Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1968 volume:

archbishop kennedy high school conshohocken, Pennsylvania volume II foreword What’s it all about? Books? Yes, that’s a part of it. Marks? Well, yes, that’s a part of it, too. Games and dances? Sure, they play a major role. But what I mean is .. . what’s it REALLY all about? High school isn’t only tests and social activities. It’s life. It’s growing up. It’s you. And the memories that come with high school are a part of you, too. And these memories are intangible. The pictures in this yearbook are only visual aids, yet they have the power to awaken and bring alive those long-forgotten, precious moments that can’t be held in your hand. . . only in your heart. 2 contents ---------------10------------FACULTY--------- ----22--------STUDENT--------------LIFE------ -------ACTIVITIES-------38------------------- ---------------------------CLUBS--------62--- -SPORTS--------78---------------------------- -------------------SENIORS-------- 06-------- HIS EMINENCE. JOHN CARDINAL KROL. Archbishop of Philadelphia Though no one ever hears about them, the administrators al- ways get their pictures in Catholic high school yearbooks. No one bothers to record their hard work and long hours, though, for it is much easier to record a picture than a great deed. It's about time that we recognize these merits, for the administrators are the foundation of our school system, the brain be- hind the body, the action behind the desire. Without them. Catholic students would be receiving their education in a four-room school- house. The administrators make education a Catholic duty ... a Catholic privilege ... a Catholic tool. Yes, we owe them so much—- yet we have so little space to pay our debt. HIS EXCELLENCY. THE MOST REVEREND GERALD V. McDEVITT. D.D.. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia HIS EXCELLENCY. THE MOST REVEREND JOHN J. GRAHAM. D.D.. Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia 6 THE RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR EDWARD T. HUGHES. Superintendent of Schools THE RIGHT REVEREND MONSIGNOR FRANCIS B. SCHULTE. Assistant Superintendent of Schools administrators THE REVEREND PAUL F. CURRAN. PH.D.. Assist- ant Superintendent of Schools THE REVEREND DAVID E. WALLS. PH.D.. Assist- ant Superintendent of Schools 7 When a man devotes his time and his every effort to a single cause, that's called dedication. But when a man is so wrapped up in a cause that he becomes a part of it. that’s called Father McCloskey. The pro- moter of Kennedy All The Way is a zealous and tireless worker who knows no 8-hour day: for him. his day almost invariably stretches far into the night. Father introduced the first guitar Mass in the history of our school . . . this was his appeal to the students to participate in the “Spirit of Vatican II.” He urged greater attendance at school games and other activities . . . this was his appeal to the students to participate in the “Spirit of Kennedy.” In attempting to isolate Father McCloskey as the Principal of the Year,” the Kencensus staff dedicates the 1968 yearbook to him. This is only a small token of Archbishop Kennedy's gratitude and apprecia- tion for all that he has done for us. Father McCloskey ... we salute you! faculty what’s it... ...all about MR. DAVID P. TOMLINSON—Calm and unruffled in the face of such crises as double liabilities and meager assets. Mr. Tomlinson runs his Bookkeeping I and II. and Business Law classes with the efficiency of an office. He also introduces freshmen to the wonders of foreign lands through his World Culture class. Mr. Tomlinson coaches the track and cross-country teams during his spare time, and is recognized throughout the school as the “Heart of the Harriers.” SISTER MARIA VIRGINIA—Although a newcomer. Sister has shown her students that she means business. She keeps her Latin I and Latin II classes going at a steady pace with plenty of work. Sister is also assistant disciplinarian, and. as director of the Boys’ Glee Club. Sister is Sister St. Paul’s sergeant-at-arms. SISTER LEONITA—Short story analysis and good grammar exercises are but two of Sister’s never-ending tasks. Besides drilling her freshman classes on the finer points of the English lan- guage. Sister is also moderator of the newly- formed literary magazine. MR. PHILIP FIDALGO—A recent addition to Kennedy’s teaching staff. Mr. Fidalgo has earned his weight in gold. He so carefully details and explains all the mysteries of Geometry and Algebra II that his stu- dents actually know what they are learning. He has also formed the valuable and indispensable audio-visual club for boys. SISTER LILLIAN—Sister is well known for her determination in teach- ing her senior English classes the great literary works of both the past and present. She has not completely given up on spelling and correct punctuation, but Heaven knows it’s a lost cause. Sister Lillian is also moderator of the yearbook staff . . . need we say more? Y FATHER LADISLAUS J. RYCZEK—Every day Father turns his Religion II class into a bat- tleground . . . minus the heavy artillery. He throws