Sixth Run Diamond Run The Denny Shaffer family have become used to running. Not the current jogging trend but the running during the summer from one horse show to another horse show on the tri-county (Iron, Dent and Reynolds) show circuit. Denny has been showdng horses for 15 years and has recently been joined by his wife Carmen and daughter Calli. Denny spends about an hour each day keeping his current horse “Diamond Palace” in condition for the grueling contests of Flag racing, Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, and Plug Race. Denny gives the horse the credit for wanning the “Show of Show's” held last summer. This was a show composed of 14 different show circuits from the states of Arkansas and Missouri. Denny says this is an expensive hobby and when the Shaffer’s aren’t teaching school in the winter, he runs Black River Floats Canoe Rental in Lesterville. He simply loves Steve Martin. When asked why he likes him so much he said. Because he is so --------- funny. Steve is a guy with a special purpose in life. His first movie proves that anyone can be a successful jerk. Barry likes Steve’s dancing ability and would gladly trade places with him. There is only one problem, Barry doesn’t look good in white. Barry would like to be able to emulate his hero by writing words and music like Steve’s compositions of I'm Buying a Thermos for You, and “King Tut.” Steve and I have a lot in common, Steve came from a poor black family and worked his way into poverty and I started out as a poor white child and turned out to be a poor white teacher.” However Barry isn’t poor as far as his response from students as displayed by their respect and admiration for him as well as the fine work displayed each year by his classes at the art fair. 30 Sixth
