Under the patronage of— Thomas of qitin, teacher, doctor, philosopher and saint, the Aquinas Institute of liochester stands a beacon of Catholic living and secondary education. Creeled by the Catholic clergy and people of Ho-chester. the Institute has traditions deep-rooted in time and American ideals. The Aquinas Institute represents the blossoming of Catholic secondary educational facilities for boys, originally nurtured at the old Cathedral High School. Aquinas opened its doors for the first time on September the eighth, nineteen hundred and twenty - five, and hoasteil an enrollment of eight hundred and forty-six students. The very Reverend Thomas Hickey, then Rishop of Rochester and patron of the new project, appointed Rev. Win. Byrne, Ph.D. its first principal. Time saw’ Father Byrne succeeded hy Rt. Rev. Joseph Wurzer as Director of Studies laid fast and deep the academic standards of Aquinas. In nineteen hundred and thirty-seven the Basiliau Fathers first came to Rochester. Aquinas had its first Basilian principle in Father John II. O’Loane, C.S.B. Our present principal. Father William Duggan, C.S.B. succeeded Father O’Loane in September, nineteen hundred and forty-three. Father Wilfred Murphy, C.S.B. and Fr. McC »ee, C.S.B. shouldered the academic administration during these years. Under our present Bishop, James E. Kearney, Rochester’s Bishop of Education,” the Aquinas Institute has expanded and flourished. September, nineteen hundred and forty-six saw the opening of the Aquinas Freshmen Annex designed to house the ever increasing student body.
