5 5,1 CWA! f .SZ AJ. EDICATION l i 'F 1 ! 52' 1 N M I I Q' 4 Early last Autumn, the people of the Dio- cese of Rochester honored their Bishop as he celebrated a most memorable occasion, the Silver Anniversary of his Episcopal Con- secration as a Bishop. At the same time we celebrated another joyous event, his Golden Anniversary as a priest. Twenty years ago, James E. Kearney was appointed Bishop of Rochester. Immediately after his arrival, he began to spread the word of Christ to his people. He built schools on the elementary, secondary and college levels. Following the command of Christ to teach the word of God to all, our Bishop has accomplished what was once regarded a dream. Through his sacrifice and efforts, Rochester has become an example to the Catholic world. And so, in sincere appreciation of his work here in Rochester, in gratitude for his sacrifices for his people, and as a tribute to his many accomplishments, we, the students of Aquinas Institute, dedicate our 1958 Arete to James E. Kearney, Bishop of Rochester. 4

In the Spring of 1953, His Holiness Pope Pius XII appointed the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Lawrence B. Casey Titular Bishop of Cea and Auxiliary to the Bishop of Rochester. This was a fitting honor to be bestowed on a man who has served his Creator so faithfully. Ordained a priest in june 1930, he was soon appointed Vice-Chancel- lor. For a number of years he also acted as secretary first to Archbishop Mooney, and later to Bishop Kearney. The title of Right Reverend Mon- signor was conferred on him in 1947 when he was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate. The year 1953 found him rector of Sacred Heart Ca- thedral. The following year he was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester to aid Bishop Kearney in carrying out Christ's commandg Go ye therefore and teach ye all nations. Since this time, we the people of Rochester have grown to realize the great honor given to us when Bishop Casey was appointed to this position,
