CLIFFORD M. SOREM, Principal A great deal of emphasis is now being placed on the preparation and Training of personnel for scientific research. This research has released tremendous phy- sical forces, forces which in the hands of re- sponsible men can be used to improve living standards for all people. The same forces when controlled by despotic, ambitious and irresponsi- ble people lead to slavery and destruction. A strengthened and renewed program in the humanities and the science of man with emphasis on literature, history, philosophy, re- ligion, psychology, sociology and anthropology should parallel the new interest in training for the physical sciences. The objective of such a renewed emphasis would be to help man to live more harmoniously with his neighbor and to prevent him from dissipating the maior portion of his energy and his resources on de- fense and war. The humanities is not iust another area for specilization but should be part of the program of universal education. Such a program would encourage a broad liberal education for every- one -and should make a strong contribution to freedom and to world peace. MICHAEL CHETKOVITCH, Vice Principal Education determines to a large extent the kind of life you will lead. lt is an important factor in the type of work you will do, the amount of money you will make, the type of person you will marry, and the sort of person you will be. Too many students drop out of high school every year because of personal or school prob- lems. Most of them regret their decision within a few years and have taken on obligations so that further education is not possible.
