final test. Big Lake scored with 17 seconds remaining in the first half and led 6-0. The Wildcats, never beaten by anyone in the second half, came roaring back and scored early in the third quarter. The conversion was good and the underdog Wild- cats, playing tremendous defense the remainder of the game, pulled one of the biggest upsets in Texas Schoolboy Football History, defeating the Owls 7-6. The Wildcats, who weren't supposed to win their district, were now in the state finals. In Austin, Texas on the night of December 19, the Wildcats met the powerful Ingleside Mustangs who had won 13 games and lost only one, that being to a strong AA school. The Mustangs had won 35 of their last 39 games, and were heavy favorites to win this one. The Wildcats, improving with each game, scored 13 points in the second quarter, relied on their tough defense the rest of the way, and won the State Champion- ship 13-6. It was a tremendous team effort for the Archer City eleven, everyone was outstanding. The experts said it couldn't be done , but the magnificent Wildcats did it. This was the first time in recent history that a team that had won its district for the first time, also won the State Championship in its first try. This was a tremendous tribute to 21 dedicated youngsters, who although being underdogs almost every game, just wouldn't call it quits until they had accomplished what 200 teams in the A classifica- tion of Texas could not - the State Championship of Texas High School Football. Fullback Gary Tepfer was named to the Associated Press All-State team. Quarter- back Barry Morrison, End Barney Oliver, Tackle Billy Pitts, Junior Guard Robert Tepfer, and Gary Tepfer were selected on the 11 A All-District team.
