Rivalries between classes were prominent from day I of the festivities, as each class strove for the winning title. The labors and efforts put forth by the students were shown by the impressive parade they produced. Each talented queen candidate showed by her hard work that she wanted badly to be chosen to reign over the school as Fall Festival Queen for 1982. The Juniors proved, though, that there could be only one victorious class. With first places in two categories and second places in two, the Junior class was named the winning one. Holly Chambers was the proud holder of the title of Fall Festival Queen. Holly Chambers on 1st place Junior Float 18 Basketball Homecoming 1983 The Varsity boys held Ste. Genevieve at bay easily during their confrontation at Homecoming. The Tigers fought Greta Mitchell, the 1982-83 Homecoming Queen hard, as always, and wound up winning the game by nine, 50-41. Junior Greta Mitchell broke into tears of joy following the announcement of her name as homecoming Queen. The customary dance, postponed because of unfavorable weather conditions, was celebrated by wild and exciting dancers and was as much of a success as the game itself. For the last couple of years the team has been limited to just a few girls coming back with varsity playing time. There are seven girls coming back this year that have lettered as Sophomores and Juniors. Therefore, the future looks bright for a successful season. They took 2nd place in the Vibernum Tournament and 4th place in the conference tournament. In commenting on the teams season. Coach Crews said, overall team hustle was good. The players never did quit on me. We had a few let downs in some big games, but it was good for the kids to get the experience of playing in a big game.” He named Mike Larkin and Brian Hayes as outstanding players. They ended their season with a record of 15-7. The girls’ games proved to be most exciting as nine of the twenty-two games ended with score differences of less than ten points. Coach Shaffer felt that the good team morale and the good hustle on defense, proved to be the major factor in their winning season. In tournament action, the girls team proved themselves more than capable of reaping their rewards. They brought home the second place trophy in the Bismark Invitational Tournament. However, their greatest feat of the season was their arrival at the final four in the Conference Tournament. Their third place victory made them the first team in Lady Tigers history to win a conference trophy. Allison Chiles, junior, was honored by being selected to the MAAA All-Conference Team of the 1982-83 season. In addition, Jennifer Draper, senior, received honorable mention in the conference selections. With only two Seniors, this young team fought strongly against the opposition. Although sometimes disappointed, they still proved they were basketball players to be reckoned with. 42 Awards Chris Hayes Free throws Most Assists Holly Chambers Defense Team records broken 1. One of the goals set by the baseball team at the beginning of the season was to surpass the number of wins gotten the last year. This goal was accomplished, though the record was a disappointing 4-12. Many bright spots highlight- ed the baseball season though, as John Smith, named Honorable Mention All-District, held an outstanding .452 batting average, and Senior Martin Thomas proved himself a great hitting pitcher with a 4-1 record and a .372 batting average. Coach Crews holds an optimistic attitude of future baseball seasons — their young team, if they continue to work hard, will be bound to be a winner soon. 46 Boys Tennis Left to Right - Joe Grimes, Tom Dettmer, Dale Turner, Scott Hill, Cord McLaurin, Robbie Rice. Rocky Newsom, Billy Heller. Much certainly can be said for the 1982-83 Boys Tennis Team — the effort put forth was stupendous. This effort resulted in a 5-5 season, record, a tie for 3rd place in the MAAA Conference, a 4th place in the Conference Tournament, and a 3rd place in the District Tournament. Cord McLaurin finished with an outstanding individual record of 17-3, including Conference and District Singles Championships, and a 2-2 State record at Columbia. He earned All-Conference and All-District honors. Dale Turner turned out with an individual record of 7-7, and was elected to the All-Conference 2nd team. 47 Golf Row 11 Liz Mack, Blaine Bates, Jamie Branstetter, Mike Holder, Ted Kelsheimer. Mike Petty, Bud Stone - Coach. Row 2, Lee Quelch, Amy McHenry, Candy Faulkner, Richie Dettmer. The Golf Team, led by three seniors, turned out a pretty good season this year, though their record was an even 4-4. This .500 record was pushed aside as they went on to take 3rd place in the conference. Senior Jamie Branstetter was voted most valuable to the team, while Liz Mack was chosen most improved. The golf team, with a number of freshmen to carry it on, can look forward to many successful years ahead. 48 Cross Country John Gray, Roger Twomey, Tracy Otterness, Paul Lashley, Hank Graftenreed, Mark Thompson Although the cross country team did not have enough people to establish a team rating, they did have a successful year. The boys that finished the season improved tremendously and gave 100%. Tracy Otterness was the outstanding runner and was invited to participate in the district competition. 49 Girls Tennis Row I - Amy Dettmer, Manager Cord McLaurin, Lee Quelch Row 2 - Laura Lashley, Jennifer Komar. Not pictured - Tracy Ruble The girls’ tennis team turned a few more heads this past season by having an exciting season highlighted by many close sets. Though the team won no collective matches, tiebreakers became pretty common for almost every player, and senior Amy Dettmer, freshman Lee Quelch, and freshman Tracy Ruble were enthusiastic in recording individual wins. In addition to these two first-year players, juniors Laura Lashley and Jennifer Komar will return to the court next season to wage battle in hopes of conference wins. Everyone connected with the team is looking forward to another intriguing, unique, and fun season of girls’ tennis. 51 Juniors 52 Alfaro, Salena Kaye Allen, Jackie Gerald Allgier, Pamela Ann Asher, Jeffrey Lynn Baker, Brian Lee Becwar, Joyce Lyn Brockes, Mona Carol Callahan, Kenneth Wayne Campbell, Elmer Chambers, Holly Marie Chiles, Allison Claire Cox, Sherry Crawford, Mary Jennette Crocker, Connei G. They made a trip to the St. Louis Art museum, where many members discovered that a broad range of art types requires a broad mind to appreciate these types. This experience was paired with a trip up in the Gateway Arch, which also stirred the adventure and imagination in the students. All involved found it a fun excursion. The Art Club also sponsored the Christmas Dance, which was also a successful event, and they went along with the French Club to sponsor the Mini Mardi Gras in April. A Barbecue at Elephant Rocks is planned for the end of the year, and it will surely be an exciting event to wrap up the year for the Art Club.
