The material is unique; it is meant to he lived, not just learned. Through his religion courses the student is guided to see and understand his relationship to God and to evaluate his importance as a creature. The spir- itual life is the channel of challenge and com- munication. 19 ENGLISH Encourages Originality and Explores Literature The English Department offers a chal- lenge to the enthusiastic and creative minds of students. The four year program offers all students the opportunity to produce ef- fective creative, analytical, and critical writing. The foremost aim in the study of litera- ture is to develop within the student a criti- cal outlook, which means a Christian evalu- ation of literature in its relationship to life. Thus the English program awakens in stu- dents an interest in and a curiosity about good reading by bringing them into per- sonal contact with the universal truths of literary works. 20 SOCIAL STUDIES Bring the World to the Student As a social being, man is naturally concerned with others. He must take an active interest in his fellowmen if he is to function as a complete person. Social studies courses bring the world to the student and help him learn about the people, governments, and places around him. He is taught his rights and duties as an American citizen, the workings of government, what has gone on before him, and what must be done to improve life. In this way the student prepares to shape the future. MATHEMATICS Provides Groundwork for Progress Mathematics, the basis of all sciences, holds an important position in the curricu- lum. The Mathematics Department offers courses in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and advanced senior mathematics to all students possessing curiosity, reasoning, and determination. The Mathematics Program challenges students to think logically and to calculate accurately. The modern approach in mathematics stresses not only the “how” but also the “why” of a problem. Thus the knowledge of mathematics can be applied to any field students pursue. 22 SCIENCE Satisfies Natural Curiosity Human curiosity drives men to probe the vast reaches of the universe. Science courses allow the student to explore his surroundings and inquire into the nature of what he sees. A “new approach” now permits the student to experience through experimentation prior to discussion. Now the student is truly a minia- ture scientist who comes from the lab to ex- plain the data he has collected, not, as in the past, as one who goes to the lab to prove facts already learned. The natural sciences provide many and varied experiences: biology, the makeup of living things; chemistry, physical and chemi- cal changes with all the concomitant effects; and physics, the mechanics of heat, sound, light, electricity, and magnetism. Thus science satisfies natural curiosity while it gives the student a better understanding of the world and leads him to the Source of all. 23 LANGUAGE Fosters international Understanding The Department of Foreign Languages provides two years of study in each of Latin, French, and Spanish. The study of these languages builds vocabulary and enriches the students’ knowledge of the history and culture of the countries. In the Modern Languages enjoyment and personal satis- faction are further developed through the oral method. When- ever feasible, the student is trained to understand the spoken language, to speak it himself, to read it, and to write it. In this way the language student is the center of the scene, as- similating the behavior patterns of the culture, and the class- room becomes identified with the cultural environment of the spoken language. All of these factors tend to encourage the student to reach for international understanding of other cultures. 24 BUSINESS Develops Practical Skills Though the aim of most high school subjects is to challenge the student’s mind, business courses also seek to develop and perfect manual skills. The mechanical skills a student acquires from such courses will serve him well in the future. If he enters the business world after high school, his business skills will help him in his job. If be goes to college, he will be well prepared to complete assignments efficiently. Thus business skills prove a great aid to students in every field. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Stresses Sportsmanship Builds Healthy Bodies The Physical Education Department is dedicated to the development of healthy bodies and personal fitness. Partici- pation in various activities such as football, basketball, base- ball, soccer, tennis, and golf, while promoting a sportsman- like competitive spirit, is designed to help increase endurance and agility. The intramural program enables all students to participate in sports that test individual as well as team skills and strength. 