National Honor Society A chapter of National Honor Society has been organized this year for students of Ironton High School. This is a national or- ganization sponsored by the National Association of Secondary- School Principals. There are now more than five thousand chap- ters in schools throughout the United States. Each chapter is organized with four main objectives in view. The first aim is to create enthusiasm for scholarship. The next is to stimulate a desire to render service. The third purpose of each chapter is to promote worthy leadership. The final objective of the National Honor Society is to encourage the development of character in pupils. Thus, in order to become a member of the organization, a student must have these four qualifications: schol- arship, service, leadership, and character. Members of the organization must be in the Junior or Senior class. A member must have maintained a grade average of “S in his academic work throughout his high school years. From the students who have maintained this scholastic average, the faculty of Ironton High School will choose those students who also fulfill the other three requirements of service, leadership, and character. This year, there have been six students from the Junior and Senior classes selected for membership in the National Honor Society. The members from the Junior class are Nellie Pollock, Curtis Leach, and Ann Talmage. From the Senior class, Faithie Guelzow, Jean Marie Foster, and Audrey Webb were chosen for this honor. This is an organization in which a student may well be proud of his membership. When a student is proud of something, he will thereby create the interest of others in that thing. If every- one's interest in the National Honor Society is stimulated, we shall have a desire to reach those final objectives for which a school is constantly working--scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The officers for the year were: President............................John Smith Vice-President....................Faith Guelzow Secretary.........................Wanda DePew Treasurer.........................Ann Whelehon Student Council.....................Betty Owens Johnny Collins Sponsors.................••••••.....Miss Reese Mr. Slover This makes the fourth year for John Smith to hold the office of President and for Wanda DePew to hold the secretarial position. It is the second year in succession for Faith Guelzow to be Vice-President, Ann Whelehon to be Treas- urer, and Betty Owens to be a Student Council Member. When the biggest event of the year (The Halloween Carnival) rolled around, the boys showed good judgment in choosing popular Audrey Webb for their queen candidate. We really “went places” in the carnival this year, taking first in the queen race, first in ticket sales, first in country store articles, and fourth in the float race. Our float was built around the theme of “Lavender and Old Lace.” Audrey, our queen, was dressed in purple and white, our class colors, as an old-fashioned girl carrying a little lace parasol. This is the third year in succession for us to take first place in the queen contest. Our Sophomore year we crowned Patsy Eidson, our Junior year Carolyn Koenig, and this year Audrey Webb. In volleyball we were represented by Mary Lou Strever, Captain, Ann Whelehon, Dolores Sitze, and Carolyn Koenig on the “A” team. Senior girls represented on the “B team were Ruth Reed Fitts and Patsy Cloin. The mana- gers for the year were Betty Berryman and Donna Kimmell. The Seniors on the basketball squad were Bob Griffe, Bruce Haig, and James Trolinger. David Larkin was the manager. The Tiger Talks staff was made up of the secretarial practice girls, all of them Seniors. Several of the Seniors were on the Black and Gold staff. Other organizations that are represented by Seniors are the F. F. A., F. H. A., and Mixed Chorus or Glee Club. In our Junior year, we presented the play, “Here Comes Charley.” The proceeds of the play were used to finance the Junior-Senior Prom, given annually for the Seniors. The gym was beautifully decorated around the theme of “Moon- light and Roses.” This year we presented a very enjoyable play. The proceeds of the play were used to finance the Senior trip. Here we are again at the end of another school year, but this time we are leaving I. H. S. for the last time. We are leaving all the memories of I. H. S. behind us but not forgetting a one of them. As we leave the crowded halls of I. H. S. to make room for the other students who will come in next year and years following, we hope that they will have as happy and successful years as we have had in the last four. Yes, Undergrads, we can truthfully say that we have had four happy and successful years. 