The purpose of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) is to prepare leadership in the world of work; it is also designed to unite, in a common bond, all students enrolled in trade, industrial, technical, and health education. Also, it fosters a deep respect for the dignity of work, assists students in establishing realis- tic vocational goals, and helps stu- dents attain a purposeful life. VICA arouses within the students an enthu- siasm for learning and for promoting high standards in trade ethics, work- manship, scholarship, and safety. The Arcadia Valley Chapter of F.H.A. traveled to Cape Girardeau on October 17 to participate in the Region 6 F.H.A. meeting. The theme for the meeting was Team Up with F.H.A.'' F.H.A. plans monthly meetings. Such as, a Valentine's Day party for Head-Start, an Easter egg hunt for Elementary students, and distributing books at Christmas for all elementary students with Business Club. Other monthly programs include: a cooking demonstration, wardrobe planning, nail sculpture, and a chapter dinner. The Christmas dinner and providing Christmas decorations in the library were two of their projects. Most of the dues go toward the pur- chase of new books and other needs of the library. This involves checking out books, reshelving books on the proper shelves, and collecting fines for overdue books. Christi Inman takes time out to restack a book on the shelf while working in Library Science. The Freshman Float Chapel of Love'' with candidate Carmella Rice is the first to appear, next Brandi Martin guards over My Blue Heaven , the Sophomore float. Sherry Anderson, Junior candidate, rides upon the first- place float Mexican Hat Dance . Finally, Karla Lamb, Senior candidate, takes a Slow Boat to China . The activities continue with the talent and coronation. Carmella Rice becomes a non-talented six-year-old girl and steals first-place in the talent competi- tion. Brandi Martin puts on her wings for the Heavenly Olympics . Sherry Anderson presents a skit What A Baby Thinks , and Karla Lamb salutes her heritage with a medley of songs. Liz Mack, Beth Helvey, Mary Mueller Lee Quelch - Unanimous All-Conference Mary Mueller - All-Conference The 1985 Tiger Tennis Season was again a big success for Coach Lashley and his team. The Conference Season ended with a 2nd place record of 8-2. The overall records for the players were: Ho. 1 player - Lee Quelch ending with a 15-2 record, was the winner of the Conference Tournament, was chosen as Unanimous All- Conference, and placed 3rd in the Southeast District. Mary Mueller the Ho. 2 player finished 7-5 and was All- Conference and won third place in Mo. 2 singles. Beth Helvey, Mo. 3, finished 11-1 and won 1st in Mo. 2 singles. The Mo. 4 player Shawn Smithmier had a 7-5 record and got 2nd place in Mo. 4 singles. Liz Mack the Mo. 5 player had a 3-2 record and finished 3rd in Mo. 5 singles. Leslie Parmer finished with a 1-4 record and 4th place in Mo. 6 singles. In doubles action Mary Mueller and Beth Helvey finished 9-3 and won first place in the Conference Tourney. Lee Quelch and Shawn Smithmier had an 11-1 record and won first place in Conference play. And, Liz Mack and Leslie Parmer had a 7-6 record and got 3rd in Conference action. The team won the Conference Tourney and then advanced to District. In District action A.V. competed with 5A schools throughout Southeast Missouri. Lee Quelch advanced to the semi-finals and won 3rd place. In District doubles, Mary Mueller and Beth Helvey advanced to the Quarterfinals. And, overall the team finished 4th in District. The Varsity and Junior Varsity both finished with 10 wins and 0 losses. At the tournament, Chris Collins was medalist with an 81; Mike Petty tied for 2nd with an 85; and Mike Larkin and Lee Quelch tied for 4th medalist with 87s. The team traveled to the Sikeston Invitation Tourney and took 6th place with Chris Collins' 78 tying for 3rd medalist honors. Also, Senior Golfer, Lee Quelch, will be attending Mizzou this fall with a golf scholarship. The team won 1st place in the Class 2A District Tournament held in St. Louis. Then, on to the State Tournament where the team won 2nd in the Missouri Golf Championships.
