Jennifer Miller Susie Phegley Joy Douma Susan Ries — Thru The Looking Glass When Alice in Wonderland stepped ‘‘Thru the Looking Glass” into the world beyond the door of her drawing room, she said. ‘‘Oh. how nice it would be if we could get through the Looking-glass House! I’m sure it’s got. oh! such beautiful things in it. Let’s pretend there’s a way of getting through into it, somehow.” (From Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.) So come on all AV students and go thru the looking glass with the Tiger staff. We have such beautiful things inside our pages, so hop on thru and take a journey into wonderland with us thru the pages of the Tiger yearbook for 1980. o thru flic looking «flats wWfc Contents Administration and Faculty .........................3-12 Elementary.........................................13-26 Underclassmen .....................................27-46 Seniors .......................................... 47-58 Tiger King and Queen ................................ 59 Yearbook Staff ....................................60-61 Fall Festival .....................................62-63 Basketball Homecoming ............................... 64 Organizations .................................... 65-94 Sports ...........................................95-110 Activities.......................................111-127 Closing ............................................ 138 film the looking (flats with niiniffratiovt mill faculty Administration ].D. Not the current jogging trend but the running during the summer from one horse show to another horse show on the tri-county (Iron, Dent and Reynolds) show circuit. Denny has been showdng horses for 15 years and has recently been joined by his wife Carmen and daughter Calli. Denny spends about an hour each day keeping his current horse “Diamond Palace” in condition for the grueling contests of Flag racing, Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, and Plug Race. Denny gives the horse the credit for wanning the “Show of Show's” held last summer. This was a show composed of 14 different show circuits from the states of Arkansas and Missouri. Denny says this is an expensive hobby and when the Shaffer’s aren’t teaching school in the winter, he runs Black River Floats Canoe Rental in Lesterville. He simply loves Steve Martin. When asked why he likes him so much he said. Because he is so --------- funny. Steve is a guy with a special purpose in life. His first movie proves that anyone can be a successful jerk. Barry likes Steve’s dancing ability and would gladly trade places with him. There is only one problem, Barry doesn’t look good in white. Barry would like to be able to emulate his hero by writing words and music like Steve’s compositions of I'm Buying a Thermos for You, and “King Tut.” Steve and I have a lot in common, Steve came from a poor black family and worked his way into poverty and I started out as a poor white child and turned out to be a poor white teacher.” However Barry isn’t poor as far as his response from students as displayed by their respect and admiration for him as well as the fine work displayed each year by his classes at the art fair. 30 Sixth Doug Adams Denise Allen Kim Archer Dora Bailey Melissa Bennett Bridge Todd Kris Brooks Loretta Browers Sandra Browers Sharon Browers janie Bollinger Darrel Bone Nancy Bone Tammy Cloin Tiger 31 Seventh Bobby Montgomery Toby Moore James Moses Doug Newsom Richard Noel Stacy Pennebaker Tina Pryor Gayla Pogue Julie Pollock Melinda Randolph Preston Reed Debbie Reynolds Robby Rice Angela Rugh Tigers Seventh Wendy Francis Joe Grimes Therecia Haertling Cindy Hedgcoth Billy Heller Eric Henson Debbie Hermann Beth Harold Scott Hill Mike Hogan Bobbi Holland Roxanna Hughes Norman Inman Alice Johnson Eddie Jones John Keith Kenneth King Barbie Klaverkamp Tom Komar Paul Lashley Amanda Liggett Phyllis Macalady Ronald Marler Eva Martignoni Cindy Martin Shelly Martin Lynette McGraw Rickie Miller Seventh Seventh Alan Spitzmiller Mark Stirts Cydnee Suchman Lori Summers Tonya Svviney Billy Tedford Lisa Thomlinson Dana Tripp Cindy Tolbert Dale Turner Rodney Tvvomey Roger Tvvomey Margaret Usher Steve Volner Stephanie White Donnie Williams Tony Woods 33 ------------------------------------ Seventh - “Let’s Paint” Take a little bit of blue, a little bit of white, now blend those together and let's paint a pretty sky. One of the stops on my tour of Edinburgh, Scotland, was the ‘ Royal Zoo of Scotland. The highlight of the zoo was the Aquatic House where the Penguins lived. From that day, I fell in love with penguins. I have penguin statues from all over the world. One of my furry penguins was brought to me from Scandinavia. I purchased my crystal glass penguins in an art shop on the left bank in Paris, France. Many friends and students who know of my adoration of the bird remember me with gifts of them at holidays. I have penguin cups and glasses, salt and pepper shakers, refrigerator deodorizers and coasters all in the penguin forms. His Uncle too