23 Senior Wills Raymond Arnold - wills his blond hair to Ronald Palmer. Although this number has decreased somewhat, we still have a large class. We met early in the year and elected the following class members as officers: President....................................Bill OePew Vice-President............................Stanley Coad Secretary...................................Carol Dement Treasurer...........................Barbara Reese Student Council Members....................Nellie Pollack Curtis Leach Soon time for the Carnival rolled around and it was time to select queen candidates. The Junior boys very wisely chose Carol Dement for our candidate. Our float, which placed second in the float parade contest, was “Little Bo- Peep. Other ratings we received in the contests were fourth place in the ticket sales and country store articles and third in the queen race. During the November Invitational Tournament, the Junior Class operated the “Eats and Drinks booth. We made $928.00 of which $378.00 was profit. This amount surpassed any other made in the past. Only through the hard work and co-operation that was put forth by the class was this obtained. On March 7, 1952, we presented our play, “Thank You, Mr. Parker. Every- one seemed to enjoy seeing and working with this play that was such a success. Among the other activities for the Juniors were the selection of class rings and Junior-Senior Prom. Representing the Junior Class in band this year were Bonnie Hardy, Ruth Jones, Rosalee Kieth, Shirley Howard, Donna Denton, Carol Dement, Mary Russell, Betty Harland, Curtis Leach, Nellie Pollack, Marian Ruble, and Celeste Meyer. The following officers, elected this year, took charge immediately: President...............................Faith Guelzow Vice-President............................Ann Talmage Secretary-Treasurer...................Marilyn Carls Sergeant-at-Arms.........................Jean Pearson Scrap Book Chairman......................Lucy DePew Many new members were initiated into the Future Homemakers of America at a very impressive candlelight ceremony. The all-day F. H. A. District meeting was attended by all members on November 2nd. The Ironton Chapter was in charge of group singing and also gave two very enjoyable skits. The annual F. H. A. Christmas dance was held in the gymnasium on December 21st, and was a great success. The gym was noticed for its very beautiful decorations. The Ironton F. H. A. gave a skating party at the Farmington roller rink for the F. F. A., according to tradition. The Ironton Chapter has had a very successful year, and all mem- bers would like to express their appreciation to both Mrs. Fleming, our sponsor, and Mrs. Talmage, our chapter mother, for their wonder- 41 ful help and co-operation. f F. F. A. The Ironton chapter of the Future Farmers of America has again enjoyed a happy year of work and recreation. Of all the activities which the organization has participated in this year, we feel that the most important was the purchasing of a popcorn machine. This is a nice looking machine, and although it is not brand new, it is a late model, and in excellent condition. Although this machine does a much better job of popping the corn than our for- mer one did, its main feature is its capacity. With our old machine, we could seldom meet the people's demand, but with this one we can easily supply our customers. Again this year our annual “barnwarmin was a huge success. A long, crooked tunnel of baled hay was the entrance to the Gym. When inside one could take part in any of the many activities, such as table tennis, square dancing, checkers, and other games. About 9:30, the “barnwarmin” queen was elected. This year we elected Janis Leach for our F. F. A. queen. After the crowning of the queen, refreshments were served, and the party was brought to a close. We believe that everyone who attended this year's “barnwarmin” enjoyed himself thoroughly. Last fall some of the F. F. A. boys entered their farm projects in the Iron County Fair. Most of them were very successful, and boys who were awarded prizes found that showing livestock at a fair can be profitable. If the fair becomes an annual occasion (which we understand it is) we are hoping that even more F. F. A. boys will show their stock, for it is educational, profitable, and a very good means of advertise- ments . This year we again had our “Papa Picnic,” a party which is at- tended by the F. F. A. boys and their fathers. It consisted of many amusing games and contests among the boys and their guests, with a huge feast at the end of the evening. Everyone present reported a very good time. Some other F. F. A. activities this year were hayrides, skating parties, a trip to the Missouri State Fair, a trip to the F. F. A. summer camp on the Lake of the Ozarks, and a summer camping trip on the Black River. The local Chapter's officers this year were: President....................Jim Trolinger Vice-President...............Reggie Henry Secretary.....................Leroy Pogue Treasurer.....................Bill Siebert Reporter..............................Bill DePew Sentinel....................Clinton Miller Advisor......................Harold Klaus 46 I. H. S. Music Department The I. H. S. Music Department, under the direction of Mr. Jean Chard, has had a very successful year. The band has par- ticipated in many activities. Among these have been playing at the home basketball games, and presenting a school assembly. The annual Christmas concert was a huge success. The band played a number of beautiful selections, with the aid of the instrumental soloists, Toni Thiele and Max White. Evelyn Schmidt played a piano solo between the band and chorus numbers. As her solo was ending the curtains parted and the Mixed Chorus sang selections from Handel’s MESSIAH with Ann Talmage sing- ing a solo. It was a concert that will long be remembered. Under the very able assistance of our director, the depart- ment presented a well planned program at the Spring Contest held at Cape Girardeau. Many honors were received by the de- serving musicians. The