1970 Volume XIII Presented by the Senior Class i N Aquinas High School Augusta, Georgia i A N That’s One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap For Mankind. Neil Armstrong When astronaut Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon on July 21, 1969, he marked the end of a long struggle to fulfill one of man’s oldest dreams. But with the end came a new beginning; now that man has landed on the Moon, he has reached the threshold to the stars and their unlimited possi- bilities. He must now take bigger strides for the future. Like the N.A.S.A. space program, we too are faced with obstacles which must be overcome. When solved, we must face new problems which continue to arise. In the light of this, the Aquinian staff has adopted as its theme the words of astronaut Armstrong. The cover, with its staircase leading into infinity, represents the steps we must take in life, of which our graduation is but one. We can never stop climbing those steps until we arrive at our Final Destination. The building has expanded because of the increase in enroll- ment. Each year brings with it new customs to be adopted and old ones to be passed on to newcomers. Along with these customs go many incidents not soon to be forgotten. Fond mem- ories of years spent in preparation for adult life make Aquinas not only a great school but an endeared Alma Mater. 4 7 8 MOSI REVEREND GERARD L. Science James Herzberg, Chris Strasbourg, and Richard Colley ex- plore the microscopic world. Man's quest for knowledge has driven him to probe the vast reaches of the universe. Endeavor- ing to stimulate this natural curiosity, the Science Department offers a variety of courses: Biology, the makeup of living things; Chemistry, physical and chemical changes discerned through experi- mentation; Physics, study of matter and energy; Psychology, exploration of the inner mind. Chemistry students demonstrate their ingenuity with their homemade molecular structures of various substances. Levert Hood and Tom O’Rourke labor through a physics experiment. Freshmen and Sophomores excitedly await a successful blast- off in Principles of Science. 70 The Psychology students test Tommy Willis’ ability to work the maze. Tom O’Rourke, Sr. Linda, Mary Beier and John Mastro- ianni take a day off school to tour the Savannah River Plant. Richard O’Leary and Loretta Leonard work on their expe- riment while Jamie Washington stares ahead in disbelief. 71 Freshman biologists study slides. Roger Thellcn shows Mrs. Kearns what the results of her dissected frog should be. Mathematics Consisting of x and y in Algebra I, proofs and theorems in geometry, sine and cosine in Algebra II, accounting in bookkeeping, P.M.I. proofs and vectors in Senior math, mathematics is consis- tently a progressive subject. As one area is mas- tered, another is added to or developed from the first. With this variegated background in mathe- matics, students of Aquinas may fill the new computerized jobs of today’s society. Dennis Mertins, Bernard Bailey, Barbara Cody and Richard Craig enjoy graphing trig functions. Algebra is so intriguing that Brother George’s Freshman class is reluctant to pose for Aquinian. 72 Mrs. Kearns’ Freshman Math class attacks their assignment happily. Mr. Vic Brodeur, Lecturer, tries his best to interest the Book- keeping class in computers. Brother James shows Gay Martin how “trivial” Modern In- troductory Analysis can be. Pat Welsh, Mary Rose Longtin, Tom Beier, and Pat O'Rourke try to prove some Geometric theorems. 73 At a meeting of the English Department: Sr. Francita, Mr. Michael Maher, Chairman, Sr. Rose, Mrs. O’Connell, Mr. Neal, and Brother Gilbert. Pat Sherlock, Debra Williamson and David Rice diagram sentences in grammar class. English Team teaching was launched successfully in the English Department this year. In this system, the students are taught composition, literature, grammar and etymology. The week is equally divided between literature and composition, with one day of grammar. Since the teachers instruct what they specialize in, the students receive a better education. 74 Ed Sturckcn, Cecelia Thompson, Pat Lawrence and Cindy LaMar present an explanation of the fishing rod to Sister Rose’s Speech class. Research for a term paper is assigned to composition classes. Freshmen strive to perfect their English compositions. Freshmen Donald Pollard, Dale Villemain and Tim Smith enjoy reading short stories. Mike Stetz and Gladys Scott lead discussion on Moby Dick. Ann Watkins, Bruce Jackson, Roberta Renick and Alvin Bryant scan poetry in Senior English literature. Marlcen Zeller and Steve Shirey dramatize a play. 75 Freshman Religion class plans Bible Vigil with the theme of discovering Christ in nature and in people. The Thanksgiving Bible Vigil was a unique experience for the Sophomore class. Religion This year winessed a great upheaval in the Re- ligion Program. In spite of this, Aquinas continues to guide its students another step toward adult- hood in Christ. Freshmen and Sophomores studied basic morals and religious teachings. Junior and Senior classes had three main topics of study: Communication Arts, Marriage, and Contemporary Human Affairs. These courses set guidelines for the students to make decisions about themselves and their future. An original motion picture with sound was made by Leroy Washington, Mike Dean and Greg Bowles for Sr. Jeanene's Religion class. The Modern Communication of records is explored by the Senior Religion class. Sophomores arc “overjoyed with Father Stranc’s lecture on life. 76 Rosemary Roper carves out plaster statuette. Students work on creative masks in Sr. Ruth Marie’s art class. (Pope Pi as xil) 77 Patti Dineen, Loretta Leonard, and Ricky Bowles set up sculpture exhibition in the library. Through diligent practice, students improve typing skills. Mrs. O’Connell advises Margie Smith on pattern cutting. Embroidery is taught in homemaking class. Business In addition to the college preparatory curriculum, Aquinas offers a