THE 1974 TIGER contains many new and different concepts this year. Some of these ideas people may like while others they may hate. First and the most obvious is the new horizontal structure of the yearbook. Another is the use of all engraver's brown ink printed on a colored paper stock. But in spite of these new features the book still has those same old features — the school life, students, and faculty of Arcadia Valley High School. Welcome to the 1974TIGER. Theme. Climaxing two weeks of long hard work during which A VMS moved through the motions of school work while thoughts were really on the events which were coming up—getting the floats finished, polishing the skits for presentation on Saturday night, wondering what the four queen candidates would do for their talent and dreaming about winning the whole thing and having their candidate named queen. Soon all wondering and dreaming was over and all that re- mained was the lovely afterglow of memories that will move again across the shadows of our mind sometimes in the future. No one class made a clean sweep and not until the final event was the queen selected. On the basis of their class winning float and skit Paula Dinger was named Fall Festival queen. FRESHMEN The Freshmen Class boys' skit centered around a softball game in which Cheryl Bennett was their favorite cheerleader. Cheryl swept first place in talent by perform- ing a skit The Sound of Music and ended by playing the organ. They chose 1001 Arabian Nights as their greatest book and placed the legendary Aladdin's Lamp and a magic carpet on their float. For their workday they held a fishfry. |p? !i • It J . I® 1 PLA LI HMl SOPHOMORES • - •? Paula Dinger was chosen the Sophomore Class Favorite. The boys captured first place for their skit, A.V.'s Playboy Club. Treasure Island , which proved to be their greatest book, placed first place with its Pirate's flag flying and Long John Silver standing guard over the treasure chest of riches. The class chose barbequed chicken as their workday. Paula did a skit based on the musical Fiddler on the Roof . Paula was also named Fall Festival Queen for 1973-1974. 29 JUNIORS Pam Degonia was chosen to represent the Junior Class. The Juniors made the most money on their workday by serving Chile and they received first place. Their float, Don Quixote , featured a red and white windmill with Don Quixote bravely standing in front. The boys put together their skit and presented Let's Make a Steal . Pam based her talent on a comedy skit with her computer Sammy . She also played her guitar and sang. SENIORS Ginger Trotter was the Senior class choice. Working with purple the class chose The Bible as an appropriate float and showed three white symbolic crosses with an open bi- ble. Ginger carried out the theme by acting a reading from the Bible and singing a song entitled, The 23rd Psalm . The Seniors sponsored a Ham and Bean dinner for their work- day and the boys performed the skit K.R.A.P. TIGER KING AND QUEEN MICHAEL GUERTIN GINGER TROTTER The Basketball Homecoming this year proved to be a very mem- orable one. The theme this year was A Winter Wonderland . The stage was decorated in blue and white with giant snowflakes and beautiful candelabras. The Tigers set out to defeat their opponents, the Leadwood Purple Pups, and the B team started the evening with a 58-42 victory. The A team got into full swing and edged the Pups 67-66. Afterwards the Home- coming Dance was held with mu- sic by Gibralter. 1st Princess Chris Garrison and escort John Smith. DEBATE In this world of high pressure ad- vertising, propaganda, slanted edi- torials, headlines and newscasting, there is no question that students will participate in debate. The only ques- tion is whether or not their participa- tion will be rational and effective. Debating teaches a student to sepa- rate factual evidence from emotion and propaganda. It teaches him to think on his feet and defend his argu- ments against vigorous questioning. The debate contests this year have centered on a guaranteed annual in- come for all citizens. Several have been postponed because of bad weather. The district contest was Jan- uary 25 and 26 and there were tourn- aments at Potosi, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff. SEATED: S. Latham, C. Erpenbach, P. MARTHA CARR NAMED ALL CONFERENCE Martha Carr had the honor this year to be voted to the All Conference Volleyball team as a spiker. Martha was a good example of what hard work and dedication can mean to a high school athlete. Her leadership on and off the floor gained her respect of her teammates and opponents alike. B” TEAM VOLLEYBALL Cheryl Bennett, Patty Meesey, Debbie Pyron, Vickie Aldridge, Diana Strange, Ann Russell, Debbie Rariden, Elaine Adams. This year the Freshman and Sophomore classes brought along a fine crop of ball players. The girls rebounded from a win less season the year before to .500 mark in com- petition. The younger tigerettes got a good taste of competition and know that work and dedication can and will reap good benefits. The experience that was obtained on this level of competition will never be taken away and will follow these fine girls for years to come. Coach Jim Erpenbach GOLF TEAM Don Wilcoxen, Pat Murphy, Mr. Mike Martin-coach, Tom Maguffee, Steve Spitzmiller, Bill