year 1951-52 will long be remembered by everyone. % 47 Mixed Chorus FIRST ROW: Ann Whelehon, Betty Berryman. Delores Sitze, Audrey Webb. Opal Swaringim. Nancy Pollock. Nellie Pollock. School Ends Parade The twenty-fifth I. H. S. parade was held on October 2 9th. It was a damp and rainy day for the parade, but this didn’t decrease the enthusiasm. The parade got under way by two o’clock in the afternoon. The parade was led by the state patrol, followed by the band wagon. Next in line was the Freshman float with the theme, “School Daze.” Carol Vickery was dressed in a green and white pinafore. The float also consisted of a large apple with books, pencils and rulers. The Sophomore float came next bearing the name, “The H. M. S. Sophomore.' The float was in the shape of a boat with the candidate, Frances Ray, sitting on the top deck. Frances wore a white strap- less gown. The celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary brought another float entry. The Alumni Association built a float for the former queens. Sixteen queens were able to be present for the affair. Following the alumni float was the Junior float. The theme was “Little Bo-Peep, ' with Carol Dement attired in a red costume with white pantaloons and matching red hat. The float was adorned with mache lambs. The Senior float came last but not least. Audrey Webb, Senior candidate, rode on a float known to everyone as “Lavender and Old Lace. The float was constructed of a huge fan of silver and a background of lace doilies and matching parasol. The parade traveled slowly through Ironton, Arcadia and Pilot Knob. After the parade returned, everyone awaited the judge’s decisions. The tension was relieved when the floats were ranked as: Sophomores first. Juniors second. Freshmen third, and Seniors fourth. 53 SILVER ANNIVERSARY FLOAT 55 FORMER I. H. S. QUEENS CORONATION OF MISS AUDREY WEBB. I. H. S. CARNIVAL QUEEN Coronation The twenty-fifth anniversary carnival was held in the gymna- sium on October 29th. The last counting of queen votes was held at 10:30 p. m. At 11:00 p. m., the sounding of the “Triumphal March from Aida” began the coronation procession. Leading the procession was little Elaine DeVore and David Wallen. Next came Carolyn Koenig, the retiring queen, wearing a red velvet formal with a white orchid corsage. The retiring queen was escorted by John Smith, Student Council President. The master of ceremonies, John Smith, announced the former queens as they marched in. There were sixteen of the twenty-five former queens present, including Cleo Eye, the first I. H. S. queen. Then the 1951-52 queen candidates approached the stage. The Freshman candidate, Carol Jean Vickery, entered first. Carol Jean wore a light green formal with a corsage of pink rose buds. She was escorted by Denny Tims. Frances Ray, the Sophomore candidate, followed, wearing a light blue gown with yellow rose buds. Her escort was Ronald Grayum. The third to enter was the Junior candidate, Carol Dement. Carol wore an aqua formal enhanced by a corsage of yellow rose buds. Bob Archambault was her escort. At last came the future I. H. S. queen, Audrey Webb, the Senior candidate. Audrey wore a gown of iris organdy with a yellow rose bud corsage. She was escorted by Bruce Haig. Carolyn Koenig stepped down from the throne as Audrey Webb took her place. John Smith crowned Audrey Webb the I. H. S. queen for 1951-52. The Sophomore candidate came second in the race; Junior, third; and Freshman candidate, fourth. The 1951 silver anniversary carnival was proclaimed a success The gross intake was $3,097.02. Black and Qold King and Queen Again this year, as has been the custom in the past, the student body held its annual election to choose the most outstanding Senior boy and girl as King and Queen of Black and Gold. Faithie Guelzow was chosen as queen. She is indeed worthy of this honor. She has taken part in many school activities. Because of her capability she has held the office of Vice-Presi- dent of her class for three years and Treasurer of her class her Sophomore year. She has been a member of the TIGER TALKS staff for three years. Associate Editor of Black and Gold last year and is Editor this year. She’s been a Future Homemaker for three years and is President of that association now. She was on the volleyball team two years and has been a member of the Glee Club all four years. Besides the many services she has rendered, she has a very good scholastic record. She has been on the honor roll during all her schooling and each year has been one of the top students in her class. With her pleasing personality and sweet disposition, Faithie is well deserving of the honor Black and Gold Queen for 1952. John Smith, one of the most popular Senior boys, was chosen king of Black and Gold. John has been an active student all four years. He has held the honor of President of his class for four consecutive years. He was Vice-President of the Student Body last year and is President this year. John was on the Junior High basketball team his Freshman year and was on the basketball team his Sophomore and Junior year. He sings in the Glee Club and is an exceptionally good bass singer. He was, also, a member of the TIGER TALKS staff and a member of the Junior play cast last year. Because of his friendliness and fine character it would have been hard to pick one better qualified than John Smith—King of Black and Gold. 1952.
