A Salute To The Student Body Through the years the student body of Arcadia Valley has gained the reputation of being one of the finest in the state, if not in the nation. You have shown through your efforts and actions that you are proud of your school and community by par- ticipating in class projects, fund raising for charities, election campaigns and sporting events and academic contests. You have demonstrated that you are proud of Arcadia Valley. We salute you. 16 Michael Jay Archambault-Basketball 1.2. Golf 1.2.3.4. French Club 3. Drama Debate 4. Perfect Attendance Award 1.3. The theme of It's a Small World was echoed in the talent acts of the queen candidates later that night as the community gathered to witness the coronation of the Fall Festival Queen. A group of students from the elemen- tary, under the direction of Lawrence O'Rourke, royally entertained the assembly with a spoof of the music and musicians of the fifties. After the entertainment, competi- tions were tabulated, it was announced that the Juniors had . emerged victorious. Their candidate, Terri Maguf- fee. was crowned 1980 Fall Festival Queen. 2$ Top (Clockwise): Freshmen - I Think I Can”; Great Mitchell. Susie Phegley Tigers Cheered to Victory by Queen On February 20. the 1981 Homecoming Coronation was held during intermission between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games pitting the Arcadia Valley Tigers against the Clearwater Tigers. At that time, the five candidates were introduced to the fans and escorted to the stage through an honor guard of Varsity and Junior Varsity members. The theme of the activities. Special Lady.” was echoed as each candidate took her place on the stage. Miss Susie Phegley, Senior, was chosen by the team members to serve as 1981 Homecoming Queen. Retiring queen, Tami Cofer, Senior, gracefully passed on the symbolic tiara and queen’s bouquet to conclude the ceremonies. The Varsity Tigers then went on to finish the evening with a 69-61 victory over Clearwater. The next night, a Homecoming dance was held in the cafeteria for all members of the student body. This event concluded an exciting and memorable Homecoming weekend for everyone — especially for those Special Ladies. ivi Hia Two roads diverged in a, yellow wood,- —. Heading this list is a bonfire which was held at Mr. Helm's home in early November. The Art Club also was a sponsor of the Christmas Dance. In March, a roller-skating party was held at the new skating rink in Ironton. The Art Club consists of established artists at A.V. as well as those not seriously pursuing an art career. 34 Business Club Row I (left to right): Colleen Harris. Molly DePew. Angie Crocker. The chief aim of the Business Club is to keep students interested in business and to encourage students to enter the business field. During the 1980-81 school year it included approximately seventy members. The club has accomplished many things through- out the course of the year. They had a Christmas party for the Head Start children, and helped to sponsor the Christmas Dance. They worked hard making posters for the proposed tax levy increase. They helped pay for the popcorn machine, and served at the concession stand during ballgames. 35 Drama - Debate Left to right: Row I - Mr. Easter. Jan Reed. Debbi Fry. John Frizzel. Drama and debate are two of the oldest forms of communication in the history of the world. To be able to express feelings and facts through the use of properly selected words and gestures is the goal of those who participate in these activities. This year’s drama-debate club honed their skills in these areas to a precision point under the guidance of Mr. David Easter, their sponsor. The culmination of their activities was in the play The Good Doctor presented to the public in the school gymnasium. AH who saw this comedy were impressed with the acting skills and gave the play rave reviews. 36 The heat of battle is both seen and felt in this military encampment as each side attempts to preserve its honor and its place in history. One example of community involvement in the field of drama took place at the site of the Fort Davidson Battlefield. The whole community participated in the re-enactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob, a little-known, but extremely important encounter of the Civil War. These words are the extent of the French vocabulary most of us have, but a member of the French Club not only has a much more impressive and extensive command of the French language, but also studies the geography and history of the French-speaking peoples. Not all of the activities of the club are pertaining to studies, however. The members also make an annual journey to a local restaurant where the chefs, trained in the French cuisine, delight the palates of the members with a specially prepared French menu. The FHA club was relatively small this year. It had approximately 25 members. This club is designed for self-improvement, preparation for the future, interest in home economics as a career, and to make a better person out of each of the members. This year the club helped to sponsor the R.I.F. program in the elementary school by donating money. The members of the club helped distribute books purchased with the money. Arcadia Valley's National Honor Society went to work to induct new members because the present NHS was composed entirely of graduating seniors. With the help of their new sponsor, Norman Lucas, they