Religious Leaders His Holiness Pope John Paul II His Eminence John Cardinal Krol, D.D., J.C.D. Reverend Msgr. Paul Curran Vicar for the Office of Catholic Education 8 In January, 1984, the faculty and students extended a warm welcome to Reverend Gerald Canavan. Since that time, Father Canavan has served the Kennedy community in his leadership position of principal. Father has sought to enhance the academic per- formance of the student body. At the same time, he has reminded the students of their dignity as persons. On several occasions Father has stressed the im- portance of pride and determination in all facets of A. K.'s life. Father's spirit and dedication can be seen in his personal presence in the building and in his sup- portive role on the sidelines of extracurricular ac- tivities. Father Canavan, we are happy that within such a short period of time you have become a special part of our Special K. ARCHBISHOP ENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL Nurturing the development of our Christian and in- tellectual growth is our faculty's specialty. In ad- dition, their interest in our extracurricular activities parallels their spiritual and scholastic vision for us. Our academic courses educate and transform us from pupils to students Academics 23 Religion Periodically throughout the year. we. the students, are given the opportunity to go to confession. Since this process involves an en- tire length of a religion period, most students are willing to take advantage of the situation. However, the class participates in a preparation ceremony which puts us in the proper frame of mind. Upon the conclusion of this brief ritual, row by row we file out of the room and are forced to engage ourselves in the dilemma of choosing the best line. As we approach those awaiting their turn, we all gaze at the signs above us which have the priests' names on them. Lost in total confusion and bewilderment, we attempt to make the proper choice, aware of the im- portance of our decision. After we have spent enough time basing our decision on just the sound of each name, we simply either select the longest line or choose to wait in the line with a best friend. The worst part, though, has to be the ner- vousness everyone experiences right before going into confession. Fortunately, our priests are friendly and brief which allows us to be ab- solved of both our anxiety and sins. Father McKeaney shares with the students his knowledge of Christian Morality. Joe Westerfer reflects on questions in Religion class. Sophomores learn New Testament. 24 25 English My Junior year English class was spent in a room with nine other students and the teacher. We were an honors class, and this meant we could, suppossedly handle much more work. Well, we took on much more work, much more reading, much more writing, and much more thinking. I think our toughest assignments were the quarterly term papers. Our teacher expected college level material. I’m not sure I gave her college level material, but I felt the pressure. The Honors English course was very good for me, though. I realized I could take on all the work and do quite well. I got a taste of what college will be like. I did not care for it at first, but in the end I know I benefitted from all the assignments. Gina discusses Beowolf with the class. (top left) The Sophomores take notes on the parts of speech. The Sophomores take notes on American literature. early 27 The Juniors discuss writing techniques in Honors English. Language Spanish class brings back memories. I will never forget the Spanish luncheon we had at Don Quixote’s Restaurant. The spicy at- mosphere filled the whole dining area. We ate many varieties of food including chicken, fish, and beef. It was good, but I'll stick with American. When our feast was finished, we ob- served a flamenco dancer. She discussed the history of the art and even pulled a student on stage to help her perform. It was an enjoyable day, providing me with a flavor of Spain, and I didn’t have to worry about drinking the water. (top right) The French language becomes alive in Room 307. This class was unlike any other in the school. Instead of a regular textbook, Time magazine was used. Each Tuesday I looked forward to receiving my copy. Time was full of interesting articles and colorful pictures. Each day I learned something new; this class was never boring. Seriously, this course kept me up-to-date on world issues that affect all of us. The year I had the course. Americans were held hostage in Iran and the United States welcomed a new president. Everyone in my class discussed topics like these and formed their 'personal biases.” I really learned a lot that year because it was a stimulating class. (top right) Mr. McElhone's Western Studies class learns the basics of Greek Philosophy. (above) Mr. McElhone checks his information to make sure it is up-to-date. (below) At the head of every good World Cultures class, there stands a teacher. (bottom) Cindy Greidus points out the correct answer to Felix McKeogh. 