25 Happiness that laughs with you over a joke CLASSES Senior Class Officers Mary Lynn Hummel, President Richard Stearns, President Charles Zerzan, Pice-President Maria Picciuolo, Secretary Dot Dunstan, Pice-President 28 CLASS OF 1966 MARGARET CLAIRE ARTHUR Sodality 1,2; Glee Club 1,2; Newspaper Staff 4; Student Librarian 4, Secretary; SAC 2; Staff Aide 2; Cancer Society 1; In- tramurals 1,2,3. SHAMROCKS MEET COMPETITION WITH SPIRIT For the season’s grid opener, Aquinas took an early lead on Ed Bartis’s spectacular 63 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and held on for the rest of the game to post a victory over Langley-Bath-Clearwater. The following week the Shamrocks, playing the game of their lives against Glynn Academy, lost to the defending Slate AAA champions 13-12 in a thrilling and heartstopping game. After a close first half, Thurmond High broke the game wide open and finished with a 27-6 triumph over the Shamrocks. In the Shamrock Bowl, Aquinas and Benedictine fought to a 0-0 tie on a rainsoaked field down in Savannah. With an awesome attack and a determined defense, the Irish of Aquinas downed Groves High 18-0. Richard Steams passed for three touchdowns with Ed Ribock, Ed Bartis, and Dick Gerrish receiving one apiece. The Jenkins Warriors then went on the warpath and scalped the Irish 28-0 with a devastating ground attack. Undefeated Savannah High came to Augusta and showed too much talent for Aquinas, hut the fighting Irish battled out two touchdowns before bowing 34-12 on a cold Homecoming Saturday night. In a renewal of their local rivalry, Butler took advantage of Aquinas’s costly mistakes and trimmed the Irish 13-0. In the final game of the season, Richmond Academy finished their season at the expense of the Irish 41-0. Although the Shamrocks finished with a 2-6 record, Mr. Leonard feels that the season was somewhat of a success. With a great turnout of Freshmen and Sophomores, Aquinas is looking forward to great things in the future. AQUINAS A GO-GO WITH RIBOCK LEGEND Ed, John, Bards Hailed Georgia's Best in History VARSITY Seated: Gary Birak; Tommy Ralhbun; Dan McNamee; Eddie Bartis; John Ribock; Ed Ribock, Co-captain; Chris Caver; Bubber Willis, Co-captain. Standing: Richard Stearns, Manager; Pat McMahon, Manager; Dick Gerrish; John Heffeinan; Dennis McCarthy,’Richard Morman; Jimmy Herman, Manager; Coach Bob Stewart. The legend of the Ribocks came to a halt in the semi- finals of the AAA State Tournament, but the cries of “Big John” will ring loud and long all across the country next season when the 6-6, 218 pound junior will carry the fam- ily banner alone the first time for the ever-improving Aquinas basketball Shamrocks. When the State Tournament opened in Atlanta in early March, John and Ed Ribock were billed as “the highest scoring brother act in tournament history” and they carried the tag well. Eddie Bartis, the third member of the “Big Three,” combined to give Aquinas the best front line in Georgia high school basketball history. John averaged 25.8 points per game to become the highest AAA scorer in his- tory; Ed averaged 16.8 and Bartis scored 15.6 per game, for a combined total of 58.2 points per game. “This was the end of an era,” said Shamrock coach Bob Stewart. “But the beginning of an even brighter one here at Aquinas. “The dark ages are gone forever for Aquinas basket- ball. “We’re here to stay.” The Shamrocks compiled a 28-8 record for the year, in- cluding four wins in four tries over arch-rival Richmond. It was Coach Stewart’s third consecutive winning season, and included in the victory rush was a Chronicle-Herald tournament championship and a seven-game and a nine- game win streak. The two Ribocks and Bartis were named to the C-H all- tournament team, with Eddie Ribock being named Most Valuable Player and John the only unanimous choice on the a 11-tournament team. Aquinas tied for the regular season championship in Region 2-AAA, but fell in the semi-finals of the region tournament and finished third to earn a berth in the State Tournament. Bartis and Ed Ribock claimed places on the All-Region team. It was the second time on the team for Bartis and an unprecedented third straight time for Ribock. John Ribock, with 896 points and 599 rebounds for the year, won a berth on the State Tournament All-Tournament team after setting an all-time rebound mark for the event with 83, and he also snapped the tournament scoring record with 103 points for the four games. The latter record was broken in the final game by two points. Chris Caver, the junior quarterback, turned in a record- shattering performance at the free throw line and did what Coach Stewart