Possibly the most important is the students. Without their loyalty and untiring efforts Iron ton High School would not be the excellent school that it is today. The future and success of I ronton High School rests squarely upon the shoulders of you students. May your efforts never falter and your loyalty never cease and that IHS continues to be the best. BLAINE E. STECK. Principal Northwest Missouri State (B.S. in Education) University of Missouri (Master in Education) HERBERT GRAYUM, Superintendent Southeast Missouri State (B. S. in Education) University of Missouri (Master in Education) As we bring to a close another school year we leave behind a record for future students of Ironton High School to see. We would like to believe that each year’s record is better than the preceding one. At least we know that to date each suc- ceeding issue of the TIGER has been better. The current issue should be no exception since the staff has worked long and faith- fully at the ir task. 7 MR. GLENN ALLMON Industrial Arts Art MR. HENRY DEETER Social Studies MRS. It was easy to guess that this would be a record-breaking class. When carnival time came, the boys very wisely chose Carol Vickery to be queen can- didate for the class. The class worked hard and long on the float, “School Daze ' which placed third in the float contest, in ticket sales we placed second and in queen contest fourth. During our first year we had many students in the extracurricular activities offered by the school. In band we were represented by: Sue Freegard, Don Jones, Ron Jones, Johnny Keith, Sue Pollock, Bernard Smith, Bernice Smith, and Bert Townsend. Norma Bird and Irma Turner, from our class, played volleyball that year. The boys on the basketball squad from our class were: Frank Lashley, Jack Reese, Denny Tims, and Terry White. We were also represented in mixed chorus, boys glee club and girls’ glee club. Several boys from our class were also members of F.F.A. During our sophomore year we also had much success as a class. Eleanor DeMent was chosen as candidate for carnival queen. Our float, “Cinderella,” was very beautiful and placed second in the float contest. We placed fourth in the queen contest. This year again our class was well represented in many activities. As juniors we were even more successful than in the previous years. At carnival time our queen candidate, Nadine Dillard, placed second, and our float “Merry Oldsmobile “ won second. In ticket sales this year our class was first and set a record by selling more than any other class had ever sold.' Again a large number from our class was represented in school activities. Also, our class sponsored the prom which was built around the theme of “The Gay Nineties.” The Junior play, “Girl Shy,” was a great success and again our class did very well on ticket sales. When school started for our senior year, our class elected the following officers: president. Bob Berkley; vice-president, Bernard Smith; secretary, Rosalie Bay; treasurer, Carol Vickery; student council members: Bob Newman, Susan Freegard, and Denny Tims. With these officers to guide us we went through the most successful, busiest, and perhaps the happiest of all our high school years. Our carnival queen was Rosalie Bay. Our float which placed first was the very beautiful “Stairway to Paradise.” Rosalie was crowned carnival queen to reign for one year. Our class, again did very well in ticket sales, as again we placed first. Most of the members of our class were busy in school activities. This year also we were represented in band, mixed chorus, and the glee clubs. Also we were well represented in volleyball, basketball, F.H.A., F.F.A , pep squad and other activities. The Senior play “Finders Creepers” was a big hit and was enjoyed by everyone. During the year our class together with the freshman class sponsored an all-school Sadie Hawkins Party. A. recreational activities. The “Papa Picnic,” sponsored this year was a huge success. At this annual affair a covered dish suppor is held in the gymnasium where every boy brings his father and the importance of the F. F A. work is stressed along with games and fun. The Barnwarming was successful with a large attendance. Sue Jones, date of Robert Winkler, was crowned queen of the “Barnwarming” for 1954-1955. This year the chapter sponsored a money-making activity which was manufacturing con- crete feed troughs and selling them. This created a job for everyone and a lot of work was put into the project. A formal ceremony of initiation for new members and officers was held October 11, in the Study Hall. The meeting was called to order by Miss Meta Koechig, advisor. Sue Lee was then installed as president and presided over the meeting. The new members of F.H.A. recited the creed, and the seven aims were given as each candle was lit which symbolized them. After a skit was given by the new members, the re- freshments were served. On September 24, a chili supper was sponsored by F.H.A. The proceeds were used to help achieve financial success of the organization. The sub-district meeting was held at Farmington, November 8. Ironton pre- sented a skit on one of the National Goals. F.H.A. sponsored a Christmas dance in the Gym, which was beautifully decorated in holiday fashion. Refreshments were served. On January 24, Miss Ruth Freegard visited the F.H.A. and told of her vast ex- perience as a Home Economics teacher in the Japan's Women’s University. March 5, F.H.A. members traveled to Crystal City to the District meeting. Carol Vickery, District president, presided over the meeting. Sue Lee served as hostess and Judy Reese was elected District Parliamentarian with Betty Jones and Carol Earls acting as voting delegates. The F.H.A. members feel that they have achieved very much from this worth- while organization during this year. • t FRONT ROW: Barbara Opperman. They beat such teams as Fredericktown. Valley and Bismarck. The Tigers will lose three boys from the “First Five”, but there is still a brighter season ahead of them next fall. This year’s basketball record was an improvement over last year’s. The “Ironton Tigers” went out to win a record of 10 wins and 8 losses. The “B” Team had the same record with 10 wins and 8 losses. Everyone was filled with anxiety as the basketball queen and her attendants were chosen. This was on February 16, between the “A and ‘B games with Bismarck. The Tigers chose as their queen pretty Carol Jean Vickery. For Carol's attendants they chose Carol Marie Earls and Sue Jones. Carol Jean was escorted to her throne by Coach Stringer, who also crowned her. The attendants were escorted by the Tiger co-captains, Jack Reese and Terry White. The Tigers' mascot was present to supervise the crowning of the new queen. The loud, long-lasting applause which followed the selection of the queen and her attendants proved that the students, parents, and patrons considered it a wise choice.
