REMEMBER THE DAY WE LEFT NEWPORT. RHODE ISLAND? IT WAS THE NINTH DAY OF JUNE, NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE, SIXTEEN THIRTY, TO BE EXACT. THE SKY WAS OVERCAST. IT HAD BEEN RAINING SOFTLY ALL MORNING. THE MEN WERE STRANGELY YET UNDERSTANDABLY SILENT. AND FEW THERE WERE TO LOOK BEHIND AS THE COAST FELL OUT OF SIGHT BUT THEN THE SPIRIT OF THE USS ARCADIA ASSERTED ITSELF AS MORE THAN FIFTEEN THOUSAND TONS OF WORKSHOPS. ENGINES AND ENERGY WENT PLUNGING AHEAD INTO THE SEAS. THE HUM OF THE ENGINES AND THE LILT OF THE GENT- LY PITCHING SHIP WERE REECHOING IN THE SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY HEARTS. THIRTEEN HUNDRED ARMS SETTLING TO WORK. OFF IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. THE SIXTH FLEET WAS WAITING FOR THE USS ARCADIA. WE WERE ON OUR WAY.