business program to develop and perfect manual skills. This department is beneficial to all students regardless of their vocational choice. KiKi and Angie Tantillo pause to pose. Homemaking Through Aquinas’ Homemaking courses, the student is oriented in the domestic activities of the modern home- maker. The daily exer- cises in sewing and other useful handicrafts pre- pares the student in the art of creating a cheer- ful, organized home. 78 The Language Department of Aquinas endeavors to foster a fluid command of Spanish and French, as well as to promote a historical knowledge of the country. Through class discussions and study, the stu- dent identifies with the cultural en- vironment of the spoken language. I Sister Ruth Marie corrects Spanish I exercises. Speaking in English is fun for Dale Dangerfield and John Glinski who put on a puppet show in Speech class. Debbie Carter and Mary Ellen McCarthy converse in French about the store. 79 Brother Raymond’s Contemporary Affairs class discusses Lederer's A Nation of Sheep in Aquinas’ library. Social Studies Learning from the past for the bet- terment of tomorrow is the purpose of social studies. Becoming interested in world affairs, trying to understand the culture of the many types of people who inhabit the world, researching into the customs of the past, and presenting one’s own views on the world, all play a part in the curriculum of social studies. Through comparing the past with the present in daily studies, the students are A field trip to Biltmore Estates highlighted the Juniors' History class. better prepared to face the problems tomorrow will bring. Pep Club In the latter part of 1969, due to a slump in school spirit, the Aquinas Pep Club was organized by several conscientious students. The club has regular meetings and attends all activities, such as clean-up days, dances, and fund raising campaigns for the March of Dimes. Most important, it attends the athletic games and demonstrates true spirit for a great school! Officers: John Mastroianni and Tommy Willis. Since Theresians consider prayer to be the first and most effective means of increasing vocations, each meeting is begun with the Rosary and an hour each week is spent in prayer. The activities of the Theresians have been enlarged within the year. Sponsor- ing the education of a nun, teaching the underprivileged chil- dren in our community, and being aids to nuns in special fields are examples of the apostolic work done. The Theresian motto is, “Without God we cannot; without us, God will not.” Sister Mary James, Franciscan, speaks about changes which came about during her Novitiate days. These advancements have caused this to be a year to remem- ber. The Aquinian staff has combined a photographic myriad of people and activities with some original approaches. We sincerely hope that to each individual, this book represents a part of his life and development at Aquinas. Only by accomplishing this goal, may our traditional excel- lent rating in both the Catholic Press Association and the National Press Association endure. This was accomplished only by the complete dedication of all team members and the loyal support of the student hotly, combined with the confidence and experience of Aquinas capable coaching staff: Head Coach, Tom McDevitt; Back Coach, Jeff Slagle: and Trainer, Howard Willis. The opening game of the 1969 season was a preview of things to come as the Irish blanked Wadley 12-0. However, Shamrock hopes were dimmed as the powerful Thomson Bulldogs defeated us 33-0. But the Fightin Irish came on strong the following week to defeat Waynesboro 12-6. The Barnwell game proved a heart- breaker as the Warhorses edged Aquinas 8 6. Region 4-AAA champions handed the Irish a 27-7 defeat, but spirits soared high as the Irish romped Tint 20-0 and tapped Josey 6-0. Against arch-rival A.R.C.. the Shamrocks persisted in a rugged fight but lost with a 16-7 score in spite of an opening minute TD. The Wildcats of Lucy Lanev clawed Aquinas 20-0. In the last game of the season, Irish supporters thrilled to a display of football prowess. In addition, the fans enjoyed the Homecoming proceed- ings at half-time, delighting in the beauty of the lasssies, especially of Ann Heffernan, the crowned queen. For the past 22 years, the Aquinas Sports Department has been extremely fortunate in having Coach Howard Willis on its staff. A familiar sight around the school, Mr. Willis offers his valuable time and experi- ence to the most important teams of Aquinas: football, basketball, and baseball. During the past football season, Mr. Willis organized the defensive backs and ends into what wras perhaps the strongest part of the team. He, along with Coaches Slagle and McDevitt, managed the team with the best record in ten years. As for the girls’ basketball team, this year they were runners-up in the Region 4-AAA Tournament. This entitled the team to participate in the State Tourney. During his career, his teams have attended the state tournament four times, once as champions and thrice as runners-up with two of these three times occurring in the past three years. Coach Willis manages the infield players which are recognized by opponents as stiff competition. This infield, along with the remainder of the team and its coaches, are expected to attend the state baseball tournament this year. None of these teams could have attained the excellent status in the region had it not been for the determination, courage and confidence Mr. Willis inspired. (You’ll get up to 27 miles to the gallon.) And the amount of oil you use is like a drop in the bucket. (It only takes 2.7 quarts and almost never needs more between changes.) And the engine is air-cooled, so you don't have to spend a red cent for anti-freeze or rust inhibitors. And you get more than your money’s worth out of a set of tires. But don't think buying a new Volkswagen is just another get-rich-quick scheme. You have to wait until the second set of tires wear out. 3720 Augusta Road Aiken, S.