has collected war artifacts and gave Danny his favorite item, a genuine German Officer overcoat. Danny ordered the helmets he has from an Army surplus store in Canada. Danny has read all the books and magazine articles pertaining to the wars and his one ambition in life is to visit the battle fields in Europe and observe for himself the actual sites of the many battles he has only read about. Who thinks he has the best build and the cutest bottom? Who is jealous of all those famous leading ladies he has starred with? Who uses the one word “sexy” to describe him and has as her future goal to meet someone just like him and get married to him? If your answer is Susan Ries you’re right. Susan is madly in love with Robert Redford and has done all the things listed above. She would really like to meet him in person and almost got her chance when Robert visited Tan Tara for a council on energy conservation. She missed him though. If she could have one choice, it would be to spend a weekend with him doing outdoorsy things. Susan has been in love with Redford since she was seven years old and from the look in her eyes it will last a long time. When asked if she would have wanted to star with Redford in either THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN or THE WAY WE WERE she said “no, because they don’t end up together in the end of the movie.” Who knows maybe Susan will someday get to meet her idol and she can then express her sentiments to him in person but for now she does it with posters and a scrapbook of clippings and going to see him over and over again on the big Dwight Jones Jeff Jones Jennifer Jones Bradley Lambert David Lashley Jenni Latham Mindy Lunsmann Tod McEntire screen. However, after coaching both football and basketball, for three years, basketball became not just a game to him but a way of life. His wife says he never gets tired of watching the game.” Dave’s biggest ambition in life would be to win the Missouri State Championship. Coach Bone feels that to be a truly great basketball player, a person must have the desire to win above all else. He feels that if heart transplants were possible, it should be done in the field of basketball, transplant the heart of a person who has a lot of heart in to one who has little desire to win but lots of ability. To Dave Bone, basketball coaching is not a job but rather his life. Tiger 44 Juniors Juniors Paul Thomlinson, a resident sophomore at AV, performs with the popular rock group Legal Tender.” Paul plays guitar and performs as a back-up vocal for the group that he has been a member of since it started in October of '79. The group has always been composed of graduates from Arcadia Valley, but at the present, the group is reforming itself by heir music covers the entire spectrum of rock. They perform music from several groups like REO SPEEDWAGON, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, JOUR- NEY, FOREIGNER, and BAD COMPANY just to mention a few. They’ve also composed and sang some of their own compositions. But, as Paul has learned, if you plan to be a musician, don’t do it for the money. When asked how long he has been seriously performing, he replied, “When I joined the band, I had been playing guitar seriously for about 10 months, but 1 had always wanted to play one for years before I ever picked one up. I had idolized musicians for years before the thought of performing had occurred to me.” One mu- sician he idolized and still does, is Mark Sugarbear” Elsworth who really got him started. Having friends in the band is really important, especially when all the members are serious about their music like “Legal Tender.” LEGAL TENDER LOCATION ■ Kramer's ROCK’N'ROLL ft ■ F: The members of ''Legal Tender : Tom Russell. The turn-out. as always, was overwhelming as floats rolled through Pilot Knob. Ironton. and Arcadia. The Freshman float was first in the procession of floats, its theme was Old-Faithful and Queen candidate Miss )ennifer Miller rode upon it. Second followed the sophomore float with its theme “Statue of Liberty where Queen candidate Miss Joy Douma was perched on top. Third came the junior float with its theme Gateway to the West” and Queen candidate Miss Susie Phegley stood the entire trip. Finally the Seniors float that used the theme of “Spirit of St. Louis with Queen candidate Susan Ries in the cockpit. Later the candidates were introduced to the general audience at the high school auditorium where they performed in talent competition. Miss Jennifer Miller danced a variety of steps from early 20th century to the latest disco steps. She won 3rd in talent. Miss Joy Douma then sang and played the piano, flute, and guitar. She won 4th in talent. Next was Miss Susie Phegley. who danced to Bad Girls. She won 2nd in talent. Finally Miss Susan Ries danced and sang, and won first place in talent. After the candidates performance, and as anticipation mounted, the final vote was cast and Susie Phegley was the new 1979 Fall Festival Queen. The junior varsity's definite victory of 61 to 38 had created the atmosphere needed, and when five homecoming queen candidates strolled across the floor, the audience was tensed with expectations. The candiates were escorted by members of the varsity team. The entire court walked down the gym floor through two aisles formed by the team members. The girls were seated on the stage and the new homecoming queen was chosen. It was difficult for our team, but St. Vincent could not overcome AV. The score changed in favor of the other team often, but the board showed that the Tigers had the upperhand. 