a loaded statement among the students, and it explodes into a heated debate. Although Father is greatly engrossed in his efforts to draw fire, he is always on hand in the Guidance Office to give advice and aid to any who seek it. SISTER KATHLEEN MARITA—Under Sisters watchful eye. the newspaper always manages to get out four times a year. And. because of her watchful eye. the Mirror last year obtained first honors in a nationwide rating service. Sister also displays her unique talent as a teacher in her Office Practice. Typ- ing I. and Typing II classes. FATHER JOSEPH A. SCHNORR—“All right, today we're going to have another quickie!” Although famous for both his “quickies” and his “tickets.” Father spends more time an- swering the pressing problems of today’s Catholic youth in his Religion III and IV classes than he does writing detentions. Occasionally. Father shows movies to instruct his students in the Christian way of daily living, but to do this. Father says one must respond to his urgent plea—“Bring in more green stamps . . . please?” SISTER JULIAN IMMACU- LATA—“Frogs and snails and puppy dog tails . . That’s not what Sister is made of. though. She merely uses them as teaching aids in her biology and IPS classes. Using nature as her text- book. Sister makes science more than words—she makes it fun. SISTER MARIE DAVIDICA—Though it is often said that history repeats it- self. students of United States History and Problems of Democracy firmly believe that history-makers never do the same thing twice. They do believe that history is interesting, though, because Sister teaches through discussion and not just facts. MR. JOHN J. DABAGIAN—His playful jibes and sharp wit play an important part in his teaching methods, for he makes sure that learning is not all work, but some play. Teaching Spanish I. Latin II. and French III takes up most of his day. but Mr. Dabagian still finds time to coach the junior varsity basketball team and the base- ball team. He is also assistant disciplinarian. FATHER PASQUALE R. CATULLO—His freshman religion classes sit in awe as Father hypnotizes them with stories of saintly men and women. Father’s twinkling eyes attract students of all ages to the cluttered, minis- cule room which he calls the Athletic Office. Besides head- ing the Athletic Department. Father is also moderator of the exclusive photography club. MR. JOSEPH D. MUR- RAY—Well-known for his slave-driving tactics and esot- eric tests. Mr. Murray found out this year what it’s like to be on the other side of the desk. Working on his thesis for his Master’s degree, he frequently had to post- pone his famous quizzes un- til a later date. His World Culture and Problems of De- mocracy students didn’t mind too much, though, because Mr. Murray made learning world culture and the na- tion’s problems interesting through frequent group dis- cussions. SISTER ST. PAUL—Sister teaches English II this year, and insists that she was really a teacher before she became a music director. Although her ability as a teacher is not questioned. Sister is better known for her accom- plishments in the field of music. In fact Sister is so adept at conducting the orchestra and glee clubs that many feel she deserves the “Golden Finger” award. MR. EDWARD A. GIVNISH—His phys ed class works out in the gym for what seems to them to be eternities; his modern European history classes have found that other countries besides ours have an im- pressive past. Mr. Givnish is best known, hosvever. for his great success in coaching our varsity basketball team. Under his careful tutelage, the boys on the squad always go “all the way.” SISTER CATHARINE ANITA—Sister is the mainstay of our Commercial Depart- ment. Using the latest in office equipment. Sister instructs her typing and stenography classes in the values of speed and efficiency. Sister is also moderator of the business club. SISTER AGNES De SALES—Teaching mechanical drawing is but one of Sister's many jobs. Teaching World Culture and Russian history are two more. But still her work is never done. Sister is in charge of our school book store and is responsible for many more important articles which are being sold there this year. SISTER ALOYSIUS GONZAGA— Je m appelle . . . No need for introductions. Everyone knows Sis- ter’s name, for she is well known not only for her proficiency in speaking, but also for her intricacies of the French language. Sister is also moderator of the French club, the world affairs club, and the junior and senior debate clubs. SISTER RITA ALOYSIA—Sister is familiar to many stu dents as a “walking computer. and her Math III and IV pupils can attest to that fact. Axioms and laws are second nature to Sister. But there is another side to this efficient and mathematical nature. Sister is also head of the Studies Office, where anyone who is interested in fuithering his career either academically or commercially may apply for help. SISTER ANNE CHARLES—Sister’s soft voice and serene attitude are one of her many fine assets. Her capability in teach- ing French I. English II. and English III is another one. Sis- ter’s calm character belies