drew their plans for a formal induction. So on May 4. they dusted off the robes and a chosen few practiced their speeches about the qualities of a NHS member. Of the chosen. Ron DeMand portrayed the members' leadership ability while Mary Dinger represented the members' service to their school. Also. Doug Tolbert showed a members' capacity for character, and Christy Komar gave the members’ strength in scholarship. The new inductees were: IOth grade - Blaine Bates. Jamie Branstetter. John Conley. Amy Dettmer, Jennifer Miller, Trisha Newsom, and Darrin Strange. Nth grade - Kim Brooks, Lisa Cox. Debbie Colyott. Claire Duncan. Sheila Flowers. Susan Gallaher, Kim Graftenreed, Viola Hurt. Elected by their classmates, these representatives are the voice of the students in the operation of the school activities. As such, this year's Council sponsored many projects to improve the school spirit. One such activity was the Spirit Week, during which each day the students dressed in a different style to show their support for the athletic teams. Another, and annual event, was the Flower Power Day during which the students could express their innermost feelings for other students, and teachers, by sending them a particular colored carnation. 44 Spanish Club At the table: Karen Inglish. The Valley is alive with the sound of music to paraphrase that famous showtune, and that is just what the Mixed Ensemble intends. Under the direction of Mr. Norman Lucas, this entertaining group not only further developed their musical talents during the year, but entertained the students, faculty and public at concerts. Although few if any of these tuneful Tigers aspire to professional music careers, they do find their school days enriched with their musical interludes. 48 Mixed Chorus Sponsor: Norman Lucas Row I: Connie Coad. This year the Jazz band has taken a step further in excellence under the guidance of the new musical director. Stephen Alsup. On November 24. they proved themselves to be improved when they played for the entire student body here at AV. Everyone heard for themselves that they played with the confidence only found by long hours of practice. It was plain that they knew how to utilize their instruments in order to put out top quality music. Much credit should go to their new director, but then again, what's a director without a great band like AV's Jazz band to follow his lead? 51 Stage Band Left to Right: Scott Middleton. Tony Wood . These young musicians showed their talent to A.V. this year by marching in two parades; the Reenactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob and the annual Fall Festival parade. They made impressive perfor- mances at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. A major event for the band was the District Contest in Cape Girardeau. A.V. was also blessed with five Honors Band students this year. These are exceptional members of each band in our district. We are all especially proud of these outstanding performers. Under the direction of Coach David Bone, the boys quickly developed into a much improved team. With only two Seniors, this young team fought strongly against the opposition. Although often disappointed, they still proved they were basketball players to be reckoned with. The girls' varsity games were among the most exciting in the athletics offerings. Six of the seventeen games ended with score differences of less than four points. Two of those six were real heartbreakers as the Lady Tigers' opponents barely squeaked by with only a one-point edge. In spite of a disappointing record of 4-13, one member of the squad, Mary Dinger. Sr., was selected as All-Conference. She sparked the team with her aggressive play and ability to score. She exemplified the enthusiasm of all the Lady Tigers. 40 54 Varsity 60 Valley J.V. 22 Bismarck Opponent 19 12 Valley 21 2A St. Genevieve If 33 Potosi 23 24 Bismarck 26 20 Caledonia 19 24 North County 29 13 Frcdericktown 33 49 West County 16 16 Central 26 14 Farmington 29 39 St. Vincent 27 23 Viburnum 25 J.V. After a disappointing season the Junior Varsity finished with only three wins over St. Vincent's, West Co., and Valle of Ste. Genevieve. 63 Left lo Right. Kelly Bone. Amy Dettmer. Joy Douma. Beth Moyer, Melissa Hulsey. The Spirit of Love” Our tennis team of five members has been a fine example of the competitive spirit found throughout our Arcadia Valley schools. In their second year as an organized inter-school sport, our young tennis squad met with stiff competition, but faced up to it strongly. Though their record of I-I I might seem weak there was great improvement as evidenced in their victory over St. Genevieve. These girls will undoubtedly improve, and we can look forward to a great year next year under the direction of Coach David Bone. 64 Track Team Girls Track- Lois Guhse. Tracy Emert. Glenda Palmer. Susan Russell. Grace McCurdy, and Tina Dunlap. The Track teams were under the direction and guidance of Mr. Draper. They worked hard and devoted much of their time to daily practice after school. Coach Draper drilled hard and strenuous exercises to his group and it really paid off. Most of all. the team got a chance to prove their long, hard hours of practice at those long, hard hours of competition. Although the team as a whole was not so successful at meets, they were a success to themselves and the fans at A.V. 65 Boys Track- Front row: (L. to n) Tom Strubinger. Don Dunlap. John Reeves.
