Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1969 volume: “
Saint Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian and philosopher, is represented in liturgical art with a sun emblazoned on his chest or bearing a book, symbol of his scholariiness. While a young man in the seminary, Thomas’ colleagues called him a “dull ox” because of his absent-minded behavior; however, a professor defended him saying that Aquinas would some day pro- duce a series of earth-shattering writings. This he did, and he is often depicted with a chalice and host to symbolize his Eucharistic writings. These symbols: ox, book, sun, chalice and host appear combined on our cover. Repeated throughout this book is the crusaders’ cross, an ensign of conquest in the name of Christianity. Perhaps the knights of Aquinas’ time had the wrong concept of holy conquest, theirs being by the sword. The principle, however, is indeed one to be utilized by students in a crusade for knowledge and conquest of themselves and the world. AQUINI AN artist, '69 activities page 12 AQUINAS 1969 They talked about building this room and that one And they did it; They talked about getting this coach and that one And they did it; They talked about helping this person and that one And they did it; They do a lot of things here and always will— That’s why this place is more than a building. The Very Rev. Monsignor El wood C. Voss, co-founder of Theresians, ad- dresses the organization. At his left is Sister Patricia, editor of the Na- tional Theresian magazine, and Sis- ter Ruth Marie, moderator. Theresians Theresians is a nation wide organization founded on October 3, 1961 for the sole purpose of fostering voca- tions to the sisterhood. The members fulfill this task mainly through their weekly holy hours and by creating an atmosphere in their homes and communities in which religious vocations can flourish. Donna Kron, Veronica Maguire, Donna Dimond, Kathy Thompson, and Cecelia Spinks discuss ideas for future meetings. 15 Search Margie Thellan enters the chapel for weekly Search Mass, as Janet Murray and Anne Landrum place hosts in the chalice for the Offertory procession. Mary Jean Salmon, Cecelia Spinks, Helen Graham, Madeline Stuart, Patricia McGreevey, Joyce Rhodes, and Debbie Carter sort clothes for the clothing drive. Anita Cameron, president, makes last minute changes for the meeting with Sister Christine Marie, moderator. Search is derived from the Sodality of Our Lady organization, begun at Aquinas in 1958. Sodality was purely a religious organization involved wit‘ the spiritual improvement of its members. Deciding that we would prefer to spend more time in community service, the name was changed to Search which name members can interpret to suit their own personal needs. Although Search still participates in such religious activities as weekly Mass, rosaries, Bible vigils, films, readings, and discussions, more emphasis is now placed on the Thanks- giving Food Drive, Toys for Tots, Christmas Party for underprivileged chil- dren, and caroling. Henrianne King, Gerry O’Meara, Kitty Murphy, Peggy Hcffcrnan, Cecilia Spinks, and Ann Hcffernan pack food for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Linda O’Meara leads procession for a Bible vigil, with Kitty Murphy and Celeste Atkinson following. 16 Y C S YOUNG . . . because we have hope, ideals and courage. Coffee House At Coffee House, students gather to solve world, na- tional, local and school problems over a cup of coffee. Father Stranc, of the Administrative Department, acts as moderator. Twice each week Coffee House goers gather to discuss topics ranging from Marshall McLuhan to updating the Church. These would-be philosophers may not have workable solutions to all the world’s problems, but they enjoy probing them. Fighting Irish 1968 Trainer Howard Willis with Head Coach and Athletic Director Tom McDevitt. 38 Opponents Dismayed by Size of the Irish In his second year as coach, Mr. McDevitt led the largest Shamrock team ever to a 3-5-2 season, giving all Aquinas fans confidence in a new trend of football at Aquinas. The 1968 season opened victoriously with the Irish impres- sively downing Wadely 21-0, but a week later the Class B state champions from Thomson subdued the Shamrocks 41-0. After being defeated by Waynesboro 20-7, the fighting Irish fought the Warhorses of Barnwell to a scoreless draw. The cross town Butler Bulldogs handed the Irish a 29-0 loss, but the Shamrocks rebounded in the next three weeks, winning over Tutt 14-0, tying the T. W. Josey team 13-13 and topping Glenn Hills 13-0 in the Homecoming bout. After the final gun sounded, Shamrock supporters stared at the empty field blankly, their hearts heavy but prideful, having watched a valiant forth quarter comeback barely falling short of upsetting age-old rival Richmond Academy. Although the Musketeers won 8-13, Aquinas fans left A.R.C. Stadium with heads held high, knowing they wouldn’t soon forget the unbelievable drive and determination displayed by the Sham- rocks. The exciting season ended with Region champ Lucy Laney overpowering the Irish 19-0 in one of the muddiest games to be remembered. Both teams wait expectantly, ready to get the rebound if it is not a basket. Juniors battle seniors in an exciting volleyball game. Participation in Aquinas’ intramural program steadily increases each year. This is due to the fact that the students enjoy competing against each other for fun and action. These games also enable the students to relax by having a break in the everyday routine of school life. After an invigorating game of basketball or volleyball, a student can more easily return to his afternoon classes fresh and alert. Both teams watch as Tony Colley attempts to make a basket. Retreat What’s it all about, world? How do wc fit in . . . how do others fit in to our lives? Our school community tried to help one another answer these questions by a time of retreat at the end of February. The theme of communication was pin-pointed for the Juniors and Seniors by the showing of “The Pawnbroker”. Other movies, discussion groups, and small group liturgies all aimed at creating an atmosphere of sharing and communication in the school. Several priests, some brothers from Paine College, and fac- ulty members combined efforts to direct discussions and cre- ativity sessions. The necessary groundwork and advance plan- ning of the retreat, as well as the decoration of the school, were handled by a faculty committee headed by Brother George. Sister Ruth Marie gives pointers on art technique to retreat helpers.
