Presented By The Senior Class of Augusta, Georgia THE WORLD OF 2 AQUINAS FOREWORD As we entered the doors of Aquinas, we began the first of four years in a new and dif- ferent world—a world of varied responsibilities and activities; a world which has prepared us in every way: spiritually, mentally, and physically for the adult world into which we shall now set forth. Aquinas has been to us the stepping stone up to the big, wide, wonderful world we live in. IT’S A BIG WIDE WONDERFUL WORLD TO LIVE IN CONTENTS 3 Student Life 4 Dedication 7 Administration 8 Faculty 10 Seniors 13 Underclassmen 31 Sports 47 Organizations 63 Features 77 Advertising 88 Students head for dividing line as 8:50 bell rings. DEDICATION DEDICATION We, the seniors of Aquinas High School, with our deep- est respect and love, dedicate the 1963 Aquinian to His Holiness, Pope John XX111. As Vicar of Christ on earth, our Holy Father plays a vital part in our lives. His outstand- ing Christ-like love towards all peoples has won him world- wide respect and admiration. During the fall of this past year, Pope John XX111, con- cerned with the problems of the Church, convened the Second Vatican Council. The immediate aim of the Council is the renewal of the Church; the long-range aim is the reunion of Christendom. As active members in the Mystical Body of Christ, we pray with His Holiness for the success of this Council: O Holy Spirit, renew Thy wonders in this our day, as by a new Pentecost. Grant to Thy Church that, being of one mind and steadfast in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and following the lead of blessed Peter, it may advance the reign of truth and justice, the reign of love and peace. The Shamrocks started the ?62 season with practically all in- experienced players. There were only 4 returning ’61 starters. Injuries were very detrimental to the success of the Irish squad. Quarterback Joe Mulherin and linebacker Tom Bailey were re- moved early in the season, due to knee impairments. Although the Shamrocks had a rough season as far as the won- lost record was concerned, they were given a chance for the Region Championship when they defeated Butler. CHEER LEADERS Elizabeth Whilden PORTRAY Janet Salmon, captain Shannon Hardy SCHOOL SPIRIT NEW COACH, NEW GYM, GIVE TEAM NEW LOOK The Shamrocks basketball season has been a full one under their new coach, Mr. Robert Stewart. Mr. Stewart came to a rather inexperienced team with only two real veterans, Larry Turley and Mike Kirkey. The Shamrocks were not only young in experience but also young in age. The 11 man club had only three seniors, two juniors, five sophomores, and one freshman. The seven stalwarts that held up the varsity squad were: Turley, Kirkey, Ribock, Johannson, Coker, Sheehan, and Mannelly. All these boys showed great ability and application during all games and won or lost in the true spirit of sports- manship. The Irish Varsity was either extremely good or extremely bad. Never was there a Happy Medium. With eight of the 11 varsity boys returning and the addition of three B-Varsity players, the Shamrocks will look for many victories in the coming ’63-’64 season. Since there were only five seniors on the team, experience will be the keynote next year, and everyone is looking forward to a better season. Dec Evans, forward, captain. In 1961 both Singles and Doubles teams went to the State Tournament. The Singles made it to semi-finals. In 1962 the Singles team represented Aquinas at the State Tournament. This spring both Singles and the Doubles team will play in the region 2AAA Tournament. If they place first or second, they will qualify for the State. With this fine standard to follow, the 1963 golfers are spurred on to keep this winning record. Graduation took only one member of the team. The 1963 team is made up of experienced players, all of whom saw action during last spring. RE 3-2536 OWEN'S- Best Wishes Patrick Walsh Council =677 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Augusta, Georgia A TEACHER'S PRAYER AT GRADUATION Create in them, O Lord, a listening ear Tuned to the subtle tones of valiant art That theirs may be an understanding heart Wash from their blear-booked eyes the maze of print And make the words once lifeless on the page Stir their hearts to an indignant rage Purge from their tongue all glib banalities That ever)' utterance of theirs may be Framed in the yea and nay of honesty Let them not be falsely lured by sweet scents But in the sweat of human labor find The odor of earthly dignity divine And may they handle all things reverently So as to feel through texture and design With quickened fingertips the spark divine In whatsoever ways we may have failed Let time from their minds those faults erase That Christ may shine in undiminished grace. —Sister Marcella Marie, C.S.J.
