An annual is not like the mind and our many other human traits, filled with forgetfulness with the passage of time. What is recorded here, is at all times available to anyone wishing to look or browse through. It cannot be, as things might be in our mind, altered or changed with the passage of time. What we look at this year will, herein this yearbook, remain the same, even though we, the person in flesh, may change from year to year or day to day. Years from now, as we look back to this school year 1955-56 with our child- ren or grandchildren, let's hope that we can think back through time to the many pleasant memories of I.H.S. and of the student body we were once part of. The pleasure and wealth of owning this TIGER has only started paying di - vidends this year. JAMES W . BRINKOPF Southeast Missouri State (B.S. in Education) University of Missouri (Master in Education) A good high school depends upon a good student body, a good faculty, good facilities, and good community support. Ironton High School has been fortunate in having a better than fair share of these factors in the past. This will account, to a great extent, for the high degree of success of its students in the many under- takings . Let us hope that we can continue to maintain a high school that will be a pleasure and an honor to attend . Let us continue to keep our standards high! H.E. We were all proud of our senior rings which arrived soon after school started we were walking on air fear a couple of weeks. Soon after electing our class officers and getting settled, carnival time rolled around. We worked hard to crown our candidate, Hilda Jones, Queen of I.H.S. Soon after carnival our class worked hard to set a new record on magazine sales which added $400 to ourtre- asury. The seniors made some more extra money selling refreshments with the juniors at the small regional tournament held in Ironton. This year nearly all seniors wanted to do something as we were represented in several organizations of the school. Included in these were: F.H.A., F.F.A., mixed chorus, girls' chorus, tiger talks staff, tiger staff, pep squad, and student council. In Sports we were re- presented in volleyball by Pat Barnes and Judy Reese, and in basketball by Gary Huff, Randal Leach, Ed Douglas, Lee Lewis, Tom Baldwin, Ancel Lewis and Doug Ross. On Friday, April 13, the seniors presented their play The Skeleton Walks , a cast of 10 characters. Then after Vesper Services and Commencement the seniors took their trip to Florida. And now underclassmen, we leave Ironton High to you and we hope you will appreciate it as we have. 12 MARY ANN ALEXANDER F.H.A......................2-3-4 Girls' Chorus ...............3-4 Pep Club ......................1 Tiger Talks Staff..............4 Library Club...................4 TOM BALDWIN Student Council . . . 1-2-3-4 Tiger Staff 1-4 Basketball .... 1-2-4 Cape Scholastic Meet . . 2-3-4 National Honor Society . . 3-4 Queen Escort ..................1 Valentine King.................4 Junior Play .................. 3 Student Council Vlce-President4 Perfect Attendance ............3 Basketball Queen Escort ... 4 Senior Play....................4 MARTHA ALLGIER Perfect Attendance.......... 3 Library Club................ 4 F.H.A....................2-3-4 BILL BARNES F.F.A...............1-2-3-4 Basketball..............1-2-3 Mixed Chorus ...........1-2-4 Boys Chorus............1-2-4 Cape Judging Contest . . . 3-4 JO ANN ALLMON Queen Candidate................3 Girls' Chorus .... 1-2-3-4 Mixed Chorus............. 2-3-4 Band .................1-2-3-4 Pep Squad ................1-2-3 Junior Play...................3 Associate Art Editor (Tiger) . 4 Art Staff (Tiger).............3 F.H A......................2-3-4 Senior Play ................. 4 PATRICIA ANN BARNES I.H.S.........................1 Barnwarmin' Queen .... 4 National Honor Society ... 4 Associate Tiger Editor ... 3 Editor-In-Chief. The first event in the class of 1952 was the selection of a candidate for queen. The boys chose pretty and charming Patty Ann Barnes. The freshman class chose the theme Belle of I.H.S. for their first float. We came in last in the float contest but still having a lot of courage the freshmen worked very hard that night and crowned Patty Ann I.H.S. queen of 1952-53! Our freshman year we were represented in extra-curricular activities by the following: BAND-Hilda Jones, Jo Ann Allmon, Randal Leach, Gary Huff, Lynn Denton, David Mocre, SPORTS-(Volleyball)-Judy Reese, (Basketball)-John Williams. When school started in the fall there was a very happy sophomore class waiting to enter the halls of I.H.S. for their second year. Then carnival time rolled around again the boys chose another very attractive and sweet girl. Sue Lee as