“
Aquinas is coming together. It can be seen in the faces of the students. It can be felt in the air. The Aquinas family is sticking together. Whether the students are help- ing each other study for tests in the library, just talking things over at a lunch table, or sitting together on the brick wall behind the school, the Aquinian spirit of brotherhood and friendship prevails. The faculty and students of Aquinas feel good about themselves and about their school. All through the halls it can be seen: teachers helping students, students helping teachers, students helping each other. All the achievements of the Aquinas students and faculty show, whether it be through toil, triumph, or trials, when Aquinians stick together there's nothing they can't do... Let's face it, Aquinians aren't perfect. They do ridiculous, embar- assing things just like everyone else. Because the Aquinas family is a close one, they cau laugh with each other instead of at each other. Sometimes they say something that comes out wrong or they do something which they would rather not remember the next day. Through it all, the Aquinians stay together. The Aquinas spirit remains even through the trying times... Life at Aquinas isn't just all laughing and fun. The stu- dents have to work, too. What- ever the work might be, such as studying in the library, working after school for clubs, taking tests, or struggling over the computer, the Aquinas spirit of excellence drives them all; it drives them together. Nearly everything Aquinians do is for the good of the school and for the good of each other. It can be taking tests well to better the school's reputation, helping Mr. LeVert in his endless struggle to beautify the school's grounds, or making banners for the football games. Togetherness is still there, even when they have to work for it. It is there through the times of toil... Trust is the foundation for all families, and the Aquinas family is no exception. Mem- bers of the family trust each other. Students trust teachers and come to them when they have problems. The students tell secrets to each other. There is an air of openness and friend ship between Aquinians both in and out of school. The Aquinas family knows the true meaning of trust, and they are together through the trusting times... TOG-ETHER Triumph can be defined in many ways. It can be winning in sports, doing well on one of Sr. Linda Marie's tests, or finishing a very difficult prob- lem. Triumph is that warm feel- ing of accomplishment felt inside when a person does something particularly well. Aquinians know what triumph is. They are constantly winning at something. Their inner drive to achieve almost always leads to triumph. When Aquinians win, they cele- brate together. When they lose, they comfort each other. Every triumph is a shared one. Aquinas students and teachers are to- gether through the times of triumph... Tenderness is friendship between two people. It doesn't matter whether the two people are male or female or old or young. All that matters is the friendship between them. Many examples of tenderness and friendships are at Aquinas. There are friendships between students and teachers, between two teachers, and between two students. Friendships are the deepest roots of togetherness. These bonds will withstand misunderstandings, harsh words, and regretted actions. Aquinians are t gether through the tender times. . . Aquinians are always together. Even when they are apart physi- cally they are together in spirit. They think alike and dress alike, and yet all are individuals. They are held together and shaped by the spirit of Aquinas. Aquin- ians have suffered together, worked together, laughed together, cried together, and rejoiced together. The joys and pains of each person's four years at Aquinas will form a lasting memory that will affect the way that person thinks and acts in years to come. Even after everyone has gone their separate ways they will still be TOGETHER FOREVER. rnt i • ' - ■ Thomas Alexander Barry Blackston Tim Bond Karla Bonner Mike Brandsma Terry Brogan Ralph Buchanan Shenita Carrol Jennifer Gill Alien Goad Chris Gowdy Dawn Griffin Adriene Grzekiewicz Elaine Hammonds Karen Hernlen Kris Hesser Chuck Holt Courtney Howard Mary Beth Lake Lisa Larger Tarita Lee Zane Lieden A.J. The confusion of when to go to what class; what school rules I knew I'd forget about first, and did; all the new faces mixed with friends from my old elementary school. I don't think I'll ever forget any of it. “They say these are the most exciting days in our lives. I'd like to know who They are. Maybe one of these days I'll run into them, and probably, looking back at the people I knew and the crazy things we got away with, have to agree. If I learned anything here, it was that people are always changing. And how to bisect an acute triangle. I didn't want to come here. All my friends were at a public school, and I missed them something terrible during the first months. Now, with graduation on the way and a college to go to afterwards, I'm glad I'm here. I wish my old friends had the same chance. I can't wait to get out of here. Maybe for the first time in