m 3J ARCHBOLD ARCHBOLD BLUESTREAK HIGH SCHOOL] OHIO The dedication of the yearbook is probably the single most important decision with which the year- book staff is confronted. The last Bluestreak which was dedicated was published over ten years ago. It was dedicated to outstanding individuals who have made important contributions to Archbold High School. We feel this is the criteria for the dedica- tion. In the past year, three members of the Board of Education and two teachers have resigned. The Board members which include Dr. William Neal, Mr. Paul Rupp, and Mrs. Arvah Siegel have served since the mid 1950's. The two retiring teachers are Mrs. Mildred Bernath and Mrs. Dorothy Spengler. Each of the retired Board members has contrib- uted particular improvements to the school. Col- lectively, they have accomplished an addition to the school building, a summer school program, and an enlargement of the curriculum, to mention only a few. DR. WILLIAM NEAL 2 MRS. ARVAH SIEGEL MRS. MILDRED BERNATH DEDICATION MRS. DOROTHY SPENGLER Mrs. Bernath has taught in Archbold for the last thirty- five years after teaching for one year at the Lorentz school in Franklin Township. While at Archbold, she has taught over 1100 kindergarten and first grade children. Mrs. Dorothy Spengler has been at Archbold for the last twenty- one years after teaching two years at a country school in Ridgeville Township, one year in Cleveland, three years in Ridgeville Corners, and four years at Elmira. The tenure and long list of i.accomplishments is not the reason for which we dedicate this book to these people. Rather, we dedicate this book to the realization these people have of the importance of education to young people, and that to meet this goal the school must always be aware of our changing world and improved educational techniques. The wise leadership which these people have contributed to the school should not soon be forgotten. 3 SUPERINTENDENT MR. J. H. SPENGLER Mr. Spengler has been associated with Archbold High School for twenty-nine years, and has been superintendent for eighteen of those years. Students who do not know Mr. Speng- ler personally should recognize him as the man behind the voice on the announcements. The superintendent is the business manager of the school. His responsi- bilities include ordering all books and supplies for the entire year, keeping the school properly staffed, organizing summer school activities, and handling any expenses which accumulate over the year. Mr. Spengler has also been active in educational organizations outside Arch- bold. He has been Vice-President and President of the Northwestern Ohio Edu- cator's Association. One of Mr. Spengler's favorite re- sponsibilities is attending the National Science Fair every spring. Rubinoff and admirer LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. J. H. The staff, through weekly meetings throughout the year organized the book into what they considered a mean- ingful panoramic and written description of the year's significant activities. The publication of the yearbook is an opportunity for students to use their talents in the areas of art, photography, creative writing, and organization. The staff proper is made up of seniors only. In order to prepare for the fol- lowing year's book, juniors are selected to serve an ap- prenticeship with the seniors. These juniors then begin planning their book in the spring of their junior year. The yearbook advisor is Mr. Schultz. 44 FIRST ROW: Julie Aldrich, Sharon Parker, Barbara Riegsecker, Susie Leupp, Carolyn Beck, SECOND ROW: Barb Grime, Anna Short, EDITOR IN CHIEF Karen Sauder, Mike Eash, Rollie Britsch, Marianne Win zeler, Sandy Dilyard, Mrs. Keim ARCHETTE HAS SOMETHING FOR ALL Friday morning in the Archette office The Archette was first published over 25 years ago. The purpose of the Archette today is the same as it was a quarter of a century ago: to inform the students of the school activities, to entertain the students, and to pro- mote school spirit. The Archette is published by the journalism class, composed of fourteen students this year, who are taking journalism in place of senior English. These students publish the paper every other week. Much work and effort went into the Archette this past year. The students spent many hours in preparing and publishing it. Their sufficient reward was the enthusiasm with which the paper was greeted on its day of distri- bution. The advisor is Mrs. Keim. 45 STUDENT COUNCIL HELD IN HIGH REGARD FIRST ROW: Mr. Dilbone, B. Fielitz, D. Rychener OFFICERS: Judy Springer, Secretary-Treasurer; Duane Fielitz, President; Becky Schrock, Vice President Mr. Burkholder and several senior students set up the council. Its purpose is to help control the student body by setting rules for hall traffic, study halls, and cafeteria lines. The council also organized the cheerleader elections, the chapel programs the sportsm an ship pro- grams, and decorated the school at Christmas time. The council consists of elected mem- bers of each class, seven through twelve. 46 The Archbold Chapter of the National Honor So- ciety was started in 1951 under the supervision of Mr. Burkholder, the student council, and a panel of teachers. Later in the year of 1950-51, the Bryan National Honor Society inducted seven seniors and eight juniors who became the first members of the new Archbold Chapter. Since then, the membership of the Archbold National Honor Society has increased to two hundred and five, including the nineteen new members inducted on April 14, 1966. To be eligible, a student must be in the upper 25% of his class. Membership is decided by a secret ballot from each of the eleven teachers of the com- mittee. Honor Society members relax after formal induction ceremony. HONOR SOCIETY HONORS SCHOLARS FIRST ROW: B. Zimmerman, P. Leichty, J. Buehrer, M. Stememan, E. Yoder, S. Finley. SECOND ROW: A. Holian, D. Pre- vious to this time the school had an orchestra. The band became a popular group and after the purchase of uniforms, the orchestral program was discontinued. Mr. Parlett was the director of the band program at this time. It was during the time when Mr. Frank Menichetti was director of the group that the band became very active in solo and ensemble work and district and state competitive events. There was tremendous growth in the personnel and instrumentation of the group. The band did outstanding work and over a period of years has ammassed an unusual record of Superior ratings at district and state levels. 