our candidate for queen. The class decided the theme of our float should be Pretty Baby . But again our float placed fourth and we were also unsuccessful in the queen contest. This year our class was very well represented in extra-curricular activities and another year went down, as a big memory. Then on September 6, 1954, sixty-five juniors returned to I.H.S. This being a year full of different and new goals for us to reach. This year the boys chose another attractive and cute girl, Jo Ann Almon to represent our class as candidate for queen. Our float theme for this year was Garden of Roses . We were all very proud of this float and it placed second along with our candidate. Then came the junior play which was entitled One Mad Night . This too was a great success. When school started in September 1955, fifty-eight seniors were quite active. The senior rings arrived. Then we elected class officers which ware as follows; President-Tom Baldwin ; Vice-President-Randal Leach; Secretary-Patty Ann Barnes; Treasurer-Douglas Ross; Student Council Members-Sue Lee and Jim Moses. As carnival time filled the air, the boys chose Hilda Jones as candidate for queen. In the parade, our float was called The Viking Princess , but we came in fourth. With much fight still in our heart, and working as hard as we could, we crowned Hilda I.H.S. queen for 1955- 56. We were represented in mixed chorus, girls' chorus, tiger talks staff, tiger staff, F.H.A., F.F.A., pep squad, and many other activities. The senior play The Skeleton Walks was another success and was enjoyed by all. Working hard and finally making enough money, we took our senior trip. Our trip to Florida was enjoyed by all and was an experience we will never forget, thus, ending four happy and full but much enjoyed years of the lives of the class of 1955-56. Yes, underclassmen, we enjoyed our high school days in Ironton. We now leave it to you to enjoy for your remaining years. It is here that we learned and achieved part of our goals. We hope you will enjoy and appreciate it, as we have. tg56 (Sent or K ems BEST ALL AROUND Randal Leach Sue Lee WITTIEST Jo Ann Allmon Lee Lewis MOST POPULAR Douglas Ross Hilda Jones 24 Senior Vi ills Mary Ann Alexander wills her ability to visit the boys' phys. ed. class fourth hour to anyone having a crush on a hero next year. The Ironton Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America held its first meeting on September 12. The purpose of the meeting was to elect officers. A formal ceremony of initiation of new members and installation of officers was held in October in the study hall. Miss Kbechig, advisor, helped to or- ganize the evening's program. Presid- ing over the meeting was Sue Lee, president for her second year. The new members of F.H.A. recited the creed and the eight purposes were given as a candle which symbolized each purpose was lit. The new members provided entertainment and refresh- ments were served. The sub-district meeting was held at Ironton on November 11. Mr. Ochs, chapter father, sang Mammy and the jazz band played. Mrs . Hugh Nutt was guest speaker. Djring December the F.H.A. spon- sored several activities including an all school caroling and a Christmas Dance. Both, were thoroughly enjoyed. The annual F.H.A. Chili supper was held on March 20. The proceeds helped to finance the organization . A happy occasion in F.H.A. was the election of Carol Earls as historian of the Missouri Association of Future Homemakers of America. Carol was selected from two candidates who re- presented this district. Elinor Grayum also attended the state meeting on April 14, to sing in the state F.H.A. choir. This has certainly been a suc- cessful year for F.H.A. as proven by the Award of Merit received by us. Many worthwhile projects have been carried out, and every member feels she has gained much from her member- ship in F.H.A. TWINS?? LOOKS LIKE HARD WORK! LOOKS GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT! Killian, a student may become a member only by a unanimous vote of the faculty . Other qualifications a student must possess are: Leadership, Service, Scholarship, Character, and he must be in the Junior or Senior class and have maintained an S average in his work at school. 62 The Student Council under the leadership of their capable president Doug Ross and sponsor Mr. Brinkopf was very successful in carrying out their many projects this year. At their first meeting the officers elected were, Vice-President, Tom Baldwin, Secre- tary, Sue Lee; and Treasurer, Sue Jones. Working together the council planned and carried out their projects which included: Student Council-Faculty dinner. Clean-up Drive, Rural School Visitation and supervi- sion of all school parties.