31 Science At 8:22 the frenetic freshman team walks through the door into room 101 into a state of disarray and they become unwilling captives for eight class periods. They are reminded that it will be better for them if they cooperate and do their job correctly. Reluctantly, the partners put on their aprons and goggles and approach their fearless leader. He patronizingly presents them with that renowned mixture and orders them to begin working. The stench emanating from the black, slimy, dense substance, dif- fuses throughout the room, even throughout the school. No one is safe. The times passes quickly, almost too quickly. The two partners compare data and surprisingly nothing matches. Panic sets in, but the team regains their composure. They will not be defeated. They made the necessary adjustments and proceed to identify the numerous liquids and solids to the best of their ability. The bell sounds to end that dreaded day. Most were suc- cessful, but some were not. All were weary both mentally and physically. The freshmen were glad it was over and couldn’t wait to get back to civilization, but they all agree — they’ll never forget the day they took the infamous sludge test. Math The questions most students ask about math are Why do we have to learn this?” and What good will this do us?” These are answered in Sophomore Geometry when everyone becomes an architectural engineer. The project: draw a perfectly scaled floor plan of your house. The painstaking task begins at the opening of the third quarter. Rulers, tape measures, pencils and paper are searched out in order to start. Af- ter weeks of poking and prodding in each room of the house and taking their measurements and converting them to a scale, it is complete. Larry Swanson attempts to make the perfect Sine Curve in Trig Analytic Geometry. Seniors. Chris Bums. Kathy Borden, and Mike Brauckmann. learn the Math of the Future. 34 The Juniors of Algebra II learn the rules of power from Miss Ratigan. Beth and Larry meet the challenge of Trig Analytic Geometry. Freshmen have their first experience with high school math. Joe Verna's one word answer makes Mr. Corrado ponder for awhile. 35 Business The field of business at Kennedy is a widely- studied area among Sophomores. Juniors, and Seniors. Many students choose the excitement of General Business, the ease of Stenography, the precision and accuracy of Accounting, and the swiftness of Typing. These courses turn out each year the future business men and women of the world. If only we could remember which side the debits are on and which side the credits are on, not to mention the proper way to file an income tax form. The real problems arise in Stenography when we can t keep up with the transcribing machine. However, if we can just stop hitting the return key instead of the semicolon in typing, we ll be all right. With hope and practice, it won't be long before we are tomorrow s executives. (top right) Juniors learn the fundamentals of typing. (above) Sue Monaghan demonstrates her typing ability. (left) Typing II students increase their speed. Mrs. Sue Davenport speaks on career development. Typing II students practice diligently. Karen Farrell is attentive to the newness of accounting. Juniors concentrate. 37 Mike Conicello and Fred D'Angelo smile as they work. Art To create, to express, to show the world how you feel . . . that's what Art is all about. During the year our art work accumulates until Fine Arts Week when our creativity runs rampant throughout the halls of A.K. Everywhere you turn you see a Hodgepodge of masterpieces, from a charcoal James Dean to a pen and ink old fisherman. It is finally the chance for all of our young, aspiring artists to get the recognition they deserve. Joe Downey and John Bergan work hard on their drawings. Physical Education The Phys Ed classes at Kennedy are ex- periences of action and variety. There are many games such as Basketball. Speedball. Hockey. Football, and English handball. During these games the action really gets fierce. Gym is a time to have fun and also a time to let off some steam. Although it is a time of en- joyment, the games are very competitive. Everyone takes pride in being on the winning team. (right) Another Kennedy individual who stands high above the crowd. (below) Think it'll make me any taller? (bottom) Only sissies jump rope? Ken- nedy's underclassmen of today will become fine school leaders of tomorrow. Underclassmen Dennis E. Aaron Christine M. Amento Marisa Balestra John P. Bergan Jeffrey J. Bernstein Valerie A. Wherever your interest lies, Kennedy offers a wide variety of activities in which every student can be involved. Sister Alice directs the activities' program in a special way that will lead our school to a brighter future. Ring Day On March 7. 