Sisters Stella, Raphael and Brendan have been associated with the Institute since its inception in 1925. Fathers Wilfred Kehoe, Hugh Haffev, Fergus Shee-hy and Oscar Regan are the Hasil-ian’s pioneers still on the staff. The Scholastic Year of 1916-17 saw 317 graduates leave Aquinas, all with New York State Regents diplomas. The number of graduates in 1947-48 is an all time high of 363. The whole student body taxes the Institutes capacity of 1725 students. Aquinas boasts of activity facili- ties. Spacious modern buildings surrounded by ample acreage house Aquinas students. The library holds 8,000 volumes; the auditorium seats 1,200 and the cafeteria is equipped to take care of the entire student body and staff. The gymnasium and multiple recreational facilities have long been taken for granted. The Aquinas Institute represents the tangible evidence, the practical attempt to work out the Christian ideals of education. Inspired by the motto of the Basilians, Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge,” the staff is ever pressing toward this threefold end. The 10

Joseph Wurzer as Director of Studies laid fast and deep the academic standards of Aquinas. In nineteen hundred and thirty-seven the Basiliau Fathers first came to Rochester. Aquinas had its first Basilian principle in Father John II. O’Loane, C.S.B. Our present principal. Father William Duggan, C.S.B. succeeded Father O’Loane in September, nineteen hundred and forty-three. Father Wilfred Murphy, C.S.B. and Fr. McC »ee, C.S.B. shouldered the academic administration during these years. Under our present Bishop, James E. Kearney, Rochester’s Bishop of Education,” the Aquinas Institute has expanded and flourished. September, nineteen hundred and forty-six saw the opening of the Aquinas Freshmen Annex designed to house the ever increasing student body. Christian religion and its principles for living are ever before the student. not as another subject taught on an academic curriculum, hut as the force behind the teaching of the arts and sciences, permeating the disciplinary and academic life of the student. Aquinas aims first to teach our young men how to live. The school is seen not as a transition between family and industry, or the professions, not as a preparation for a life to be lived after graduation; hut as a school of living here and now, that has its roots in eternity. Fr. Donovan explains the my ' terics of higbcr mathematics. Fr. Kehoe's lecturing on Physic produces varied expressions on the faces of his class. Three sophomores fight for possession of the ball in a Physical Training class. Mr. Melody takes a rest and lets one of the boys try his hand at teaching Health.
