This is, of course, the beloved Miss Dorothy Reese. No one per- son has given more unselfishly or untiring than this woman to her school and community. Miss Reese is a woman of diversified and many talents. She writes a weekly column for THE MOUNTAIN ECHO, takes care of her 93 year mother, attends most school activities, directs the most important event at our school, the queen coronation, finds time to write her little black book for the Christmas Dance, attends B and PW Club, and is a good neighbor to her many friends up and down the streets and roads of Arcadia Valley. Miss Reese has given of herself to this school sys- tem for 31 years and has continually enriched, en- lightened, and enhanced the life of each person with whom she has come into contact. After meeting Miss Reese the world seems to be a little brighter and a little better than it was before. For her untiring devotion and love — we the TIGER staff of 1973 — dedicate this annual with love to MISS DOROTHY REESE. FACULTY High school faculty 1944. It is always amazing to me how the activities of a school year can be correlated to present the total picture of our school program. It is in my opinion that the Arcadia Valley School District offers one of the finest school programs available to students anywhere with a fine faculty and superior student body. I would like especially to compliment Mr. Finley for his excel- lent guidance as our yearbook sponsor. As we complete an even richer program as we anticipate the beginning of our future vocational program, I commend each of you for a job well done. J. D. Maguffee Superintendent PRINCIPAL D. Harwell Lambert Principal I would like to thank the faculty and parents of the com- munity for helping make 1972-1973 a successful school year. A special thanks to our student body for their efforts and cooperation. If these students are examples of people who will someday lead our society, and I think they are, we can look forward to a bright future. 6 Mr. Wayne Wheeler ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT This is the first year I have been associated with high school age stu- dents. My observation is that if the students of Arcadia Valley High are typi- cal American teenagers, then I cannot agree with those who say the youth of America have gone to the dogs. A year with these students has made me more optimistic about the fu- ture of our country. VO-TEC DIRECTOR As we take this opportunity to look back over the past thirty years, we are reminded anew that change is a very real part of our lives. We realize that large amounts of time, energy and money have been dedicated to pro- viding an educational system which is in touch with these changes. The development of a vocational technical program is an excellent example of the school adapting to the needs of the total community. As we look to the future let us dedicate ourselves to building a better so- ciety by providing the opportunity for each individual to develop his abili- ties to their fullest possible level. What is left after a year or years have passed? What is remembered? What is forgotten? What is shelved away in some little niche of our mind until suddenly something or someone reminds us again of things or persons long forgotten? This annual has at- tempted to do this very thing. The TIGER 1973 will not remind all persons of the same things — because each person in analyzing an event or occurrence brings their own particular experience or perspective to that analyzation and hence the experience becomes like people individualized. Contained in this book are a number of diversified events which made up part of the school year at Arcadia Valley. The TIGER also con- tains some pictures which will perhaps mean more to parents or people in the Valley than to today’s stu- dents. These events though at one time were as su- premely important to past students as the current events are to 1973’s students. By looking closely at the old pictures contained in this yearbook the annual staff hopes the reason for our title, We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!” becomes clear — because we have come a long way. Draw some comparisons between the buildings 10 years ago and today, the dress 20 years ago and today, the faculty 25 years ago and today, and the first annual in 1943- 1944 and the one today. This is not to say that for their time and period the buildings, faculty, dress or yearbook were not of first rate quality — but we mere- ly point out — “WE’VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY!” 43 ROW 1: J. CHRISTMAS DANCE 'A Visit to Santa’s Workshop” was the theme of this year's Christmas Dance. A real workshop complete with Santa and stuffed toys served as decorations. After having been scheduled and rescheduled be- cause of icy weather, on December 20 the annual Christmas Dance was held. Sponsored by the FBLA, NHS, FHA, and the Art Club the dance was proclaimed a huge success by the students that attended. Music played by the band, Roscoe Cheer, kept the students on their feet and off their seats and they danced right up to the bewitching hour of 11 when all good little boys and girls went straight home before they turned into pumpkins. IN RETROSPECT The last minute rush is over, the last picture has been taken, numbered, and cropped, the last 3-R form has been drawn, and the last words written. The 1973 TIGER is now finished. For the staff members who worked on the yearbook this year, there is left a warm glow of satisfaction for a job well done. We feel that this has to be one of the finest and most out- standing yearbooks in the history of Arcadia Valley High School. It will be for the 14 staff members and advisor who worked many long, tiring hours to bring some order and continui- ty to a tangled mass of plans, pictures, names, and other trivia which make up a yearbook. This was an especially fun yearbook to do. We only hope the student body enjoys all the pictures — both old and new — as much as we did while choosing them for this year’s TIGER. As the 1973 school year becomes a part of the long and cherished history of Arcadia Val- ley High School, the 1973 TIGER staff hopes that this book will help recall memories of this year and keep them forever in mind.