Miller, Tim Meeks, Gary Pyron. ■ FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS AVHS enrolled two new members this year from foreign countries. Arriving in October, Miguel Vazquez had his first taste of American life. Born Miguel Angel Vazquez on September 29, 1956, he grew up in Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico. He came from a family of six—having two sisters and one brother. His father is Jaime Vazquez; his mother is Barbara Aldazaba de Vazquez. Miguel likes the friendliness of the people of the United States. The schools are alot like the ones where he comes from but the girls are different in that they have more freedom. After graduation, Miguel plans to go to a mili- tary school and study aviation to become a commercial pilot. His hobbies are fishing, horse- back riding, soccer, singing and playing the gui- tar. When asked what the best thing he'd found in the valley was, he replied, The best thing I've found here is the Maguffee family. He has lived with Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Maguffee and their family since his arrival and plans to return to Mexico in June. Maria Lucia Vanderlei de Andrade arrived in Irontown in December from Recife, Pernam- buco, Brazil. She was born on October 5, 1957, the daughter of Donato Moreira de Andrade and Noemi Vanderlei de Andrade. There are nine children in her family—4 boys and 5 girls. Like Miguel, Lucia finds the people friendly and in- teresting. After graduation, she hopes to go into psychology or work with computers. Her hobbies include volleyball, going to the beach, and all sorts of sports. Lucia has resided with Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dinger and family and plans to re- turn home in June. Trying to compose some last minute thoughts to go on the last page of a yearbook at first seems an impossible task. But it is a small problem compared to all of the other problems faced by a staff—like lost pic- tures, pages left at home, late deadlines, pictures needed to complete deadlines not taken, coming up with a new twist while still doing the same old thing of trying to show what the year was like at AVHS and numerous other problems. Yearbooks are judged differently by different people. If it is a real humdinger of a book, then that's great and everyone is happy. However, if it is not a good book, then watch out. Students judge the book by how many times they got their picture in it or if it is neat or not. The Administration judges it on how much it cost, and teachers check for mistakes in grammar or spelling or something else that is dear only to a teacher's heart. Everyone is a Monday morning quarterback—ready to offer all kinds of suggestions when it finished but seldom any before this time. There are many things to be said and so many people to thank. The one thing that a person who works on the annual staff is thankful for is that it is done at last. Contrary to beliefs, being a staff member isn't all it's cut out to be. It is at best a thankless task. Doug Thompson and Alan Nations got the annual started this year with their Classes section. They somehow managed to wade through mounds of pictures and sort and identify the 600 some-odd students in the school. Donna Thorn drew up the Administration and Faculty section. She added snaps of both groups to change the monotony. Randy Scamfer worked hard on Sports. This being his first year would seem to make things difficult to do alone, but he got right in there and figured out what was going on. Working with very few good pictures, he managed to put together a good sports section. Jan Signer and Debbie West had Activities and although they seldom saw each other they always had their pages turned in on time. Cindy Parmer and Sheila Latham took organizations which is one of the harder sections to do. They pressed many a person for a writeup and names to go with faces so that everyone would know a little more about AVHS Clubs and those who were members could be identified. Lisa Guhse and Lucia Rohrer waited all year for pictures so they could get the Theme section to movin... They tried something new by using colored boxes and dark lines to outline the pictures and created a Mondrian design. Rick McCurdy was photographer, and even though he got a slow start things improved for him somewhat toward the end of the year. He had a hard time trying to fill his big brother's shoes. Pam Degonia and I tried to work with everyone as problems came up or when another member didn't have time to complete their pages. The person who deserves the most thanks is Mr. Finley. He somehow kept his patience throughout the entire year. No matter how far behind we were on our deadlines or how much anyone goofed off, he kept his cool and continued to search for new and better ways to improve the 1974 TIGER. To everyone else who put up with the staff throughout the year, I say thank you. The efforts on everyone's part got this book together. Finally in looking at the yearbook, I think everyone is a little skeptical as what reaction we will get. True, we brought about a definite change, but there is always room for improvement. I enjoyed being the editor and in spite of all the problems its been great fun and I hope everyone enjoys the 1974 TIGER half as much as we all did in putting it together.
