The staff hopes that this yearbook will be a step in the direction of progress, moving forward in time and looking forward to the future. The arrows are to represent that the SENIOR class of 1977 are going to move forward into life. We feel that the class is one that can progress in life if they use the tools that nature and God has given them. The yearbook serves as a memory to all students but especially to the Seniors for this is their last yearbook and also the last time to attend Arcadia Valley High. GRADUATION 1977-It was hot. In fact it was really hot. The weather seemed to have waited until Graduation night to really turn on the heat. Attorney General John Ashcroft urged the high school Seniors to get turned on and amount to something. He also urged them to get on the most wanted list, not the FBI list but to get on a list of doing something good for America. Mr. Smithmier presented awards to the Seniors and then it was time for the climax to 12 years of long work for the Seniors as they received their diplomas from Board president John Komar. It was time for the newest members of the AV alumni to move ONWARD, ONWARD, AS LIFE CONTINUES ON ITS WAY. If you stick me. I’ll punch you. John Ashcroft, Attorney General of Missouri, delivered the commencement address at the 1977 graduation. Fall Festival Fall Festival, or Carnival, as it was once called, has been as much a part of Arcadia Valley as the Courthouse, Pilot Knob Mountain, or Miss Reese. Thousands of high school kids slaved over the floats, worked on raising money and marched through the crowded streets of Ironton, throughout the years. Maybe it is this that adds so much flavor to the festivities. In former times, Carnival meant exactly what it says a carnival of booths, balloons, tickets and prizes. Although floats also played a part in the final selection, votes were thp deciding factor. Each vote had to be bought, therefore, the class with the most money won. Things have definitely changed. For the past several years, a queen is selected on the basis of five areas: Work day, float, the candidate’s talent, the boy’s skit and votes at the door. A first place in any area is worth 400 points, 2nd-350, 3rd-300, and 4th-250. On the day of the Festival all points are added and the class with the most points sees their candidate crowned. Activities begin with work days. Each class is assigned one weekend to raise as much money as possible. Everything from fish dinners to rock-a-thons are legal. The class turns over all money left after bill-paying day to be counted. The boys skits are usually performed twice—once on candidate-selection day and once on the actual night of the Festival. They are humorous sketches of events in the Valley, take-offs from T.V. Shows, or just a combination of anything and everything funny rolled into one. Senior Float. Fifty Golden Years of the Tiger First Place 50th Anniversary The 1976 Fall Festival Court Finally the day comes. A parade is held and crowds line the streets of the three towns to cheer their selected Sophomore Float “Those Golden Memories” class float and to listen to blaring bands. That evening everyone gathers in the high school gym to complete the whole spectacle. After all the skits are presented, a procession of flower girls, candidates, and escorts file past an eagerly awaiting audience. Breaths are held, foreheads break into sweat, and classmates cling to each other as the results are read by an ever-so-patient MC. When the final announcement is made, screams of delight, groans of disgust from not-so-victorious classmen fill the air. And the Fall Festival goes on another year . . . Former Fall Festival Queens Candidate choosing is a day marked with yelling, cheerleaders, honking cars, and flowers. Each candidate has two weeks in which to develop a talent number. This must be performed before everyone on that fateful night. Meanwhile, floats are built at different places throughout town. Kids rush back and forth between IGA and their building locations, sneaking previews of other floats as they “stumble across” them. Miss Reese, special speaker, introduces former queens. Freshman Flout. Stairway to the Golden Crown' Watch me make a hole in this car. Just a little short, isn’t he Liz. I’m making my own special brew. Watch this fake. The Freshmen held a dance as a part of their work-day. Who says I'm chicken? My fans love me! Sophomore workday consisted of a Chili Supper, a dance, and a Walt Disney Movie. Sophomore Newly-Elected Patti. Candidate Patti Crocker, escort Terry Crawford. Sophomore boys' skit entitled “Misi Frankenstein Beauty Pageant” co-starring The Mummy. This skit won first place. Patti’s talent included an organ and piano solo, all wrapped up in a comedy skit where she and her “dummy” Husband reminisced about the good old days. Patti presented 2nd place trophy at Thanksgiving tournament. Kim Boyd’s talent was a dance to the song “Stairway to Heaven. Kim won first place in the talent contest. Kim presents the first place trophy in the annual Thanksgiving tournament. 28 J The Junior boy’s skit was “Commercials Two” and presented the Tord commerical as one of the highlights. n ♦ i o r s Dan Pennstrom and Eddie Lewis hard at work on the Junior float. “Let me get serious for a minute.” “Election Day Rush. Emily Dickinson Onward-Onward-Onward It is always a good feeling to write this last little bit about a yearbook. It is a good feeling because at this time the staff knows that the work is almost finished for another year. It is so simple for people not on the staff to be critical of all the mistakes in the yearbook or to say they don't like the cover design or why did they do the pages this way. However the staff knows the vast amount of hard work, time and effort that it takes to make a yearbook. It seems at the beginning of the year as if there is only a set number of pages which must have a set number of pictures on those pages. If it were only that simple. Words which strike terror to the hearts of yearbook staff members—crop, stamp, rough layout, final layout, proofread, check 3 r form, do copy sheets, check proof from the company—and this is just a few of the terms with which the staff deals each day. So the 1977 TIGER staff hopes you will look, read, laugh, cry and hold dear this yearbook as you travel ONWARD through life because never will we all pass this way again. 112 WALSWORTH Marceline, Mo., U.S.A. in WALSWORTH Marccljne, Mo., U.S.A.