74 to 60 was the final tally. After the outstanding vic- tory, a dance was held in celebration in the cafeteria. It was sponsored by Student Council and had a large turnout. Patti Wallen and David Hasty -------- Homecoming Miss Tami Cofer was crowned 1980 Homecoming Queen by Lucretia Neuman, President of Pep Club, who acted in absence of retiring queen, Miss Brenda Nichols. Under the vigilance of the new Homecoming Queen, the Tigers won the following game against the Warriors. °flirt the looking «flats with orqanizatioHf Art Club Row 1: Jennifer Miller, Paul Thomlinson, Laurie Blanton, Mr. Helm, Rhonda Mickan, Christy Komar. Tiger 66 Art Club Art Awards Talented fingers had been at work putting out the best product they could possibly create. Drawings, paintings, wood prints, littered the Art Room on the eve of the contest. Landscapes draped every available wall in the halls. The abundance of talent was apparent everywhere one went. But in the end, a few people were separated from the crowd as the outstanding artists. The big winners were Dianne Mueller and Christy Komar, with Christy winning the top award. The Drama-Debate club, sponsored by Lindell Dunivan, was an important boost to the careers of the talented members. Experience was their training and they’ve just began to experience what it takes to be a performer. Their executive staff is composed of an unemployed disc jockey; Ron DeMand as president, a dancer who is light on her feet and carries on a conversation with those lights; Susan Ries as vice-president, a confused basketball player; David Hasty as secretary and treasurer, and two examples of over-and-under-dramatizing; Sue Plapp and David Stubbs as Publicity Chairman. They worked to make money in their play. This year’s play was, “Boy Wanted”, a three act comedy; that premiered on April 18th and 19th. With the money, they plan to reduce the cost so the club can go to the American theatre. When the club went to the Jackson Speech Tournament, Ron DeMand took 2nd place in radio speaking and David Stubbs took 3rd place in poetry in poetry reading. VICA means new professionals for the world of skilled workers. It’s the duty of the sponsors, Ted Spencer and Dave Esselman, to build leaders out of their 80 members. Their presiding president is Shelli King, Vice-president is John Lorenz, secretary Jean Stout, treasurer Laurie Miller, reporter Brad Crocker, parliamentarian Rodney Lashley, and historian Darren Jones. VICA is very active, having donated gifts and toys to the state school children and performing in a Christmas play for the children. At the beginning of this school year, VICA had an unusual but successful attempt at making the new members feel Welcomed. With such events as egg throwing contest, football toss, apple dunk, tug-of-war, and a volunteer teachers dunking machine. Of course, VICA doesn’t just play games. They are always involved in projects for the local community or attending events such as VICA District contest held on March 15 and a state contest on April 25. In October of 79, they had a banquet at Fort Davidson to create enthusiasm for the club and were honored with a guest speaker, Dr. Jess Hudson, who gave a speech on “What VICA Can Mean to You.” Tiger 79 VICA AV Jazz “On The Rocks” Row 1 from left to right: Lisa Miller, Laurie Collins, Tom Duncan, John Latham, Mr. Ken Cook, Director. The AVHS Jazz Band has certainly made a name for itself. Motivating the crowds with their music, the members took the valley by storm. Early in December, they participated in a festival in Bismarck. Later in February, they traveled to Rolla placing second in a state-wide contest. Among their other performances, the group played for school assemblies, and even went on tour” to Bunker and Lesterville for a duo of concerts. The highlight of the year, though, was the first place they took at North County in another competitive contest. Moving to 3A Division didn’t stop this group. Even though they are “on the rocks”, they are still going strong! Tiger l5' Stage Band 80 Second Stage Band “Just A Step Behind” Just a step behind is the 2nd Stage Band. They’ve learned the system behind the stored literature on the shelves used by many to find information about certain subjects. The club’s officers, President Lynette Henry, Vice- President Dorothy Allen, Secretary Sherry Meinhardt, Treasurer James Colyott, and Reporter Debbie Hurt, may all one day be an important part of the modern