Saint Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian and philosopher, is represented in liturgical art with a sun emblazoned on his chest or bearing a book, symbol of his scholariiness. While a young man in the seminary, Thomas’ colleagues called him a “dull ox” because of his absent-minded behavior; however, a professor defended him saying that Aquinas would some day pro- duce a series of earth-shattering writings. This he did, and he is often depicted with a chalice and host to symbolize his Eucharistic writings. These symbols: ox, book, sun, chalice and host appear combined on our cover. Repeated throughout this book is the crusaders’ cross, an ensign of conquest in the name of Christianity. Perhaps the knights of Aquinas’ time had the wrong concept of holy conquest, theirs being by the sword. The principle, however, is indeed one to be utilized by students in a crusade for knowledge and conquest of themselves and the world. AQUINI AN artist, '69

AQUINAS 1969 They talked about building this room and that one And they did it; They talked about getting this coach and that one And they did it; They talked about helping this person and that one And they did it; They do a lot of things here and always will— That’s why this place is more than a building. Friends come and friends leave; We have nicknames for them and they for us; When people leave, the walls ask where They’ve gone. These people, our friends, who come and go, Are more than nicknames to us Because they do a lot of things and always will— They’re why this place is more than a building. by An Aquinas Student 4