termed “an excellent effort in the backcourt for a first year man.” The fifth member of the starting five, Dan McNamee, earned the label of “Mr. Defense” and always drew the unenviable task of guarding the opposition’s top offensive star each game and improved with each game. Tommy Rathbun was the only other player to earn a monogram during the campaign. But seniors Howard Willis and Dicky Gerrish; junior John Heffernan ; sopho- mores Dennis McCarthy and Gary Birak; and freshman Richard Mormon played a prominent role in the Irish’s most successful season. It could be a depressing thought to think of Aquinas basketball in 1966-67 without Ed Ribock, Eddie Bartis, Dan McNamee, Tommy Rathbun, Howard Willis and Dicky Gerrish. However, Coach Stewart proudly points to Coach Pat Johannsen’s undefeated freshman team and the spirited “B” varsity and declares: “Everything’s coming up roses next year. “With a 6-6 block of granite for a foundation,” the coach states, “half of the rebuilding program is com- pleted. “Irish eyes will twinkle in Atlanta again come next spring.” 72 SCOREBOARD AQUINAS 72 . 79 . 50 . 75 . 89 . 94 . 74 . 91 . 67 . 94 . 59 . 68 . 52 . 77 . 69 . 73 . 64 . 92 . 79 . 53 . 68 . 67 . 79 . 72 . INTRAMURALS Encourage Spirit of Teamwork The intramural program, which includes competition in basketball and volleyball, has completed its fourth year at Aquinas under the direction of Mrs. Kearns and Brother Clement Gerard. Freshman and sophomore teams are placed in the Junior Division; Junior and Senior teams in the Senior Division. After the regular schedule of games, playoffs are held to determine the school champions. THE THERESIANS OF AQUINAS Foster Vacations Loyal daughters of the Theresians of America, with whom they are affiliated, the Theresians of Aquinas devote their interest, their zeal, and their prayers to fostering vocations to the Sisterhoods. Their monthly meetings feature instructive and inspirational talks by priests, sisters, and laity on the various religious communities in the Church, the needs of the Church in the modern age, and the role of the individual Christian, religious or lay, in fulfilling these needs. Each Theres- ian makes a private holy hour each week for an increase of Sisterhood vocations through a spirit of generosity on the part of those whom Christ calls to follow Him in this special way. The Theresians sponsor vocation displays, panel discussions, and a Bible Service “To Know One’s Vocation.” The Theresian Organization includes adult, college, and high school units throughout the world. Its patroness is Saint Therese of Lisieux. Its motto: “Without God we cannot; without us Cod will Maureen O'Brien and Dot Dunstan encourage prayers for vocations. She attends this class, for which credit is given, every Monday and Thursday, continuing and enriching the vocal training which, in most cases, she began as a Freshman at Aquinas. The Glee Club performs frequently throughout the school year—in its own pro- grams or as part of other school functions. A full schedule of Christmas caroling at local hospitals and army installations is fol- lowed by intensive practice for the event of the year—the Spring Concert. An Aquinas “first” this year was the organization of an all-male Glee Club whose Charter Members made their debut in the April Concert. Music librarians Frances Spinks, Margaret Culpepper, Barbara DeMarco, and Virgi- nia King, assist Sister Ann Richard. 98 Choir Officers: Laurie Loyal, President; Karen Lewis, Secretary-Treasurer. Membership is obtained on the basis of Fresh- men try-outs, after which the girls receive basic instruction in the vocal art to prepare them for later membership in the Glee Club. Their programs offer a rich variety of sing- ing experiences—traditional and novelty, sacred and secu- lar. The Junior Choral shares caroling engagements with the Glee Club at Christmas time and is heard in the annual Spring Concert at Bell Auditorium Music Hall. Junior Choral is a credit class and meets twice weekly during school hours. Piano and organ accompanists. CHOIR Select voices from both the Freshman- Sophomore Junior Choral and the Junior- Senior Glee Club make up the Aquinas Choir. A small but versatile and talented group of thirty-eight girls, the Choir pro- vides the singing for all school-Church ceremonies and serves us “song leader” for congregational participation in school Mass- es and Bible Vigils. The principal aim of this group is to prepare lay leaders in the field of Church music as the girls return to their respective parishes. Several selections by the Choir are a specialty in the annual Spring Concert. .... Bottom row: K. DeMarco, J. Hong, N. Durant, L. Cordes, C. O’Connor, K. Farr, B. Kearns. Second row: P. Scherer, H.