recording system. The members have been buying furniture and equipment for the library through various fund raising projects. Different schools from our area met at St. Genevieve and performed for their school. Then there was the fall concert. The group held a Christmas Cantata entitled “Born A King” and also went Christmas caroling. There was a Madrigal Festival at central where sixteen members of mixed ensemble sang for eight schools. Spring Festival was also held at Central high school. Then contest time came and all of the groups hard work paid off. Of course, Mrs. Gilliam was a tremendous asset to the high scores the members received - without her it wouldn’t have been possible. The way the members are scored is on a scale from one to five, one being excellent. This year contest was held at Cape Girardeau. Soloists who received one’s were, David Scott and Jim Russell. Also, the boys quartet, consisting of Jim Russell, David Scott, Dave Watson, and Greg Brewer received a one. Everyone who scored a one was eligible to compete in the state contest held in Columbia. The Boy’s Quarter received a one at State, the highest award possible. Honors Musical Groups These four students, David Scott, Jim Russell, David Watson, and Greg Brewer — known as AV's “Barber Shop Quartet”, took a “1” rating at district contest and went on to state and did it again! They sang “Climbin up the Mountain”, and Aura Lee” to give them such an astounding score. Pictured here are AV’s All-District” Chorus winners. Under the direction of new Coach, Mark Williams, the AV Baseball Team got off to a roaring start. Hampered by lots of rain and little practice time, the season proved to be a disapjxiintment for the Tiger Squad. The season was not a total loss as Jimmy Harper pitched one of Missouri no hit hall games and Mark Moyer was named to the All-conference squad. David Watson was named to the all district first team and Mike Miller, Mark Moyer, and Jimmy- Harper were named to the all-district second team. Greg Archambault, John Lorenz, Joey Branstetter, Brad Lambert, and Jamie Branstetter. Their record was 7-8, but they had a fantastic season. They won the conference tour- nament and were given the first and third place medalist honors won by Mike Archambault and Brad Lambert. The best part of the season was that these youngsters got great experience for their future years of golf. The absolute, never to occur again, final Friday of Senior year. Everyone was in an uproar. Sponsors busy handing out caps and gowns, administration trying to get graduation practice underway, and Seniors pacing around, literally going crazy. But things eventually did get started and before anyone knew it that long awaited “last day was over. From there the majority of the class was off to the river to enjoy the traditional “Senior Skip Day.” Tiger _________________________________________ 122 Graduation Senior Skip Day The site carefully selected for this years get together was Bluff Hole, a secluded swimming hole on Black River. Every Senior who came down enjoyed a fantastic time. The day was filled with sunbathing on the beach, swimming in ice cold water, barbecuing steaks, and talk of all the good times had over the years. The opening day of Senior Week was one that will not be soon forgotten. Tiger 123 Graduation Graduation Graduation Tiger 125 Graduation Graduation Valedictorian James Arlen Miller Salutatorian Vicki Sue Orr Senior Week had moved swiftly passed us and before anyone knew it we were up on stage, one by one, accepting that hard earned diploma, that years ago had seemed like such a long way off. For the 1980 graduates one long term goal has been accomplished. From here many of us will go our separate ways, enjoying life and all it has to offer. Yet, we will never forget Arcadia Valley and the friends we knew and cherished, it will always hold a special place in our fond and priceless memories. As you turned each page, I am sure you brought back to mind all of the good times you had throughout the year and all the special moments you experienced at AV during 79-80! That is what makes the yearbook such a priceless gift, in the fact that it does bring all those memories back to life. While compiling a yearbook is no easy task, we have thoroughly enjoyed taking you on a trip through the “looking glass!” We would like to give a special thanks to certain people for their help in making the yearbook a huge success — Rita Hammock - for lettering on the cover, Aubrey Richards - for organizations and division page pictures, Pres Semar - for all his advice and help, Mr. Smithmier - for excusing us from classes to take pictures and do other work, Mr. Finley - for all of his supervision and hard work, and to Dawnbreaker Music - for allowing us to use the lyrics to “We May Never Pass This Way Again”, for without these people the yearbook would have been impossible. We hope you are proud of this special book and what is printed on its pages. If you are, then all our hard work has certainly paid off.
