To give the church learned priests with the real sacerdotal spirit was the goal of Bishop d'Aviau, Archbishop of Vienne, when, the revolutionary storm having passed, Christian France began to re- vive. The prudent Archbishop, therefore, started an establishment destined to ensure the restoration of the clergy from the very start. In 1798, he chose a village, St. Symphorion de Mahur, hidden in the mountains of Vivorais. With joseph Bouvier-La- pierre as pastor, he established a college whose purpose was to teach Latin. The college moved in 1802 to Annonay, a part of the diocese of Vienne, when a concordat between Napoleon and the papacy had assured peace to the Church in France. The teaching staff lived under a rule and were called the Teaching Priests of An- nonayf' In 1822, ten priests thought it advisable to become a religious community and thus provide for the continuity of their work. was located in the parish of St. Basile so that the priests became known as the Priests of St. Basil. The first Basilians came to America in 1850 at the invitation of the Archbishop of Toronto. Their first endeavor in the United States was a parish in Detroit in 1886, Aquinas was entrusted to the con- gregation in 1937. The general aim of the Basilians, in common with all religious institutes, is the glory of God and the sanctification of its members. The particular aim of the Basilian Fathers is the welfare of souls, especially through the education of youth. Besides teaching, the works of the Congregation present a wide variety. In 1935, the first priest was appointed to the Mexican Missions in Texas. At the present time this Mission is made up of four Mission centers from which the missionaries serve the surrounding area. We are proud and happy to have spent our high school years with a group of men who uphold and carry on such a great tradition.