60 FIRST ROW: B. Schrock, K. Link, D. Frey, C. Clark, S. Jim Cox, who moved to Archbold from Paulding early in the season, helped to unify a team of high potential. The streaks moved on to an uncontested league crown. As the team entered tournament play, fans were looking towards a trip to Colum- bus. The sectional tournament proved a little tough going, but the team made it. Holgate then ended Archbold's 20 game winning streak and tournament play in an exciting overtime game. Both the reserve and freshmen team compiled a 13-3 record and the junior high a 12-3 record. For these two years students may choose from the following: physical science, biology, physiology, chemistry, and physics. The freshmen are restricted to biology or a physical science course. The tenth grade physical science is gen- erally taken as a terminal course in the sciences. Chemistry, physics, and physiol- ogy are the college prep courses. Stanley Buehrer B.S. Ohio Northern U. M.S____U. of Illinois 93 Two years of mathematics are required for graduation from high school. College bound students choose from algebra I, algebra II, geometry, and college math. These college preparatory courses stress heavily the theory of mathe- matics and some applications beyond the scope of the book and the stu- dents. A general course in math is also offered for the non-college- oriented student. This course stresses the practical applications of mathematics. Thomas Schultz B.S. Practically all masters and doctor- ate degrees require knowledge of at least one foreign language for all candidates. Archbold is fortunate in having both a Spanish and Latin departments. These courses give students a knowledge of the language as well as knowledge of ancient Rome and Spain. Gayle Bourquin B.S.—B.G.S.U. Jack Miller B.A. Adrian College GOVERNMENT History is the record of the past since civilized man. History is be- ing made daily and the past is also being uncovered daily. History is actually the test of the trial and error system. Ohio history, geography, world history, American history, and gov- ernment are the courses which are given at Archbold High School. World history, American history, and government are required by all students. Jacob Burkholder B.S., A.B., Adrian College, M.A., B.G.S.U. 98 99 MUSIC Instrumental music is offered at Archbold High School to give students an opportunity to perform in large groups, ensemble groups, and solo performances. Students are exposed to mu- sic theory, harmony, and music appreciation. The course is taught so that students will not only be good in performance but will also be alert, sensitive listeners. The repetoire of the group is selected in such a way that students will become aware of the various periods in music history and the style of music which is characteristic of that period. There is an at- tempt to relate music to the other arts and to make it part of the humanities. Many voice teachers say that everyone has the ability to sing. This opinion appears to be verified at Archbold High School, where over 50% of the students sing in at least one of the choruses. The purpose of the vocal department is to introduce the students to the various kinds of music and to develop each individual's sing- ing ability. Charles Winzeler B.M. At the high school level, students are helped to develop a respect and an appreciation for all types of artistic expression, past and present, through individual experimentation with various media. Home economics is a course designated for girls only. Its purpose is to promote an appreciative understanding of family life in the home. Leadership and the satisfac- tion of being an individual are two fundamental goals. Family life, child care, meals, and housing, are some of the topics covered in the course. THE ARTS 101 AGRICULTURE AND INDUSTRIAL ARTS Glenn Gallaway B.S. Ohio State U. Vocational agriculture and industrial arts develop technical skills and a sense of indi- vidualism. This program is offered to fresh- men through seniors. The students learn by doing. Vocational agriculture motivates the stu- dent to further advancement in farming. The subject areas include crop business, animal science, and agricultural mechanics. Industrial arts is a course majoring in woodworking and metal works. The student experiences working with others and shop cooperation. The awareness of fine work- manship and completion of a satisfactory job are priceless values of personal achieve- ment. The physical education program includes education in all these areas. All students are given an opportunity to participate in games and activities that develop the physical body. Through this activity students are giv- en the opportunity to meet and work with other stu- dents. Participation to the fullest extent requires emotional control, and acquiring an understanding of rules for each sport. The physical education program includes archery, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, softball, soccer, table tennis, track and field, tumbling, and volley- ball. 103 Mrs. Treadway sings with one of her classes Mr. Hoblet with Spelling Bee runners-up And it tastes good, too Future State Champs PRINCIPAL The elementary school principal provides in- structional leadership for the personnel in his building.