this drive and zeal for teaching. Sister is also moderator of the school chapter of the National Honor Society. MRS. CATHERINE TERPELUK—“All right, girls, walk, don’t run!” Any Kennedy girl would recognize these memor- able words. Mrs. Terpeluk is famous, or infamous, for her grueling exercises, and many a girl has whooped for joy when the above admonition was given. Under her able guidance, however, the girls’ basketball team has been a winning team for several years. MR. JOSEPH F. DOWD— Teaching Religion III is his inspiration: running the Dis- cipline Office is his aspira- tion. These two enormous jobs are certainly time-con- suming. but Mr. Dowd is always eager to listen to complaints or plaudits where the good of the school is concerned. SISTER MARY CORNELIUS—Although many sophomores don’t know it. English is the national language. Sister has attempted to prove this in her English II class, but it is well-known that sopho- mores are a hard-to-convince lot. Sister is also the school librarian and makes available the most appeal- ing and absorbing books that she can find. SISTER MAXINE—Her working day is filled with projects and prob- lems, yet Sister is never too tired to help the Student Council achieve its goal of better student-teacher relations. She instructs classes in general science. Home Economics I and II. and family living, yet Sister always makes sure that the Student Council is doing its job. No. Sister isn’t president . . . but the all-important advisor. SISTER MARY JUDE—The ‘‘Albert Einstein” of Archbishop Ken- nedy. Sister Mary Jude does not plan to blow up the school. Contrary to students’ opinion, she wishes to teach general science, physics, and chemistry instead of dynamite ingredients and LSD composites. Sister attempts to impress the laws of science on the impressionable minds of future scientists. MR. JOHN F. DIAMOND—You may think that learning math is un- bearable. but no one has a poorer lot than Mr. Diamond. He has to teach Algebra I and Math IV to dozens of students who know more about the Monkees and Zorba the Greek than they do about the hypotenuse of a triangle. Mr. Diamond has more to his credit than penetrating feeble, anti-math brains, however. For three years he has piloted the girls’ soft- ball team to victory after victory. 19 MR. ROMEO GIGLIOTTI—Peeking out from the furnace room. pushing a large, light blue barrel, or decorating the door of the Custodial Department. Romeo is sure to have a warm smile and a friendly greeting for all. MRS. JEANNE GREB—Known as “Mrs. Kenrick.” this warm, friendly woman would rather switch (to Kennedy) than fight. Always ready to lend a helping hand. Mrs. Greb can be found in the business office five days a week. MRS. MARGARET RENDLER—She may be only a part-time secretary, but more important. Mrs. Rendler is definitely a full-time Kennedyite. She works in the busi- ness office two days a week and is always willing to help any students who need information. MRS. MAUREEN COFFEY — No. her name is not Igor Stravinsky. It’s Mrs. Coffey, as everyone in the orchestra knows, for this energetic woman has made many appearances as a guest conductor at Kennedy. She also teaches the orches- tra's string section. MRS. CATHERINE CHAMPAGNE—The lady with the quick smile and soft voice is a valuable asset to our school. Besides working part-time in the business office. Mrs. Cham- pagne is also secretary of the Booster Association. CAFETERIA SERVICE—Mm-m-m! The aroma coming from the kitchen promises good food at fair prices. Thanks to the kitchen staff. Mrs. V. Clark. Mrs. E. VanBuskirk. Mrs. C. McAvoy. Mrs. E. Riley, students are assured of the kind of food that tastes like Mom's. MR. J. CARROLL McCLOSKEY—Romeo’s right hand. Mr. McCloskey is responsible for many of the fine car- pentry jobs gracing the faculty dining room. He is also an all-around handyman, and. like his son. an avid Ken- nedy promoter. Kennedy resounds with a hearty thank- you to this man who unselfishly gives of his spare time so that others may enjoy the beauty and comfort of his work. is it just,.. ...for the moment live a kennedyite is: • A part of a world far wider than a class- room. • A detention-dodger. • A thinker who wants more than answers. • A weary worker. • A person who makes God a part of himself each day. • An advocate of “Ken- nedy All The Way.” • The searcher of TO- DAY; the founder of TOMORROW. “But. Walls could not be seen because of gaudy signs that decorated them, and the enthusiasm of each candidate filled the corridors. What race are we talking about? Well, none other, of course, but the Student Council elections. It was a tough battle until the very end. Each candidate had a firm platform, and each was convinced that he was the best for the job. It was a hard decision for the voters, but on May 24 the votes were tabulated. At the installation the four new officers assumed their offices. The outgoing officers had mixed emotions. They wish they could go on serving our school, but they knew that the council was left in good hands for 1969. 48 The newly elected officers: (I. to r.) J. DiPietro. President: M. F. Enoch.
