r,.ar POPE JOHN XXIII Reigized 1958 - 1965 THE BELOVED PQPE UF UNITY . . .ever concerned more with that which unites than with that which divides . . , ' During the past year we have gazed upon the vacant places of two men-one: the Visible Head of the Church and the Chief Executive of our country. Many eulogies have been written and many speeches made, but very few words are needed to bring one to the remembrances of the sorrow felt when official announcement con- firmed suspicions of Pope john XXIII's fatal illness, and the shocked disbelief when the first news came of the sudden death of President john Fitzgerald Kennedy. Each of these men was in his position of awesome responsibility for a short duration, but during this time his influence was tremendous. Through the youthfulness in spirit of the gentle pastor Pope john, and the youth- fulness in reality of john Kennedy, an imprint of their personalities was stamped on their governments. The tragedy is that, having begun so much, they were not permitted to see the fruits of their labor-only the first faint buds.