1983. the class of 1984 gathered together with their families and friends to receive their school rings. The ceremony consisted of a liturgy celebrated by Father McKeaney and the distribution of the rings. It was the first event that the Seniors remembered as a step forward as future leaders of A.K.H.S. The memory of that unique day will live within us and the ring will continue to serve as a reminder of happy high school days. Always, the ring will be worn with pride. Father J. McKeaney gives his blessings to the congregation. Mr. Purcell presents the rings to the students. The families of the students wait proudly as the procession is lead in by John Capizzi, the flag bearer, and Paul Colombaro, the cross bearer. When I attended my first Homecoming football game at Ken- nedy. I tried to imagine myself out on the field at halftime. What an honor, I thought; then again — what a dream! Well on October 28. 1983. my dream came true as Debbie Slawek crowned me with a ring of white carnations and baby breath. The weekend began with the traditional parade down Fayette Street: decorated convertibles, floats filled with students, and mascots running wild. Then onto the big game. Afterward, the post-game party. Before the Saturday Night Homecoming Dance, the court and their escorts dined at Benningan’s. All of us agreed that it was a fantastic weekend; one that I especially will never forget. And, as Janice repeated quite frequently. Everybody was Happy! The DJ was Power 99. and they had everybody jumping all night. When the dance concluded, the students remarked on the success of the evening — the 'feast of hearts'' had been fun. The event occurred within a liturgy, with Father Tom Heron as main celebrant. The May Court, comprised of seven- teen Seniors, showed their reverence to the Blessed Mother by laying candles and flowers at her feet. A lovely crown of carnations was placed on Mary by the May Queen. Nancy Stagliano. Also honored at the ceremony was Mr. David Tomlinson, who has taught at Ken- nedy for twenty-five years. His wife. Mem- bership involves a constant participation. One of the goals is to establish a rapport between the students and faculty. The students meet on Mon- days under the direction of Sister Rosemarie, and they plan community and school events. During the year the members served the community by the Poor Man's Supper, the Thanksgiving Drive, and the Paradise School for Boys' Project. At A.K.H.S.. activities are scheduled, varying from Homecoming celebrations to Candy Kiss Day. Cast and Curtain The 1983-84 school year marks the third anniversary of the Cast S Curtain Company. This organization began with the One Act Play Festival in the spring of '82. No one expected this group to flourish as well as it did. but if you get a group of kids that really want something bad enough and two moderators, Ms. Gail Ciociola and Mr. Peter Marino, who really care, you can accomplish anything . . . and we did. The group now hosts various activities: Coffeehouses; workshops in acting, mime, playwriting, yoga, poetry and improvisations; film nights; and field trips to New York and McCarter Theater. All the groups activities take place in their remade Booster Hall. “No matter what has happened or has not happened there at rehearsals and workshops, no matter how homespun grass roots our home in this building might be. we consider ourselves lucky and special to belong to one another in the Cast Curtain Company family. From the first whistle to the final out. the athletes pursued excellence on the field, on the track, and on the court. 86 Bicentennial League Champs The 1983 football season was a total team effort which com- pensated for the lack of superstars. Every victory was a result of the Saints combining their spirit, pride, and talents. The team once again was led by Coach Bockrath. whose outstanding dedication and con- cern for every team member brought overwhelming success. The un- defeated Saints won their third consecutive Bicentennial League Championship and finished first in the area in total offense and defense. Perhaps the sweetest victory was the defeat of Roman, since this was the first Saints' football team to do so. Along with these many accomplishments, the senior members proudly possess the complete collection of championship jackets: blue, gray, and white, which sum up their achieved goals and successes. Great job, Guys! The bomb is dropped, and it badly damages P.W.'s defense. John glides over the opposition. (above) Some professional form is demonstrated by Joe. The enthusiasm and explosive offense of the team made them fun to watch. It was clear that this team was destined for great things. At the beginning of the season it was evident that their potential was unlimited. It didn't take long before Kennedy became known as a powerhouse in the league. These pre season predictions proved to be right. The Saints had a highly successful season. They won the Spring- ford Holiday Tournament and finished the season with a 20- 3 record. This achievement earned them second place in the Bicentennial League. The team's successes have made the Kennedy community very proud of them and their untiring efforts. The spirit, deter- mination. and character of the girls, coupled with the direction of Coach Charles Corrado, were factors that added to the team’s innate ability. The outcome of any of their games, whether it was a victory or a defeat, in- dicated that the Lady Saints had struggled to do their best. Cathy looks for help.
