Trustees and Officials worked increasinglu fl EARL S RICKER President DR WILLIAM M STAERKEL Superintendent FOLLOWING THE PASSAGE of a bond providing 51,925,000 for the construction of a new iunior high school on the former Oberly Estate, the Board of Educa- tion moved swiftly to approve plans for it and the en- largement and rehabilitation of First Avenue and Richard Henry Dana Intermediate schools to accommodate grades 7-9 during the 1960-61 school year. During the year lust closing, William O. Merritt be- came a member of the Board. He replaced Fordyce W. Cowing, and began his duties January 13 serving the remaining months of Mr Cowing s term Many facets of school policy and operation have been considered and acted upon by Board members who have given unselfushly of their own time for the betterment of the Arcadia Schools They are to be con gratulated on their leadership throughout the year DR A W NISSON Secretary COMPLETING HIS THIRD year as chief ad ministrative officer Dr William M Staerkel has concerned himself not only with the planning of the new lunlor high school and related building prolects but has been a leader In the strength ening of the curriculum at all grade levels Under his guidance all Arcadia schools have critically evaluated course offerings and contin ued to Improve the instructional program