my life I realized you could talk to a teacher and they would talk back to you, as one person to another. Not as a superior to a little kid. That was a real relevation. Some of them you can even confide in, too. Those were the one's that made me feel like a human, not some faceless student. Lessons I learned in this place have to do with school stuff, yeah, but people also. You know, who to trust, who really cares about you, that kind of thing. Unfortunately, that can also mean I learned abut the liars and cheats and babies too. At least I know how to deal with them now. When I finally realized my girlfriends weren't going to the same college I was - when it finally struck home - I cried. I guess I'd gotten attached to them. Yeah, we fought but like sisters, not strangers. We always had each other. We always will but our destinies lie in different directions. 1 can't wait for our 10th Annual Reunion. I wonder which of the guys will have gone bald. ALEXANDER,THOMAS - NHS 3,4; Red Cross 2,3; Mixed Chorus 1; Math Club 1,2; Soccer 2,3,4; 90%NEDT 1,2. BELL,LANCE - VOCA Club 1. His ability to work well with the students; gaining their respect, at the same time making them comfortable with their new found intellectual and ath- letic skills, is one of his better traits. An incred- ible ascerbic wit is also one of his strongpoints. An alumni of Aquinas, he has shown much pride in coaching his girls on the strengths of good basket- ball strategy. Without his determination, our girls' team wouldn't be the same. You have given us so much, Mr. Whitfield. We thank you. This year, five stu- dents of the Aquinas fam- ily participated in a New York retreat to discuss the religious meaning of love. During the retreat, the students met Bro.John and Father Mark of the Salesians, who later came to Aquinas to talk on the topic of vocations with the student body. On February 19-21 thirteen students from Aquinas were invited to participate in the UN Sumulation at Georgia Southern College. This was the first year Aquinas participated in this activity. On the first day, the students at- tended an assembly and two workshops of their choice, with topics ranging any- where from global communism to interna- tional economics. For the next two days the students attended and participated fully in an actual United Nations simulation, where each student represented a different country. Aquinas would like to acknowledge Steve Grondin(representing Gambia) and Richard Kennedy(representing Bhutan) for their awards in the catagory of Honorable Mention for excellent debate and presen- tation . After four years Art is back at Aquinas. Its hard to imagine four years without student projects; without paintings in the halls,- without the strange sights of set-ups in Room 18..... but it happened. We're back now, hopefully to stay...the sounds of questioning voices, the slide shows of Master paintings of eras past, the smells of ink and paint, and above all, the sights of projects geared to make this school a little more comfortable, a little more beautiful, a little more like a school with pride and spirit should look. Here we are. Enjoy our triumphs, wonder over our imagination, please. But above all, learn from our spirit. 'Requiem', a one act play abou the horrors of war and its effects o humankind, was a big success. Casted out of the Masquers Clu and directed by Father Fitzpatrick, 'Requiem' won honors at the Regional Competition level. Congratulations to all those who acted, supported the cast by long hours of work and effort, and those who made the going easier through the times of trouble by thei inspiration. far m BOYS ESSAY ............... The 1985-86 year was a very eventful one. The hijackings of the TWA flights, the bombing of TWA flight 007 by the Russians, and the Achille Lauro's capture all brought internation al attention. In the Philipines, President Marcos was replaced by Corazon Aquino in a fight to the finish. President Reagan was operated on to have cancerous polyps removed from various parts of his anatomy. Their sense of fair play and spirit was challenged again and a- gain. Even the weather worked its wonders as a foil to their skills. During one of the more successful of their games a huge storm blew up, stopping the action. The game was called on account of the weather, and altho- ugh Aquinas' team was in the lead, we had to stop short of a sure victory. Despite all the trials and tribulations, both natural and unnatural, that our Soft- ball team encountered, they never stopped trying their hardest. Coach Eubanks was an inspiration and great help to them in honing their athletic abilities. Without his sure guidance as a coach, all would have come to naught. We thank you all for showing us what spirit and courage is all about. The cheerleaders, both varsity and junior varsity, worked hard this year. Many long hours of practice paid off at the games and the pep rallies. In addition to cheering, they do such things as promoting school spirit, helping incoming fresh- man find their way around the school, and helping on bingo nights. Without their energy, the varsity sports program at Aquinas wouldn't be the same.
