Hugo Reiid Adobe AfTer The founding of The Mission San Gabriel, The surrounding land holdings were divided by The padres into ranchos. OuT of all These ranchos, iT is The Rancho Sanfa AniTa ThaT sTands aparT from The oThers in fame and glamour. IT was imporTanT in ThaT iT had an unusual abundance of waTer for a semi-arid land. In 1833, The missions losT much of Their power, and The following year a young Scofsman moved To The Town of Los Angeles noT far from The mission, in order To sTarT a Trading company. There The young man, Hugo Reid, fell in love wiTh an Indian widow working for Dona Perez, who had a small rancho near The Rancho Santa AniTa. He was married in 1837, and abouT four years laTer The firsT person To obfain an official granT To The fabulous rancho. AlmosT immediafely Reid converfed The marsh above The upper cenTer of The rancho inTo a lake, and There he builT his home, now known as The Hugo Reid Adobe. This became The adminisfrafive cenTer of The exTensive lands he owned. However, six years laTer he was forced To sell The rancho, on accounT of financial difficulTies. When E. J. Lucky Baldwin Took over The rancho, he added a second building on The siTe of The adobe and conTinued To use These buildings as The adminisTraTive cenTer of The vasT rancho. With a continuing concern for Arcadia students, they have made every effort to provide fine facilities and an excellent staff of educators. Egly The Assistant Superintendents, through their ability in their special fields, have provided excellent educa- tional services and sound business management in the school district. Superintendent Dr. William Max Staerkel Having assumed leadership of Arcadia Schools almost a year ago Staerkel has delved into many of the problems facing the District. His warm per- sonality and ready smile have made him a well- known figure on campus, where he has frequently observed the crowded conditions of the school. QQ'
