AQ UINAN—1972 Volume XV Aquinas High School Augusta, Georgia In the future soon, Beauty will find you . . . . . . And all of mankind together binding you and me. It shall be. (spirit) 4 What A friend we have in time. Gives us children, makes us wise. Tells us what to take and leave behind. And the gifts of growing old, Are the stories to be told. Of a feeling more precious than gold. (john denver) 5 There are places I’ll remember. All my life, though some have changed. Some forever, not for better. Some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments . . . (lennon-mc cartney) People searching for a l etter season Try to catch their moments on the run Always asking, wanting, what’s the reason? VVTiat do you want when you just want to have some fun. Your time is going much too fast. You’ve got to slow it on down or it won’t last . . . (spirit) The things you see . . . Rise, let us see you. Dawning is the day Miss, misty meadow. You will find your way. Wake up in the morning To yourself and leave This crazy world behind you. Listen we're trying to find you. (moody blues) 10 I don’t know what I’m searching for, I never have opened the door. Tomorrow might find me at last, Turning my back on the past. But time will tell, of stars that fell A million years ago. Memories can never take you back. Home, sweet, home. You can never go home anymore. All my life I Never really knew me ‘til today. Now I know why. I’m just another step along the way. I lie awake for hours I’m just waiting for the sun. Where the journey we are making Has begun. Don’t deny the feeling That is stealing through your heart, Every happy ending Needs to have a start. Weep no more for treasures You’ve been searching for in vain, ‘Cause the truth is gently falling Like the rain. High above the forest Lie the pastures of the sun, Where two that learned the secret Now are one. (moody blues) The sky is clearing The night has cried enough The sun he comes The world to soften up Rejoice, rejoice. We have no choice. But to carry on. (Stephen stills) Now I’ve been happy lately. Thinking about the good things to come. And I believe it could be Something good has begun. (cat Stephens) 14 We’ve only just begun, to live. White lace and promises A kiss for luck and we’re on our way. Before the rising sun, we fly, So many roads to choose, We start out walking and learn to run. Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way. Talking it over just the two of us, Working together day to day, together. And when the evening comes, we smile. So much of life ahead. We’ll find a place, Where there’s room to grow'. And yes, we’ve just begun. It offers training in oral presenta- tion and experience in the field of dramatics. 76 77 Languages The Language Department of Aquinas strives to produce a fluent control of the French and Span- ish languages as well as to create an appreciation of the cultural environment of the country. Un- der the direction of Brother Richard, Brother Paul, and Sister Ruth Marie, the students acquire a general knowledge of these romance languages. 78 English The four-year English program at Aquinas awakens in students an interest in and a curiosity about good reading by bringing them into personal contact with the universal truths of classic and modern literary works. Our English department offers all students the opportu- nity to produce effective, creative, analytical, and critical writing. By having students participate in various city and state wide speech contests such as the annual “Voice of Democracy” contest, the department tries to foster clear oral expression and logical thinking. 79 Our natural interest in the devel- opment of mankind led to the crea- tion of Social Studies. Aquinas spon- sors four fields of social studies in its efforts to keep the high school stu- dent not only aware of his environ- ment but also of the cultural growth of other nations as well. Through the studies of American and World His- tory, Current Events, and National Problems, the Aquinas student is given a basis on which to make him- self a better world citizen. 80 Religion The Religion Department strives to create an awareness of the need to serve God in our fellow man. The classes operate on a rotating schedule, giving students a variety of teachers to instruct them in their discussions of current problems relevant to our changing Church and to a con- fused society. The Physical Education Department, dedi- cated to the development of healthy bodies, personal fitness, and the increase of endurance and agility, enables all students to participate in sports that test individual as well as team skills and strength. 82 Art The Art Program, headed by Sister Ruth Marie, encourages creativity among the stu- dents through various projects including sculpture, painting, sketching, and pottery. 83 Practical Arts The Practical Arts Program presents students with an insight of what the world may one day ask of them. Bookkeeping and Account- ing, Economics, Typing, and Homemaking will soon prove to be, in times to come, as useful as they are interesting. 84 Sciences The Science Department of Aquinas presents a system of learning through experimentation. Its facilities provide the student with varied ex- periences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and allow them to explore their surroundings and in- quire into the nature of what they see. 87 ACTIVITIES 91 Top Left: Miss Sara Culpepper and Tom Velky; Miss Dori Bennett and Don Thorstad. With both male and female candidates in the running for the title, the results were as follows: second runners up—Dori Bennett and Don Jones, first runners up—Mayclare Logan and Bill O’Leary, and Senior Sweethearts, Linda O’Meara and Paul Graham. School Trip The long weekend at the end of February provided the ideal time for the girls’ trip to Florida. Staying in Orlando, excursions to nearby Cape Kennedy and Dis- neyworld, as well as hours under the sun on the beach contributed to an educa- tional and fun-fulled vacation. Hoad to the “Dock of the Bay.” Retreats Awareness. Look beyond yourself. Turn to your fellowman and see him for the first time. See the things around you and know them. There were discussions in small groups, midnight walks to the dock, moments of silence, Mass, fun, food, togetherness, all conducted in the pleas- antness of informality at St. John’s Center in Savannah. With plans as tentative as the results were unexpected, small groups of students began their retreats on Fridays to return the following Sunday, changed, either by the mere act of “get- ting away from it all”, or by some intangible ful- fillment attained through new insights. The Retreats took on new methods under the guidance of Br. Luke and one or two of the fac- ulty members, but varied little as far as hopeful outcome in comparison to retreats of former years. 99 Francie Boemer Wayne Cliett Ray C.linsld Ralph Monsalvatge Estelle Mulherin Terry Real The National Honor Society is comprised of students maintaining high scholastic excellence throughout high school. Coach McDevitt, with his competent coaching staff of Dan Black, back field coach, Tom Werrick, line coach, and Howard Willis, trainer, led the fighting Irish to the region 3-A playoff game. The team recorded a 6-5 record, the best the school has ever had. After losing 13 seniors from the year before, the Irish bounced back with great determination and hard work, clob- bering region foe Hancock-Central 44-0, the most points the Shamrocks have ever scored in a single game. The Irish next travelled to Metter and were stung by the strong Class A power, 22-0. Following this defeat, the Irish won their next three region games—beating Lincoln County High 13-6 in the wettest game of the season, knocking off Johnson County 12-0, and getting revenge on defending 3-A champs, Warren County, 13-0. The Irish, stepping out of their class, played defending sec- ond place AAA state team, Richmond Academy. After a hard fought first half, the Musketeers wore down the Irish and handed them a 40-13 loss. The Shamrocks then played AA Washington-Wilkes, losing 13-2. The Irish returned to their region in time for a 37-6 Home- coming victory over the Hephzibah Rebels. Travelling to Louisville, they defeated the War Eagles 14-7, and the Sham- rocks, were assured a playoff position. The regular season ended with a 17-0 loss at the hands of Harlem. Aquinas was invited to its first region playoff in its history. After tying Putnam County both offensively and defensively, the Aquinas squad suffered a heart-breaking loss by only two points. Although Aquinas did not win the region championship, Irish fans are now faced with a new trend in football— WINNING! 1971-72 Football Team FRONT KOVV: Joe Samulski— Manager, Jack Myers, Mickey Martz.
